    DESCRIPTION:
    • In African Grey Parrot, get a musical collection of parrot vocalizations from Myrtle the parrot. Hear short squeaks so adorable I couldn’t help but smile and powerful clicks that sound like alien languages. Hear visceral screeches that could cause nightmares and playful whistles so musical you’d think she had a tune stuck in her head.
    • This library offers you a collection of sounds from a fascinating species. I didn’t know one parrot could make such a wide variety of vocalizations and it was a joy to hear them for the first time as I got to know Myrtle over several sessions. I hope you enjoy them too. Thanks for listening.

    KEY FEATURES:
    • Visceral screeches
    • Alarm calls
    • Playful squawks and sqeaks
    • Musical whistles
    • Whooshing wing flaps
    RECORDING STORIES:
    • A friend of mine in Philly recently got an African Grey Parrot. These parrots can live 40-60 years as pets, so this is a serious long-term commitment. People have to put these parrots in their will because your parrot often outlives you!
    • Myrtle the parrot is an adolescent and is discovering her voice. I was lucky to be able to spend 4 separate session with her as she explored the full range of her vocal chords.
    • I was only the second human Myrtle had spent time with, so she was very nervous during the first session. I mostly captured alarm calls and nervous screeches.
    • However, as I returned for more sessions, she became more comfortable and made a wide variety of happy and playful calls. My favorites was the clicks she makes that sound like an alien language.
Lessons Learned – I recorded Myrtle in Double Mid/Side, left the mics on a stand near her, and then backed away. Because I recording in surround, when she moved off axis, I could rotated the surround image in Harpex to center the final stereo rendering included in this library. By leaving the mic in one place Myrtle got comfortable and I was able to capture joyful and playful sounds from this captivating species of parrot.

    • In Maine: Rain, get an expansive collection of forest rain from the pristine wilderness of northern Maine. Hear soothing rain deep in the temperate forest. Hear massive post-rain drips plopping and tiny delicate droplets gently landing on autumn leaves. Hear soothing wind in white pines and the magical sound of a million raindrops on birch and poplar leaves.
    • This library offers you a large collection of temperate forest rain. I hope you enjoy listening to the natural music of the weather as it sings through the woods of northern Maine.

    KEY FEATURES:
    • Zero wildlife of any kind in these recordings. You’ll only hear rain.
    • Light, moderate, and heavy rain
    • Deciduous and coniferous forests
    • Rain on fallen autumn leaves
    • Delicate morning showers
    • Massive splatting drops
    • Daytime and nighttime storms
    • Zero thunder
RECORDING STORIES – HOW TO RECORD RAIN:
    • All recordings made deep in the forest using local foliage rain canopies and waterproofed Cinela blimps.
    • “Tree-ears” are a pseudo binaural microphone setup created by taping two omni microphones (in this case LOM Usi) on opposite sides of a tree about the width of a human head. The technique makes for a wonderfully immersive stereo image similar to binaural. But sometimes rodents don’t like you taping mics to their tree! I lost some Usi cables to an angry chipmunk. Luckily he chewed threw the cables after it stopped raining :)
    • “Tree-ears” need rain protection so that the drips did not thump on the Cinela LEO 20N blimp. My solution was to taped local foliage to the tree trunk about 12 inches above the mics. The leaves catch the raindrops so they don’t thunk on the blimp. This worked wonderfully! If you try this, be careful not to tape the local foliage closer than about 12 inches. If the leaves are too close the splats on the rain canopy leaves don’t blend well with the surround atmosphere. See included product pictures for examples.

    DESCRIPTION:
    • In Angry Chipmunk, get a maniacal collection of enraged rodents. Hear fierce repetitive chirps and visceral trills so close they can’t help but startle. Hear frantic scuttling movement and barks that sound like villainous laughter when pitched down.
    • This library offers you a collection of sounds from a rodent with loads of character. Northern Maine has the highest density of angry chipmunks of any place I have recorded. Chipmunks are incredibly territorial and they really did not like me recording near their trees. They even chewed through some of my cables to show their displeasure! But it was worth it to hear their scrappy vocalizations up close. I hope you enjoy them too. Thanks for listening.

    KEY FEATURES:
    • Angry territorial calls
    • Close and distant perspectives
    • Trills
    • Barks
    • Screams
    • Chirps
    • Frenetic scuttling movement
    RECORDING STORIES AND TIPS:
    • Chipmunks and other rodents are much more active in coniferous groves. They love the nuts dropped by the white pine trees in Maine.
    • That said, be careful when leaving drop rigs in coniferous groves. Plan to lose some cables to chipmunks and mice that don’t like you mounting microphones in their neck of the woods. I’ve had them gnaw on cables, dry bags, and even my microphone blimp! Luckily the rain stopped before they did their gnawing, so it didn’t ruin the recordings!
    • When doing long cable runs in coniferous groves, try using garden stakes to elevate the cable so that it isn’t running along the ground. Getting the cable off the ground 30 centimeters or so tends to discourage gnawing. This can also be useful so you don’t get sticky sap all over your cables.
    • Chipmunks love to startle you. Many a time, I was listening to a peaceful forest soundscape when one decided to slowly creep out on a branch right near my mics and then suddenly blast my ears with a barks, trills, and screams. Scares me half to death every time. The joys of field recording :)

    RECORDING STORIES:
    • This was my first time recording sound design material using hydrophones. Here are a few of the things I learned.
    • Stereo hydrophones are essential. I hate the sounds of mono underwater.
    • I generally don’t like the sound of hydrophones alone as well. So, I experimented with recording in Mid/Side above water and stereo H2a hydrophones below. Turns out, I love the combined sound of the acoustic mics with the hydrophones.
    • My Cinela blimp (which I’ve waterproofed for rain recording) worked perfectly. Because of the NixWax waterproofing, I could place the Mid/Side mics extremely close to the water. This yielded crisp detail, and the mics were completely protected from constant splashing.
    • With the perfect mic setup found, I proceeded to plunge tuning forks into water thousands of times in search of the perfect laser-like sounds!
