Atmospheric drones and ambiences – light and dark, beautiful and eerie, lively and serene
Crafted by iconic sound designer and composer Alan Howarth (Army of Darkness, Total Recall, Bram Stoker’s Dracula), the Cinematic Dread library includes eerie drones, textured atmospheres, and more ready-to-use sound effects to instantly add anxiety and otherworldly energy to your fantasy, horror and sci-fi projects.
Right in time for Halloween, Cinematic Dread delivers 74 foreboding sci-fi and horror sound effects to induce fear and tension in your scenes – including buzzy alien swells, evil choral winds, swirling vortexes, ghostly underwater hums, demonic resonance and more.
Add mood and texture to your designs with the authentic character of sounds direct from the imagination of a horror/sci-fi master. With Howarth’s influential specialization in both sound design and composition – evident in dozens of noteworthy credits including the original Star Trek films, collaborations with John Carpenter (Halloween II, They Live, Escape from New York) and more – this collection provides the perfect mysterious and sinister soundscapes for all of your supernatural sonic needs.
Each sound file is embedded with rich metadata to help you find the exact sound effect you need with quick, intuitive search. This Collection of Room Tones contains Recordings made in empty, abandoned old Buildings and Medieval Ruins. Unsettling Draft Sounds from different perspectives. Wind Gusts heard from inside, Wind Storm echoing in old Chapels or Church, eerie humming inside abandoned spaces, Tonal Draft creating creepy atmospheres… Over 2,5 hours of Urbex type ambiences, containing long files and loops for easy use and variety. Recorded in stereo inside and outside interesting, and secret places, which is a rule for urban exploring ;-)
These are not common Room Tones with only presence of a silent room, but more ambiences that are suited for games/movie where characters are supposed to be in shelter, in abandoned places, in castles, dungeons, prisons, machine rooms etc. Cracks, moving structures, rattling objects are left in purposely to really have a detailed and convincing setting for game, documentary or any visual content. Best is to keep the volume low enough to not overdo the atmosphere.
Care is taken to not have any disturbing human traffic in the recordings, so these will fit for most time periods and geographic locations.
Wind and Metal explores the awesome ways metal responds sonically under the influence of wind. Large objects like wind turbines, windmills, a geodesic dome, an overhead power line transmission tower, a fire tower, flag poles and a giant crucifix, were recorded under varying wind speeds from airy breezes to howling gusts. Each structure produces resonant tones unique to its design, location and weather affecting it. There’s the sound of wire fences too.
Here you’ll find haunting, eerie low-end drones plus piercing and painful high-end squeaks. There’s animalistic groaning and scraping. Some serious banging and thumping. Plus rattles and rumbles, deep impacts and rhythmic whooshes.
Create something soothing, eerie, impactful or in between by inserting Wind and Metal into your next project.

Essential Dynamic Drones is intended to be used in a more emotive sense. Some of the tracks are very ‘score’ like and may be able to stand on their own, while other darker, tonal tracks are great accompanied with a full SFX soundtrack behind it (them).
This isn’t a typical Drone library. These sounds, for the most part morph and change over time. Some rise, some fall, while others are constant and dark. Creating tension and uncertainty was the direction I was headed.
There are some ‘light-hearted‘ tracks that are intended to shape a more positive feeling, while the majority of the tracks are in a sense, denser, darker and more emotive, intending on creating uneasiness, uncertainty, and most definitely tension within a scene.

With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.

A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!

We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!

A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!

I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!

A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
