This week on A Sound Effect, we have new libraries that focus on the elements – both as the essentials you need and the physical makeup of our world. You can hear ocean waves from the shores of Taveuni and Northern California, crunchy, twisted ice blocks and ice cubes, and hot and cold combining for some sizzling goodness. You can also find rifles and pistols itemized for your game audio needs, in-depth coverage of amusement park rides, all the pieces of a carpenter’s workshop, and residential ambiences that show daily life from morning to night. If you are working on an interactive project, this is definitely your week!
Thermal Flux

  • Thermal Flux is a sound effects library formed by extreme temperature reactions. With materials ranging from -119°F to 1900°F all captured at 192kHz/24bit, it’s a fiery (and icy) collection of unique sound design source material.

In each recording, props with vast temperature differentials interact with each other… Red hot ball bearings vaporize liquids, melt ice, and destroy various household products. Extremely cold metal instantly freezes water. Molten metals and glass pour into water, groaning, chirping, and crackling, as they solidify. Dry ice causes coins to viciously chatter. Water beads bounce, whine, and buzz on blazing hot pans. White hot sand roars and erupts upon contact with water. All of this and more was recorded with mics capturing quality frequency information up to ~65kHz. This ultrasonic content allows for extreme pitch shifting without compromising fidelity.

'Thermal Flux' by Collected Transients discovers extreme temperatures for an interesting collection of elemental sounds. Ranging from -119°F to 1900°F, you’ll hear molten metal and glass being poured into water, water beads falling on hot pans, dry ice interacting with coins, white hot sand hitting liquid, and more. Captured with multiple microphones, this library also gives you the perspectives you need from the designers’ curious minds and ears. For a thermodynamic library with plenty of experimental sounds to play with, check this one out.

Residential Ambiences

  • City Life Sound Effects Residential Ambiences Play Track 15+ sounds included, 150 mins total $35

In Residential Ambiences you will get the sounds of 15 different recordings of residential atmospheres with a duration of 10 minutes each so there’s no need to loop.

Recordings have been done during five different periods of a day. Each one includes three versions:

    1. Early Morning
    2. Morning
    3. Afternoon
    4. Evening
    5. Night

Recordings feature sounds such as dozens of birds singing in the early morning, dove calls in the morning as the same time traffic gets noisier, human activities in the background in the afternoon distant traffic and voices in the evening, and sirens wailing in distance at night.

Some of the birds included are: doves, sparrows, crows, a cock, woodpeckers, blackcaps, magpies, and pigeons.

Since some of the files are extremely quiet (mainly in the evening and at night), descriptive markers have been included to highlight interesting events in an otherwise featureless waveform. These markers can be read in programs such as Izotope RX, Reaper, and Soundminer. The markers are also included as .txt files in separate folder.

All files have been recorded in 96 kHz/24 bit with Soundminer and BWAV embedded metadata.

UCS Compatible Metadata embedded. Fields included CatID, Category, Subcategory, FX Name, Filename, Description, BWDescription, Library, RecType, RecMedium, Microphone, Designer, Manufacturer, Keywords.

'Residential Ambiences' by GainWalkers gets you a series of 10-minute residential ambiences that contain all the signifiers of a passing day. You will hear sounds of evening birds, morning choruses, night traffic, dogs barking, retirees mowing their lawns in the afternoon, and more. Plus, the notable features in the tracks have been marked for Izotope RX, Reaper, and Soundminer to help you find what you’re looking for. For a cleverly organized library that will give your background the right amount of towniness, this is one to hear.

Ice Blocks and Ice Cubes

  • Ice Sound Effects Ice Blocks and Ice Cubes Play Track 48 sounds included, 6 mins total $5

Various handpicked and carefully recorded essential and familiar ice sounds. Recorded ice cubes and ice blocks of different sizes to make crackling, breaking, twisting, sizzling, swirling, chipping, smashing, and shaking sounds.

Several types of tools were used to chip and break the ice objects such as kitchen knives, hammers, rubber mallets, and ice picks. A hot iron was used to melt ice blocks, ice cubes were stepped on to make crushing and walking sounds, ice cubes in glass and plastic cups combined with water, plastic ice trays of freshly frozen ice that was twisted, turned, and recorded different ways.

These are just handful of examples of the many familiar sounds of ice that are included in this sound library.

'Ice Blocks and Ice Cubes' by Kevin Durr is a quick pack of ice sounds that cover a wide variety of needs. In its 48 files, you will hear sounds of ice blocks and ice cubes being cracked, twisted, shaken, and chipped with knives, hammers, mallets, and ice picks. 'Binaural Beaches of Northern California' by Kevin Durr has nearly an hour of lush waves as they creep upon the shores of Northern California. Recorded at Black Sand Beach, Stinson Beach, Muir Beach, and Bodega Bay, this library contains ambiences that last from three to seven minutes and capture peaceful, ever-changing whooshes that might just lull you to sleep. It also has different perspectives that capture close-up drips and hisses on the sand, as well as the low, engulfing rumble of waves charging toward the shore. For a solid collection of waves, give this one a listen

Wave Break Vol. 2

  • Environments & Ambiences Wave Break Vol. 2 Play Track 50 sounds included, 286 mins total $50

‘Wave Break Vol.2’ is a compilation of 50 recordings (286 minutes total) capturing the natural sounds of the sea breaking on land. This library follows on from ‘Wave Break Vol.1’ but is uniquely different as it features pristine tropical water recordings from Taveuni, a tropical Island in Fiji.

Please note that my sound libraries do not go on sale (this is so prices are fair all year round), and they are sold exclusively on asoundeffect. :-)

Sometimes sound designers are drawn to capture the same types of sources, and this week is proof. 'Wave Break Vol. 2' is another new wave library and Alexander Gastrell’s next installment in his collection of both soothing and intense waves. Recorded on Taveuni Island, one of the Fiji islands, this collection captures this remote location with nearly five hours of tranquil laps and terrifying crashes. To help you navigate all it has to offer, Alexander also included helpful metadata with words like ‘pebbles’, ‘sand’, ‘rough water’, ‘low rumble’ and more. If you need waves, you have some good options this week!
