There’ve been some really interesting sound effect libraries added to A Sound Effect recently. Here’s a look at four of them:

Interesting new sound effects:

Wild whooshes from bobsleds

  • Sports Sound Effects Bobsleighs and Skeleton Play Track 82 sounds included, 24 mins total $29

Bob Skeleton library delivers exciting action sounds of  Two Men Bob and Skeleton heroes that go down the track with more than 100 kilometers/hour.

The sounds of this library were taken from 9 spots along a track in Altenberg in the south of Germany. Each take is sorted and meta-tagged by recording spot and with this content you are able to assemble a complete run from start to finish or even to extend it by easily combining start sceneries, energetic passes in different speeds and noisy brakings down in the valley.

Furthermore Bob Skeleton´s content is an inspiring resource for sound mangling experiments and artificial foley design.

Stephan Marche from Detunized had the clever idea to record the sounds of bobsleds for his latest SFX library. They produce some great, lively sounds as they whirl by at more than 100km/hr – really useful for spicing up your whoosh arsenal, or perhaps for designing interesting new vehicle or spacecraft sounds?

Undercover agent SFX tools

  • SHHhhhhh… They are listening…

282 strange, ghostly and spy-like sounds collected from 2 old analog dictaphones, 1 portable cassette recorder, 1 very small digital dictaphone, 3 portable modern recorders, 1 video cam, and finally 1 very famous portable Reel to Reel recorder (a Nagra IS).

The Undercover Sound FX Library Contains:

    • 136 tracks of, Microphone bumps, lav. Microphone put on clothes, Microphone Feedback, Microphone Noises, and the sounds of the inside of a video cams Mechanics.
    • 41 tracks of, Dictaphone & Cassette Processed (Kyma, GRM Tools, SoundToys) Sounds, weird telephone answering machine noises, Buttons, Play, Rewinds, and Fast Forward sounds.
    • 82 Reel To Reel sounds. Buttons, Tape on, Rewinds/Fast forwards, Manual searching and scratches, where the recorded sounds are heard through the internal speaker of the tape recorder, as well as recorded line out.
    • 23 Various processed (Kyma, GRM Tools, SoundToys) sounds. Different stuff speed up, and mangled.

Many of the recorded sounds have been re-recorded on to tape to get that smooth analog sound. Especially the feedback sounds, and bumps benefit from this technique, but also ambience sounds recorded onto a over used 5″ tape has a certain undercover sound to them!

Another great collection of SFX comes from Mikkel Nielsen over at Sonic Salute. His latest library captures bumps, hums and other quirky sounds from old recorders, video cams, dictaphones and more – perfect for surveillance, stakeouts and secret agent missions.

Bizarre metal sounds

  • An audio library for which metal was kicked, hammered, bowed and… induced to vibrate through feedback loops?! The collection features 346 unique sounds recorded through field trips in US, UK and Italy.

Bonus: Two extra libraries included for free:
This library also includes two additional releases from Mattia Cellotto - for free: Crunch Mode delivers 230 crunchy sounds made with a variety of vegetables, fresh bread, pizza crust and a selection of frozen goods. The Borax Experiment gets you 158 squishy, gory, slimy and gooey sounds.
Mattia Cellotto returns with his third SFX library – capturing some truly bizarre and fascinating metallic rattles, moans and groans. These are equally useful for a lot of purposes – from dark soundscapes and spooky, shocking stingers, to strange groans from otherworldly creatures

The library includes recordings of large prayer bells, Buddhist wind chimes, wooden wishing sticks adorned with twinkling bells, background and foreground crowd walla in Mandarin, Chinese, birds, and other ambient sounds captured on location in stereo. We’ve also included some bonus designed sounds made from the recordings.

  • Car Sound Effects Oval Track Racing Play Track 65 sounds included, 141 mins total $50

Cover your ears. It’s going to get loud, introducing, Oval Track Racing. This high-octane stock car racing library features cars of various makes, models and performance characteristics in nine divisions circling a quarter mile (.40 kilometer) oval ‘short’ track in Idaho. Pass-bys, overalls and on boards were captured from multiple perspectives inside, outside, and alongside the asphalt track with a variety of microphones and recorders.

Oval Track Racing features plenty of pass-bys captured right next to concrete retaining walls on straightaways and through turns. To give you options, these pass bys are broken out two ways. Use the ‘one shot’ sound files consisting of just one quick pass by (thank you Paul V. for this suggestion). Or choose to use the overall race/practice session consisting of multiple laps.

This meticulously crafted library also features a selection of overalls captured from high in the stands, inside the pits, from the center of the infield and outside the gates. For instance, I was able to capture 48 laps (11 minutes worth) of an 85-lap race featuring eight rumbling Big 5 Late Model cars, recorded clean and free of public address announcements, 250 feet (76 meters) outside the ‘bullring.’ The crowd cheers for the winner at the end. Onboard recordings feature the growling sounds of a Street Stock car (1975 Chevrolet Nova), both in the pits and on the track.
