  • Environments & Ambiences Atacama Desert Play Track 40 sounds included, 246 mins total From: $220

Atacama Desert is a collection of stereo and quad soundscapes recorded in the barren but amazingly beautiful desert plateau of Western Chile. This is the most arid desert on Earth, with some weather stations here having never recorded any rain. It’s a breathtaking place with incredible silence and powerful winds. The soundscapes in this collection were recorded around giant rock pillars, endless rock plains and fields of sparse dry vegetation.

This library is the perfect way to portray the barren expanse of the Atacama desert. Some of the soundscapes recorded are the lightest of desert airs. The others feature wind, from light and soft to heavy and gusty. Lastly, some of the recordings also include flies buzzing around.

This library was recorded in several locations on the border between Chile, Argentina and Bolivia . Reaching this part of the world was no easy task, as you can see in the second part of the teaser video.

  • Bird Sound Effects Hoot Play Track 39+ sounds included, 201 mins total From: $65

    • In Hoot, get an eerie collection of North American owl ambiences. Hear lonesome Great Horned Owls calling on dark nights in the desert and cute bouncing ball calls of Western-screech Owl duets. Hear the haunting hoots of the arctic as the rising calls of Boreal Owls float through boreal forests. Hear the resonant calls of Barred Owls in the old growth of the Pacific Northwest and the almost-silent whooshes of Burrowing Owls soaring through the big sky of West Texas.
    • This library offers you an extensive collection of sounds from a majestic night time hunter. This library grew out of hundreds of hours of nature recordings and several case of mistaken identity. Lucky for my mics the owl realized my furry blimp wasn’t a tasty rabbit at the last second! I hope you enjoy these sounds. Thanks for listening.

  • • Harmonic Series Drones is an extension of several of my music compositions. Over the past few years, I’ve been very interested in data sonification, writing several pieces that turn real-time weather data into music. This library was created using a drone generator that turns weather data into sound. I built this drone generator for my piece Sitka for piano and seasonal electronics.

    • Instead of pulling weather data from Sitka, Alaska, as I did in the piece, I used 2016 daily temperature data from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a fragile place wrapped up in current political drama and now open to drilling. This library is a sonification of 2016 temperature data in ANWR. The highest global temperature on record was recorded in 2016 (2016 Global Climate Report). It is even worse in the Arctic where temperatures are warming at twice the rate of lower latitudes (2016 Arctic Report Card). With this library, you’ll be able to hear the warming, and I hope this library helps to draw attention to the rapidly changing environment of the Arctic.

    • Each of the forty-eight drones corresponds to the average temperature of a day in 2016, with twelve drones from each of the four seasons. The drones are built from pure tones made from tightly filtered pink noise. These pure tones are then stacked in harmonic series relationships. For instance, a winter drone might consist of the fundamental and four lowest partials. A summer drone could have the fundamental and partials seven, fourteen, and thirty-two.

    • The drones stand on their own without the story. If you never knew they started with weather data, you would still find a variety of pure, rich, microtonal drones with enough variety to fit the mood of any project.

    2% FOR THE ENVIRONMENT:
    • Two percent of the price of this library is donated to an environmental cause. I view it as an “artist royalty” for the planet!

    KEY FEATURES:
    • All files are sample seamless loops. So, there are no fade-ins and outs and the files are ready for looping in any DAW.
    • Consonant and dissonant drones
    • Simple and complex drones
    • Each of the 48 drones is between 1 and 1.5 minutes in duration
    • Non-periodic undulating drones
    • Each harmonic has a randomized gain, so the drones pulse non-periodically.
    • Drones were made from tightly filter pink noise, so drones have a small amount of soothing and airy pink noise.
    • Microtonal harmonic series relationships create beautiful beating between drone harmonics.
    • All drones have a fundamental of G1 (49Hz). Transpose them as needed to fit any project.
    • Partials are included in the metadata, for example, “fundamental_G1_harmonics_1_2_3_4_7_16”.
    DATA SONIFICATION:
    • Weather data included in the Soundminer Description and BWAV description fields.
    • Temperature data was translated as a combination of lowest harmonic, number of harmonics, and highest harmonic.
    • Generally, lower temperatures include bass harmonics and higher temperatures include treble harmonics. For example, the hottest day of the year only included harmonics 18 and 24.
    • Location: weather data is from the NOAA station at Helmut Mountain, Alaska in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

RECORDING TIPS – HOW TO RECORD RAIN:
    • Use microphones known to perform well in high humidity. I use Sennheiser microphones. View my full gear list – here.
    • Use cables made with Neutrik X-HD Series waterproof connectors. This keeps water from getting into your cable connection points.
    • Use a dry bag for your recorder. I like the Sea to Summit 65L bags because they have a wide mouth and can easily fit a recording bag through the opening.
    • Put your dry bag at least 25 feet away and cover it with local foliage. Otherwise you’ll just record the sound of rain hitting a dry bag.
    • Use a Cinela Pianissimo Double Mid/Side blimp with a Kelly Rain Cover.
    • Coat the inner cover of the Cinela Pianissimo with NixWax as Cinela directs on their website. This is a water repellant molecule that is also acoustically transparent. The water repellant causes the water to bead up and roll off while also letting the air through. Read more about how NixWax works – here.
    • The honeycomb of the Kelly Rain cover disperses drops as they hit the blimp which minimizes thumps. However, don’t use the Kelly Rain cover in areas with lots of insects because they tend to get stuck in the honeycomb, buzz for hours, and ruin recordings. The honeycomb cover also doubles as excellent protection for the blimp if a bear/moose/elk decides to chew on it.
    • Find a section of forest with low and dense deciduous leaves. These leaves catch the rain so drips don’t thump on the blimp. Occasional thumps during heavy rain are okay because they are easy to edit out in post.
    • Waterproofing a microphone blimp is totally game changing. I can now leave my rig out in the elements for 24 hours without fear of rain. Waterproof blimps and 32-bit float recorders have opened up a whole new world of recording for me  and I couldn’t be more excited.
    • Build a platform of local foliage to cover the blimp for extra protection. George Vlad has an excellent video on how to build a natural rain canopy – here.
    • I learned many of these rain recording techniques from George Vlad, so make sure you check out his work at Mindful Audio.

  • DESIGNING THE SILENCE
QUIETUDES is part of the most important tools in our daily sound design work: QUIETUDES are ambiences that occur at or near the threshold of human hearing and provide one of the most valuable resources in the studio.

    WHAT’S INSIDE

    INCLUDED SOUNDS – KEYWORDS

QUIETUDES, NATURE, AMBIENCES, CRICKETS, PRAIRIES, TROPICAL FORESTS, WETLANDS, CONIFEROUS, WILDERNESS, WILDLIFE, DESERTS, OCEAN SHORES, HAWAII, BEACH, CANYONS, INSECTS, FROGS, BREEZES, WINDS, SILENCE, WOLF, HOWL, LIGHTENING

    A VALUED POSTPRODUCTION UTILITY

These faintest of all ambiences are remarkably useful in audio production – from replacing digital silence, restoring frequency lost in processed files, to naturalizing cultural ambiences and increasing the dynamic range of your production, applying QUIETUDES will soon become a key, everyday part of your routine. The noblest application of QUIETUDES will be the raising of your audience’s awareness of the eloquence of silence.
