In this mid-week recap on A Sound Effect, we have lots of immersive, ambisonic ambiences that will give your sound image the positional details you’re looking for. You can hear tropical birds, dense forests, crowded theatres, classical WWII planes, and city construction sites that are all ready in B-Format with the option to be converted to surround or stereo. You can also hear thick traffic ambiences from far above the highways and deep in the underpasses, as well as a meditative crafting of a stove fire, atmospheres from the lovely streets of Amsterdam, and metal recordings that will transport you to extravagant places. With so many ambisonic libraries this week – and still more to come – it’s time to give this versatile technology a look!
'Spitfires In Surround' by Immersive FX is an ambisonic library full of these iconically British WWII fighter aircrafts. With over 40 recordings, this collection features sounds from inside the cockpit, as well as external recordings of overhead passbys, landings, swoops, circling, taxiing, climbs, and more from single planes and squadrons. It even has recordings from ‘The Hardest Day’ at London’s Biggin Hill aerodrome and the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight. For sounds of early modern war technology from an unforgettable machine, give this library a listen.
'Harmonics' by SampleTraxx isn't your average metal library by a long shot. This beautifully textured and expressive library is a sound designer and musician's dream - whether they're looking for a emotional swell, a memorable timbre, or something to inspire creativity. Each sound is an evolving, complex metallic vibration designed for elements, hits, and drones, and it includes reversed effects, Tibetian bowls, and 9 Kontakt instruments to give you more organic control. If you need sounds of metal that are flexibly musical, this is the library to check out.
'Exotic Birds' by Spheric Collection has nearly an hour of our feathered friends singing their hearts out for all to enjoy. Recorded in the mountains, forests, and jungles of Brazil, Thailand, and Maldives, these beautiful birds sing alone and with their flocks, surrounding you in peaceful ambisonic and surround landscapes. As usual, Spheric Collection also includes a convenient stereo mixdown, too. For birdcalls that will take you far from bustle of humans, check this library out.
'Forest 2' by Spheric Collection continues the team's collection of lush, natural woodlands and their various foliage, wildlife, and climates. This ambisonic library features sounds of gusting wind and breezes that rustle leaves, break branches, and clatter bamboo. You can also hear trickling streams, buzzing insects, tranquil birdsongs, and surprised deer throughout mountainsides, tropical palms, and coniferous forests. If you like this collection, be sure to check out their 'Forest Atmosphere' library, too!.
'Above & Below Traffic' by Badlands Sound is 70 minutes of traffic from underpasses, overpasses, under bridges, in buildings, and on the hills near the unleaded veins of a city. This library gives you smooth, rumbling atmospheres with blended passbys and speed bumps that will realistically pad your bridge and traffic scenes. Each recording is exactly 5 minutes and thirty seconds, giving you plenty of loop points and variation, too. If you need sounds of heavy traffic from narratively seedy areas, this is one to hear.
Want to make your audience feel like they're actually in Row P, to where they're cautious of bumping the seat in front of them? 'Ambisonic Audiences' by Immersive FX has over 130 sounds of audience reactions that were recorded in concert halls, churches, and theatres. This library features audience members laughing, applauding, murmuring, and cheering with many variations and intensities. It also has studio recordings of controlled laughs, shouts, boos, shushes, and whoops for reactions that are often heard in films and TV shows. If you want to give an uncanny VR experience, check out this library.
Despite the chilly weather of the Netherlands, the Dutch capital is beloved for all its history, points of interest, ideologies, and vices. 'Sounds & Ambiences of Amsterdam' by WW Audio captures this legendary city through its various transportation (including bikes, of course), and its cafes, canals, markets, busy squares, gardens, airport, the infamous red light district, and lots of Dutch conversations. Most of these tracks also last 3 or 4 minutes, giving you over two hours of laid-back city ambiences. Veel plezier!
'The Wood Stove' by UberDuo walks you through the process of creating a full, long-lasting stove fire complete with foley, ambiences, and loops. This library features sounds of opening and closing a wood stove, building the fire, striking matches, controlling the burn size and intensity, and cleaning up the soot. It also includes different perspectives and costs only the price of breakfast. Whether you need the crackling of a warm fire or the hands-on sounds of building one, this library has you covered.
'Building Site' by Spheric Collection was recorded in areas that make us all reach for our ear plugs. In this collection you'll hear sounds of city construction with cranes, elevators, emergency alarms, excavators, jackhammers, grinders, drills, erecting scaffolding, and more. It also has other city sounds like sirens and the long natural reverb as construction noise bounces between massive skyscrapers. If you want your city to feel alive, this library will make your audience feel like they can smell the faint scent of pollution and amazing street food.
