The GENERAL AMBIENCE SERIES: A modular approach to the ambitious project become one of the largest and most versatile ambience sound effects libraries on the marked. High quality, detail, versatility and diversity will set this library apart from other products. You can expect monthly releases of small ambience packs in the future to keep the quality standards high and constantly grow the library over time.
This Urban City Ambience Sound Effects Library is part of the General Ambience Series by Systematic Sound. Urban City 02 extends the series with the first ambience library in 5.0 Surround. This time, I’ve used a Sennheiser MKH 8040-30 DMS system which has differences in tone and features a much more precise and stable image compared to the ORTF array used in Urban City vol. 01.
In this release you will find 82 brand-new high quality recordings that will complement the ones you own from vol. 01 to give you even more flexibility in post.
What constitutes the sound of a modern urban city? Obviously all kinds of traffic related ambiances are included as well as more quiet ones that feature all the nuances of urban air-tones, tonal hums and deep city rumbles. I’ve recorded in residential areas and city parks to capture peoples typical urban city life activities and well as the fast and busy life downtown in the center. The recordings have been made at different times of day and in different weather conditions (rain, wind, etc.). To capture the acoustic properties of the urban environments, I placed the rig in the middle of huge empty squares, in narrow streets, recorded the typical slap back echoes you typically get between high buildings. To even get more variety, I placed the rig in small and larges alleys (with trees and without) as well as in tiny corners, under canopies and even in underground passages.
Onboard sounds are from four separate microphones.
Ch1 Engine Left, Ch2 Engine Right, Ch3 Exhaust Left & Ch4 Exhaust Right
The French Provence Nature sound library offers authentic recordings from the South of France, around Baux de Provence, Uzès, Nîmes and other areas. Of course you will find multiple Cicadas, what the french call “les Cigales”, with their typical sound and local accent!
Also Bird Chorus, Frogs, Summer Bird Songs, Autumn ambiance, abandoned rural village sounds, the famous Mistral wind, Insects flying by and buzzing, Garrigue atmosphere and so on.
Recorded over 2 years and reduced to over 5 hours of selected files, the most suited spots have been used to make clean recordings without annoying traffic. The French Provence Nature library can be used for all time settings and for all media. You can use stereo and binaural recordings.
All files have Meta tags, UCS compliant descriptions that help you find the right sounds.
Finnhamn – Sounds From The Kvarken Archipelago is a collection of natural soundscapes recorded in the Finnish nature during one year.
Finnhamn is a small peninsula in the Kvarken World Heritage Site. Here you can find both wild coastal and calm archipelago landscapes, an old growth forest, wetland, lakes and open plains.
This covers in other words a lot of the landscapes you will find in Scandinavia.
The recordings where made during a one year period, so soundscapes from all four seasons are well covered.
The trail to the old fishing cottage on the hill of the headland goes trough a 300 year old protected forest that is home to a multitude of animals, birds, insects, trees and plants, some of which we get to know more intimately in these recordings. Finnhamn is located in the unique Kvarken Archipelago, which is Finland’s only Natural World Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with Sweden’s High Coast, the Kvarken Archipelago is the best place in the world to experience and understand the land uplift phenomenon caused by the last Ice Age.
The isolated location of Finnhamn and the adjacent forest is rather unique in that sense, that not much sound pollution reaches it. It is well worth a visit if you want to experience deep natural quiet and wonderful and invigorating nature.
The package contains 165 files with a total playing time of 14 hours!
Recorded in 48kHz & 24 bit with a Sound Devices 633 recorder, DPA 4061 microphones and JRF D-series hydrophones. Presented in 48kHz, 24 bit & 44.1kHz, 16 bit stereo.
The compressed package is 9.8/4.5GB.
The tracks are labeled according to the UCS standard, except for the first 4 characters that indicates the order in which the tracks where recorded. If you want to use a database that speaks the UCS language, then please remove the first 4 characters of the filename. You can then arrange the tracks in the right order using the last UserData field (the date).

