New sound effects libraries in February 2016 Asbjoern Andersen

Lots of excellent SFX libraries have been added since the last roundup – check out some of the highlights below:
Grit

  • An onslaught of movement and force using various granularities of dirt-like substances. It’s all in the name. Dirty, gravelly, and ragged.

In this library you will find a myriad of gritty movement sounds derived from 4 different granularities: Course, Medium, Fine, and Ultrafine. There are sweeps, smears, crushes, scatterings, drops, scrapes, rubs, and more, with multiple variations of each. The assets chain together particularly well so that you can use them to make long continuous runs.

The timbre and dynamics of these sounds lend them to be used for many different designs than just scrapes and scratches, such as movement in snow or sand, powerful bursts, high energy flames, shifting heavy objects, large beast vocalizations (dragons, anyone?), and more. As well, their metadata is organized conveniently to allow you to grab chunks of variations on similar movements and drop them into your favorite audio implementation software for quick assignment to random containers or sequences for an asset or call.

This library will almost always find itself being thrown into a creative media project one way or another. Its full of a particular cornerstone sound that is essential to any sounds designer’s toolbox.  And with such a variety and versatility to explore, we promise it will serve you well.

A really great idea from Eiravaein Works: Gritty movement sounds from 4 different granularities: Course, Medium, Fine, and Ultrafine. There are sweeps, smears, crushes, scatterings, drops, scrapes, rubs, and more, with multiple variations of each.

Hybrid Electric Car

  • The Hybrid Electric Car SFX library features a collection of exterior and interior sounds from a 2007 Toyota Prius. A majority of the recording was conducted at El Mirage Lake, a six mile long dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert, 90 miles north of Los Angeles.

This barren landscape, unique for its miles of completely flat terrain, is a popular filming location for automobile commercials and feature films. The recording sessions took place late in the evening and early in the morning, when the surroundings were completely silent.

An ample collection of exterior pass bys, starts, and stop recordings on pavement, gravel, and dry lake bed are included. Speeds range from 5MPH to 80MPH from only running on the electric motor/battery pack, to pushing the Prius’ gas engine towards its max. Other sounds such as washer/wipers, electric motor and gas engine idling complete the collection.

A classic library from New Sound Lab, this one captures the sound of a Toyota Prius hybrid electric car. It was recorded on a dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert, and delivers a large selection of hybrid car sound effects to work with.

Piping Systems

  • Drones & Mood Sound Effects Piping Systems Play Track 46 sounds included, 110 mins total $49

Get the sounds of gas and water running through massive and tiny pipes, at three processing sites closed to the public.

This library delivers the sounds of a gas control station, a sewage plant and a waterworks. We recorded the hissing of gas, low drones of water rushing through massive pipes, and the sounds of various stages of sewage processing, recorded indoors and outdoors in multiple locations and rooms throughout the three facilities. The library includes close-up sound effects, indoor and outdoor ambiences, and features ambiences and stereo contact mic recordings of active gas and water pipes, capturing the various resonating pipes in isolation.

Total play time of all recordings is just under 2 hours.

David Kamp from ShapingWaves got special access to three processing plants that are normally closed to the public. The result is an interesting library that delivers a unique collection of gas, water and sewerage rushing through pipes + some great ambience recordings.

Popular sound effects this week:

  • Firearms Sound Effects Analogue Ordnance Play Track 6300+ sounds included, 293 mins total $96

Analogue Ordnance is a massive construction kit for science fiction weapon sounds, made entirely with hardware synthesizers, mastered entirely in the analogue domain, and with more variations per sound than any library of its kind. Absolutely no software plug-ins of any kind were used in its creation, except for its collection of ready-to-use designed sounds to show what can be done with the library’s constituent parts.

Masterminded by sound designer Nathan Moody, this library’s unique sonic language delivers about five hours of material, pushed hard through op amps, transistors, tubes, and transformers. Boutique and unique, customized synthesizer modules were used in conjunction with mastering-grade studio hardware to create sounds that range from retro and cute to modern and devastating.

Sounds are organized into mechanical, thump, body, tail, and charge-up groups for truly modular weapon construction. Each group has six to eight “banks” of related sounds, many with intensity (light, heavy) and duration (short, medium, and long) options. Nearly all sounds include 16 variations. In addition to the construction kit elements, some fully-designed weapon sounds are provided (using only the sounds from the construction kit), designed by Nathan Moody, Chase Steele, Axel Steichen, and Sergio Ronchetti.

But the flexibility doesn’t stop there. Reversing the sounds suddenly turns charge-ups into body elements, and vice versa. Each group has some frequency overlap with the others, so they can be mixed interchangeably outside of their labeled or intended uses with filtering and time/pitch manipulation. While the sounds are designed to be layered with themselves, this library plays very well with others, providing thousands of sweeteners to “tech up” any near-future gun or projectile-based firearm, magical attacks, superhuman abilities, or even user interface elements.

Add some hardware to your warfare. From concealable stun pistols to orbital artillery, Analogue Ordnance provides a fresh injection of new source material for your sci-fi weapon designs.
