Amazon Basin Ecuador

$150

Sweeping my flashlight across the still water I see the red glow of multiple black caiman eyes, a haunting stillness. Suddenly a reverberating splash breaks the rhythmic chorus of frogs and crickets as a caiman finds its evening meal, the first of many tonight. Giving a greater sense of space to this Amazonian lake the eyes of the caiman go on glowing, waiting for an unsuspecting fish to pass their open mouths.

It is impossible to not be present in the rainforest. Surrounded by mysterious night vocalization, stinging, biting insects, and penetrating humidity. Gratitude fills me for the Cofan guides who have taken our small group of sound recordists deep into their wildest territory. Nearly a constant buzz fills the soundscape which takes a few days to adjust to, but as I do I start to notice the thrilling variety of calls. Near and distant, there is a spectacular spaciousness and an intimacy that can only come from this unique location.

I’m an audio engineer and nature field recordist from Washington State. I’ve worked with acclaimed field recordist Gordon Hempton, Apple TV+, Audible Sleep Sound, and numerous independent collaborations. I am the Director of Quiet Trails for Quiet Parks International (QPI). I have experience recording internationally from -30 degrees in central Canada to the Amazon Rainforest. Specializing in soundscapes, ambience, binaural, rare and unusual sound, leads me to become a better listener and observer of the world. See more of my work here: www.nickcmcmahan.com