FOREST LIFE is a diverse collection of 104 isolated Forest Ambiences and Wildlife Sounds. It includes all of the sounds from the FOREST DAY and the FOREST NIGHT Sound Libraries, along with the Rivers and Lakes featured in the OCEANS RIVERS LAKES library. In addition, I’ve included the free mini library FOOTHILLS.
FOREST LIFE came out of a love for hiking and exploring Mountains and Forests and capturing the wonderful soundscapes of that world. Most of these recordings took place in California, in particular, a number of areas throughout the Angeles Forest. You’ll also come across sounds from high atop the Eastern Sierras, San Jacinto Wilderness, Los Padres Forest, and the Olympic Peninsula in Washington.
A variety of different bird species are included, at lower elevation settings, higher Mountains, throughout the day and night, some in isolation, others sometimes alongside wind and when at night, insects.
Also included are isolated Mountain winds in different variations and with vegetation and tree creaks. There’s Cicadas along with different sounding Crickets throughout various times of the night and day.
In the water collection there’s everything from slow trickle creeks coming out of Abandoned Mines to the fast flow of the Hoh River to gentle lake laps high atop the glaciers of the Inyo Forest.
The FOOTHILLS bonus library includes 9 files of Winds and Birds, and a few of the wonderful sounds of an Abandoned Ranch.
Detailed metadata and markers have been provided so they’re easily searchable. Photos are embedded in every file to give an idea of what the location was like. Checking out the Metadata Sheet will give one a better idea of everything else that’s in the library.

Rome is 102 minutes/3.3 Gb of ambiance recordings from the Italian capital. 48 separate files – recorded in 24bit/96kHz A-B stereo. All sounds are UCS-compatible.
Rome was recorded during Easter 2018, and features ambiance recordings of people & places in central Rome. Included are recordings from St Peters Basilica; the Pantheon; various piazza’s (plaza’s), streets and cafés. Many of the locations are famous tourist haunts, and it is certainly audible in some of the recordings, but there are also recordings containing mostly Italian language chatter.
The traffic recordings are typical; with the specific mix of mopeds, scooters, cars & trucks generally seen in the streets of Rome, and the street surfaces are mostly cobblestone. I stayed in Via Milano in the part of Rome called Monti, and recorded that street quite a bit. You will find a couple of long, generic sounding takes, along with a number of smaller snippets containing elements from those same takes, but with more interesting content. That way, you can build the street ambiance you like.
There is also a set of recordings of the old elevator in the building I was staying in; clunky buttons, steel doors and an old-fashioned elevator bell.
Wind Craft is 96 minutes / 1.8 GB of designed wind sound effects.
93 separate files – recorded in 24bit/96kHz. All sounds are UCS-compatible.
Wind Craft features artificially designed wind sound effects done the old way: crafted using mechanical contraptions, physical props and noise from analog synths.
The goal was to explore wind sounds as something made-up and performed. Inspiration came from old cartoons, and from elements of the many recordings of real wind, I have made in the past. From noisy pitch-modulated whooshes, to whistles, moans and overtones – all of which sometimes occur naturally around objects and openings hit by wind.
The star of the collection is a replica of the type of wind machine used in theaters and in old cartoons: a hand-cranked cylinder fitted with wooden slats, rotating against a piece of canvas. It is a very recognizable sound, but it took some trial and error getting the construction, the canvas, and the performance right. Gave me even more respect for the sound designers of Olde.
Further explorations in the possibilities of friction were done with mattresses, carpet tiles, metal springs and various types of cloth. All yielded quite interesting material.
Other sounds were performed by blowing through organ pipes and flutes, as well as other props that would cause interesting turbulence.
Finally, I experimented with the noise sources of analog synths, filtering them by hand, as well as by side-chaining cutoff and resonance to the envelopes of real wind recordings.
Some of these sounds come close to something realistic, but most take several artistic freedoms to what wind could sound like.
