‘Tonebenders’ has its 50th episode, and René Coronado and Timothy Muirhead decided to do something special: they reached out to listeners and industry vets to hear about their best days on the job. This hour-long compilation features sound designers, audio directors and freelancers who share stories about modernizing cartoon sounds, creating explosive blockbuster scenes, helping a director get out of analysis paralysis, recording dung beetles in a cow patty, etc. – you know, the kind of out-of-the-box thinking and collaboration that assures us we are truly doing our life’s work.

For the 100th episode of ‘The Producers Podcast’, Ryan Drean celebrates by giving himself quite the task: interviewing 40 radio pros from 14 countries about radio imaging. In this collection, professionals from Brazil, Holland, Kenya and more share where they think the radio industry is heading, and what they do well and how they can improve. They also talk about the audio tools they prefer, words to live by, and what they’d do if money wasn’t an issue. If you don’t know much about radio production, this episode is a great introduction to the culture of audio branding and radio imaging which, like other sound communities, values collaboration, curiosity and small egos.

They discuss the projects that fill them with both pride and dread, and they break down how they individually approach sound design. They also talk about their beginnings, inspirations, growing pains, metaphorical stories, and changes they’ve seen within the industry. If you get a sudden feeling of déjà vu, don’t worry, one of their stories is also featured in the Tonebenders compilation.

‘HowSound’ by Rob Rosenthal is a podcast that focuses on “the backstory to great radio storytelling”. No, it isn’t by definition a sound design podcast, but it covers the making of radio and podcasts, which are dominantly consumed by our ears. In this episode, Rob talks about creating music for stories with Jonathan Menjivar, producer for This American Life. Though not a musician, Jonathan communicates with composers who, much like sound designers, use their black art to support the “posts” and “motion” of a story without being too melodic or melodramatic. If you are someone who loves to learn about structure, whether it be in sound, music, or story, be sure to check out all these insightful and educational 15-30 minute episodes.
