This week on A Sound Effect we have tons of new libraries from great sound designers.

Airborne Sound has crafted electrical zaps, mangled glitches, and subsonic whooshes. Watson Wu shows off sounds from a Ford F-150 and humvee (or HMMWV if you will). Our largest library to date, this collection is a comprehensive focus on the sounds and functions of the archer and the act of archery. Included are eight recorded bows (2 crossbows, olympic recurve, traditional recurve, longbow, long compound, short compound, and Magyar bow) with 2 additional ‘mythic’ bows of our own design, each using 3 types of arrows (aluminum, carbon, and bamboo) on 3 varying surfaces (hard, soft, and dirt) from 4 simultaneous recording positions (at bow, at target, midflight mono, and midflight stereo). Each bow and each arrow type have a character all there own.

The content’s dynamic range is wide, from whispering bamboo arrows gliding on rests as they are drawn to firing position, to the powerful THWACK of crossbow bolts striking their target. All non-firing sounds were recorded in a controlled studio environment while all recordings of the bows being fired were taken on a plot of wide-open rural farmland, encompassed by forests. When needed, this ambient natural environment provided an ideal impulse response to be used in the design and editing of some of the sounds to create a heightened effect.

Releasing / relaxing a draw

Suburbs of Chicago: Woods is the 6th in the Suburbs of Chicago Series. This pack takes us deep into another suburban forest preserve. This one drapes the sky in tall trees, providing shade and plenty of trails to walk through. Watch out for small critters jumping around as one recording in this pack caught a squirrel hopping through tall grass and weeds. There are plenty of grass and leaves rustles along with bird chirps. There is also a recording over 10 minutes at the intersection, filled with passing and idle vehicles, right out side the wooded forest preserve. Recorded at 24 bit, 192 kHz using the Sennheiser MKH8050 and MKH30 into a Sound Devices Mix Pre-6.

Over an hour and a half of recordings, all metadata tagged and updated using the Universal Category System in Soundminer, Basehead, and Soundly. As in the all the other packs in this series, you will hear distant traffic and planes throughout.

Fiat Panda, Type 169

'Fiat Panda, Type 169' by Detunized delivers vehicle sounds of a compact city car that emits some very characteristic sounds, especially from the exhaust.

Fiat Panda 169 sound library delivers vehicle sounds of a usual mass production car. The featured model was manufactured in late 2009 and has run about 40.000 miles at the time of recording. With the small 1.1 litre / 55 HP engine it is a lively compact size city car for daily use. The rear muffler already showed some rusty traces of age so that the entire car emits some very characteristic sounds, especially from the exhaust.

For the library the Panda was recorded to 18 takes with 6 onboard mics. These takes feature the car in various driving situations on asphalt, dirt road and gravel. Each take comes as Reaper set with time-aligned tracks from 2 mics in the engine bay, 2 interior mics, 1 wheelhouse and 1 exhaust microphone.
The exterior sounds – that encompass engine on, off, acceleration, approach, stop etc. – are recorded with Sennheiser MS Setup.

Additional foleys of doors, switches, wipers, windows, seat belts etc. are recorded separately with the car´s engine turned off.

Train Life 3 is the third library in the ever evolving sonic journey of recording trains. I can’t quite explain it, but trains are just downright fun to record and those old industrial rail yards and tracks seem to always be calling.

This collection includes newer more recent recordings and is a good addition for anyone that has the previous Train libraries I’ve released (Train Life and Train Life 2) or who is just looking for a general collection of Exterior Freight and Passenger Trains. You’ll find long approaches, various bys, rail clacks, a few horns. I was also able to get some close recordings of slow connecting cars with big booms and bangs, groans and rail squeals. A couple of those are long recordings which can provide for some really interesting sound design when pitching down. I’ve provided booms and squeals that are more singular elements with multiple versions as well.
