  • If your Soundscape needs some gentle, flowing Water, look no further.

When my wife and I were taking a little vacation in the woods of Hardwick, Vermont, I was awestruck by just the utter absence of any anthropogenic noise around us. Whenever there was a car coming through, you’d hear it from miles away, and, with it being late November, there were no bird calls for the majority of the time.

In a small patch of forest near Nichols Pond lies a network of creeks and water runoffs that are ideal for capturing undisturbed, serene sounds of water flowing. Stable temperatures meant that there was very consistent snow melt and the flow of the water stayed steady throughout many hours of recording.

As a result, this single-purpose library contains long-form recordings of these creeks that will excel wherever the sounds of water flowing are desired with not even the slightest hint of looping. With the exception of two babbling brooks captured in stereo during a hike, all recordings are 10 minutes long and captured in AmbiX (Ambisonic B-Format) for the greatest possible flexibility when it comes to placing them in a virtual environment.

These recordings are free of edits and include stereo versions for dragging and dropping without the need for Ambisonic decoding. As a special treat, three long-form recordings are also accompanied by a Geofón track that captures the vibrations caused by the water in the nearby soil.

  • This library contains sound from 23 multi-miced kinetic machines and wounderous apparatus split into mixdowns and construction kits of each machinery.

The mechanisms have been designed and build by and recorded in collaboration with the kinetic artist Willi Reiche in a quiet setting at the Kunstmaschienenenhalle.

Spinning gears, squeaky leather belts, grinding metal, humming motors, tonal elements and rattling parts construct an imaginative factory ambience. It can be perfectly used to design a magical lab, an inventor workshop or a steam punk industrial complex. Of course any tiny to big gear and machines can be brought to live with these sounds. You can easily layer different parts from various machines to create the desired mood and characteristic of your visuals or story.

There are both electric machines driven by servo motors and machines that have to be handled by hand. Additional emf content has been captured from the electronic devices.

Gear used: Up to 10 microphones have been used on each machine, including Schoeps MK41 / CMC1, Dpa 4060, Neumann KMR81i, Earthworks QTC50, AKD D112, Lewitt 540s, Ambient ASF1 and EMF microphones.

  • Scraped Cymbal is a collection of 78 sounds, pristinely recorded, edited and mastered as 96k/24bit stereo wave files.  This companion to the Bowed Cymbal series gives you more options for your stinger attacks.  David took the old, slightly cracked crash cymbal, and literally cut into it with tin snips (picture below).  He then took pliers, bent up some of the cut parts, and began experimenting with scraping various parts of the cymbal and adjusting the microphone position.  The tonalities produced are almost nauseating!  Deep rumbling lows, shimmery atonal highs, gut-wrenching mids – it’s a sound designer’s dream!
