There’s been a tremendous number of great sound effects libraries released by the indie community recently – here’s a look at some of the latest ones: This time around, we have recordings from various suburban playgrounds and dog parks, busy university halls and quiet libraries, open car parks and underground garages, valleys and meadows of Central Europe, city streets at night, and museums and markets around Melbourne. We also have roaring jets, buzzing race cars, and charming 8-bit sound effects. Happy listening!
'Sounds of Nature: WOODLANDS of Europe' by Fennec FX is a beautiful collection of quiet meadows, valleys, and glades in Central Europe. These incredibly calm ambiences capture bird choruses including crows and cuckoos and ambient insects like crickets, all without the disturbances of humans. The library includes 4 hours of these soundscapes from three different mic setups, plus it has the detailed metadata to lead you to the right sound. For peaceful, highly-useful nature ambiences, give this one a listen.
'Parks' by Niels Gabriels has 32 ambiences of various parks. You'll hear relaxing and playful areas like botanical gardens, large and small dog parks, playgrounds, and skateparks, as well as tennis and soccer games. Each track is five minutes long, giving you plenty to work with! Whether you need the relaxing sounds of people enjoying a lazy Sunday or a more active scene with a inner city traffic and recreational sports, give this library a listen.
'Car Parks' by Niels Gabriels gets you two hours of ambiences from various types of car parks. You'll hear exterior parking lots next to shopping malls, echoey interior lots, and underground lots with their creepy ventilation and plumbing. In total, you'll receive 24 recordings that are five minutes each. Whether you have a horror game with an unknown creature behind that next car or an action film with a shootout in a parking garage, this library will have you covered.
'Retro 8 Bit Sounds' by Gamemaster Audio is a collection of 1001 video games sounds from the classic era. These wave-based sounds include the sonic symbols we've come to learn to decipher, like power ups, coin pickups, explosions, deaths, jumps, alarms, footsteps, falling, shooting, teleporting, and lots more. You even get a few musical tracks and stingers! Whether you're creating your own twist on Space Invaders or your character humorously gets transported into an 8-bit world, this library has all the bleeps and bloops you need.
'Interior Ambiences: Tech. Building & Art Workshop' by SonicSalute and field recordist Rune Palving gets you all the creaks, groans, and thick reverberations of university buildings. Recorded at the Technical University of Denmark, this library has 15 surround tracks and 10 stereo tracks of college crowds in hallways, dining areas, libraries, auditoriums, and more. It also includes sounds from an art workshop in Copenhagen where artists write, paint, and clean their shops. For a collection of unique surround room tones, look no further.
'Race Cars' by Airborne Sound has all the vrooms you could hope for. This library, which was recorded at the Ferrari Challenge, NASCAR, IndyCar, and others, has sounds of race cars practicing, qualifying, and, of course, racing. It includes many perspectives, from near the track, close-ups in the pit stop, and far away ambiences, and captures plenty of pass-bys, backfires, revving, and more. If you need sounds from a day at the races, check this one out.
'Attack Aircraft Maneuvers' by Airborne Sound is the pro library of fighter jets you've been looking for. This library has 118 sounds of military aircraft like the F-16C, F/A18C, CF18 Hornet, and CT-114 Tutors. These jets tear through the sky as they pass by, doing their climbs, curls, and dive bombs. You'll even get almost romantic metadata like 'CF-18 Hornet jet fighter passing by, breathy and sailing by in the distance' or 'F-16C Fighting Falcon fighter jet passing by to climb with a fiery crackle in the distance'. For a great collection of jets, check this one out.
'Public Spaces' by Niels Gabriels is a collection of room tones from public areas in Melbourne. These atmospheric places include libraries, markets, concert halls, car parks, food courts, museums and more, with each track lasting five minutes long. Much of the metadata even lets you know from where the mic was recording, like the balcony, fruit and vegetable section, or near the elevators. For a wide variety of interior ambiences, give this one a listen.
'Streets at Night' by Niels Gabriels has lots of quiet night ambiences in a small city. In this library, you'll hear 75 minutes of atmospheres that include busy highways and far away sirens, quiet intersections as cars pass through, rooftop and bridge underpass ambiences, distant trains and bar crowds, and more. Each track is five minutes long, giving you plenty of loops points if need be. If you're looking for that distinct tranquility you feel in the twilight hours of an urban area, check this one out.
