Nature sound effects and recordings, from forests, jungles, plains and fields
The Birds includes selections from some of my previous libraries: Forests and Mountains, California Grassland Wildlife, Forest Day, and Harbor and Ocean.
I’ve gone through all of these libraries and selected what I consider some of my favorite recordings and that only include birds. With this collection you get a wide variety of various birds in different environments, perspectives, times of the day, night. Birds together, more specific and separate, close, distant. The locations mostly include Southern California Foothills, Forests, and Mountains and Central California Grassland areas. There’s also some recordings from Washington and Oregon.
There’s a few different species of Owls, a number of Ravens, various Sparrows, Woodpeckers, Doves, Finches and all sorts of other fun birds singing away. Anyone looking for a bit more info should check out the library links up top to get a good idea.
I’ve provided the species listings by each library. The file names have been kept the same as they were in the original libraries so if anyone would like to compare metadata sheets to see what’s included it will be a bit easier.

There’s also the sound of waves lapping at the dock and boat creaks.
The town features a main road with cafes, noisy cicadas, and trucks. Buses arrive and depart, and there are other large vehicles. You might hear random Greek men shouting in the street.
From a hotel balcony in Panormos, you can hear background air conditioning, sporadic cicadas, distant chatter, and very distant birds. At other times, constant but quiet cicadas, close voices, and people playing in the pool are audible. In the early morning, quiet cicadas, noisy swifts, and distant cockerels can be heard. Thunder & Rain in the city: extracts from three thunderstorms in London, UK.
The Sounds of Malaysia Vol.1 is a mini collection of recordings taken during my travels in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, 2024.
This collection has over four hours of streams, rivers, and waterfalls, all recorded without birds or man-made noise. The 91 recordings offer a variety of perspectives, from close-up to distant, highlighting the natural gurgles and splashes. Everything was recorded in northern Norway, Belgium, and northern France.
I created this collection primarily for myself, aware of the many Rivers and Streams libraries out there, but I couldn’t resist sharing it after enjoying the recording process so much. The sounds capture everything from the intense rush of water just above the roaring rapids to the gentle flow of rivers hundreds of meters away. In quiet natural environments, the sound of flowing water can be heard from very far and this really impacts the soundscape in a beautiful way. I also designed some waterfall samples, focusing on texture to avoid the typical pink noise. These additions sound powerful yet natural. There are also low-end recordings of a large waterfall, captured between rock formations, which deliver a deep roar with minimal high frequencies—perfect for enhancing water sounds.
Many of the recordings were captured during a 30-day hiking trip through the northernmost parts of Norway. Crossing rivers without bridges was a significant part of the journey, and these sounds instantly take me back there, wet feet and all. I hope you’ll find them useful!
Sweeping my flashlight across the still water I see the red glow of multiple black caiman eyes, a haunting stillness. Suddenly a reverberating splash breaks the rhythmic chorus of frogs and crickets as a caiman finds its evening meal, the first of many tonight. Giving a greater sense of space to this Amazonian lake the eyes of the caiman go on glowing, waiting for an unsuspecting fish to pass their open mouths.
It is impossible to not be present in the rainforest. Surrounded by mysterious night vocalization, stinging, biting insects, and penetrating humidity. Gratitude fills me for the Cofan guides who have taken our small group of sound recordists deep into their wildest territory. Nearly a constant buzz fills the soundscape which takes a few days to adjust to, but as I do I start to notice the thrilling variety of calls. Near and distant, there is a spectacular spaciousness and an intimacy that can only come from this unique location.

With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.

A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!

We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!

A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!

I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!

A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