This library takes you on an acoustic journey to rainforests, beaches and rural areas of Costa Rica. Included are 73 recordings of tropical animals, such as insects, frogs, monkeys and birds, as well as recordings of the sea and rivers. The ambiences were captured at different times during day and night, in different weather conditions and in five different locations: Braulio Carrillo National Park, Cabo Matapolo (Osa Peninsula), Dos Brazos (Osa Peninsula), Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
Ambiences from South Italy is a collection of sounds recorded over summer in Rome, Naples, Vico Equense, Sorrento and Positano. Listen and walk through the historic landmarks: The Colosseum, Pantheon and the ancient town of Herculaneum. Visit the most densely populated cities in Italy, Rome and Naples, and hear the lively neighbourhoods, cobbled alleyways and ever-present traffic. This library also contains suburban recordings made in Sorrento, Vico Equense and Positano with busy marinas, flocked with tourists.
Garden and nature in April: the fresh spring air filled with a morning concert of birds, echoing neighborhood chatter, gardening sounds, dogs barking, roosters crowing, jets and propeller planes passing overhead, as well as the dead silence and eerie presence of nocturnal animals in the depths of the night; the awakening of nature and residents in the early morning hours, and much more.
‘Residential Forest II’ is the second library in my series of long-term recordings from a German allotment environment. This remote area, surrounded by forest, features cottages, ponds, and a rich array of natural sounds. The library blends suburban, residential, and forest ambiences.
‘Residential Forest II’ includes 59 unique ambiences recorded in Germany during spring, specifically in April 2022, from 4 p.m. to 4 p.m. the following day. From these 24 hours of recordings, I have carefully edited and curated the best moments, creating a 4 GB auditory journey from afternoon to evening, through the night, and into the morning and midday hours in this residential forest setting.
To capture the profound silence of the night, I used a matched pair of Rode NT1-A microphones with exceptionally low noise, paired with a Tascam HD-P1 recorder.
The total duration of the library is approximately 4 hours, with most ambiences ranging from 5 to 10 minutes. Some are longer, while a few are shorter.
‘Residential Forest II’ was recorded in AB stereophony at 48 kHz, 24-bit.
In this library you will find sounds of planes taking off and landing and ambient sounds of the airport near the runway.
These sounds were recorded as close to the airport fence as possible.
You will also find in the recordings at certain times an explosion as if it were a shot, these sounds are part of the airport system to keep birds away from the runway.
The name is bird scarer with gas cannon.
These sounds were all recorded with the stereo microphone Audio-Technica BP4025.
After working these sounds in post production, this library comes with 28 incredible airport ambient sounds.
In this library you will find features recordings of outdoor ambiences captured in the peaceful location in Ludo in the middle of Ria Formosa.
Most of this protected area corresponds to the Ria Formosa lagoon system, a string of islands and sandy peninsulas that extend parallel to the coast, thus protecting a lagoon where a labyrinth of marshes, channels, mudflats and islets develops.
These sounds are perfect for background sound design in movies, games, documentaries, art installations, etc.
These sounds were all recorded with the stereo microphone Audio-Technica BP4025.
After working these sounds in post production, this library comes with 12 incredible nature ambient sounds.
Nature’s Fury: Thunder is a large collection of thunder cracks, booms, and rumbles, as well as full Thunderstorm ambiance.
Nature’s Fury: Thunder has three separate categories: Thunder, Rumble, and Thunderstorm.
This audio library was recorded in the fortification complex “Fort Dönhoff’ of the citadel city of Königsberg, one of the fifteen main forts built in 1877-1881. When visiting historic buildings I always try to capture as many interesting and authentic sounds as I am able to find. This library offers the users 34 ready-to-use files which I hope will enrich your audio collections and might come in handy if you need to make SFX for games, movies, TV shows or quests. Also it will help you create an additional sound layer for any project that takes place in mansions, prisons and old houses.
This library contains:
-big, heavy gates;
-distant and close chains of different size;
-metal doors;
-old wood;
-various vintage gear;
-ambience.
The sound library includes detailed, complete, UCS compliant metadata.
With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.
A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!
We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!
A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!
I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!
A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
