Product Description
At this scale, wind changes the character of everything around it. Indoors, it turns familiar rooms into deep, tense, rattling spaces. Outside, strong gusts require deliberate movement, even for a short walk.
Recorded in winds ranging from 50 to 150 kilometres per hour, this collection captures the physical, unpredictable character of the sub-Antarctic. Across exposed Southern Ocean landscapes and inside old huts, sheds, and station structures, gusts rattle doors, flex metal, and find strange resonances. Outside, they sweep through tussock grass, sand, rain, surf, and open ground.
Used on their own, these recordings bring authentic extreme weather to a scene. Layer them to create tension, scale, and unfamiliar atmosphere: the pressure of a storm outside a remote station, a vast and hostile landscape, or an otherworldly environment with real physical weight.
Across twelve months at a remote sub-Antarctic research station, I recorded through the strongest Southern Ocean weather of the year. Stepping outside in the worst conditions meant fighting to keep my balance and protecting both myself and the recording gear. Around the station, the wind became hollow, rattling, and resonant. Further out, it opened into deep gusts, wisps, and shifting air moving through the landscape. The microphones often heard more clearly than I could beneath my windproof layers.
