Environment recordings, ambiences and soundscapes – from all over the world, and beyond
Many years of trekking in the Dovre mountains (Dovrefjell) at heights from 900 to 1200 masl. and temperatures reaching down to -20°C, has led to many unique recordings.
My main goal when on Dovrefjell was to capture the “sound” of the harsh climate that dominates up there. Subsequently it was hard to avoid the ever restless wind. But it can be quite tricky to capture the sound of wind (or rather the sound of wind on or through objects) and there are only some “sweet spots”, in this vast high altitude climate scattered with rocks and tiny trees, that will generate a good recording.
These recordings were done crouching behind rocks, on cliff sides, on top of summits, behind weathered shelters, old mountain farms and bushes. Partially freezing my hands of, operating recording equipment.

Get a collection of 134 impulse responses – recorded in the forest.
What if, instead of going to the forest to record the sound, we can find a way to bring the characteristics of the forest to us? Say, for example, we have recorded a sound in the studio like the sound of chopping wood or foley footsteps, but we want them to sound like they are in the forest?
There is a way to emulate this. To make our source sound like it is, in fact, in a forest. The answer is to use the impulse response of the forest and one of the convolution reverb plugins for your DAW.
An impulse response of the forest (or “forest IR”), is the sum of reflections from trees, foliage and the ground by very short signal at high volume. For this sound library, I recorded different impulses in a stereo at different locations of the forest with perfect conditions. Also, the library includes alternate versions of these impulses for use in the processing of the sounds that are far away from the listener.
For using these impulse responses, you need a convolution reverb plugin (not included). The library can be used with the built-in convolution plugins in many DAWs like ProTools, FL Studio amd Sony Vegas, and there are other commercial options on the market, but costs can be high. For starters, you can use a free convolution reverb from the following
LiquidSonics’ Reverberate LE (Win)
SIR by Christian Knufinke (Win)
A wide choice of IR’s will allow you to choose the most appropriate nuanced impulse response for your material. As you gain more experience with this forest IR, you will find that you can quickly adjust the ratio and volume level for wet and dry channels and effectively use other options of convolution reverb. This powerful forest reverb emulation will be incredibly effective for your sounds.

Recorded in 96k / 24 bit with Sound Devices 702t – All files are three minutes each.
In films and documentaries there are often images of people in spaces speaking to other people, who are listening attentively.
The recordings of the person doing the talking are pristine from the set. The recordings of the rest of the room don’t exist. Room tones of empty spaces don’t possess movement and life that your soundtracks require for these situations.
Quiet Spaces is a collection of recordings of people gathered in rooms of various sizes and not talking
Libraries are a natural place to capture these environments, and so a high quality stealth kit made from a pair of Sanken CUB 01s discreetly placed from a backpack onto empty tables in various libraries. We also got access to a university campus right at the end of finals week where we recorded out in the open with a pair of MKH50s in ORTF. We captured an entire class taking a test, as well as various other lightly and sparsely populated spaces in and around campus.
The end result is a beautiful set of recordings of quiet spaces that are still filled with texture and movement.

Recorded throughout 3 seasons, during the course of more than 10 matches on Sport Lisboa & Benfica’s beautiful Estádio da Luz, Soccer Stadium Ambience gathers a wide range of crowd reactions and emotions; useful for background ambiences that can be applied not only on audiovisual football content but also on other large stadium sports-based projects.
All prominent dialogue between supporters was either removed or toned down with the aid of mastering and EQing software, in order to preserve the neutral nature of this library, allowing certain crowd reactions to flow naturally. There are also no long fade-ins our fade-outs, permitting whoever acquires this library to create their own edits and collages however deemed necessary. Some very light wind and noise removal techniques were applied on certain audio files, without impairing the original mood presented by the crowd.
Between long takes of supporters singing, booing, celebrating goals, reacting to good team moves and bad referee decisions, this nearly 3 hour long library recorded in an always packed location will provide the necessary emotional crowd feedback to your sports-based projects.
Above & Below puts traffic ambience in a new perspective: This library features 70+ minutes of traffic ambience above and below bridges, hills, underpass, overpass, buildings, walkway bridges, and more.
Recorded in 96 kHz / 24 bit – All files last five minutes and thirty seconds each.
Sometimes emotion comes when you feel together as one. This is happening in stadiums, arenas, demonstrations when people are as one voice. This collection gets you the power of the crowd. People will go through various feelings, sometimes silent or very noisy, you will be able to cover a lot of situations with it. Moreover ambisonic format-B 3D recordings are great to enhance those kind of situations.
Office Space is an extensive and the go-to collection for clean and constant office environment room tones and ambiences. The library has over 6 hours / 11.7 GB worth of material that covers a whole large modern office building from top to bottom. The length of each room tone is 3 minutes and all the room tones are calibrated to -30 LUFS.
Office Space was recorded with a custom designed very low self-noise (4.5 dB) ORTF rig that gives you only the noise of the room and minimal noise from the recording equipment itself.
The huge variety in the sounds of the room tones gives you a great palette to experiment with various sound design tools so you can create e.g. spaceship ambiences, drones and otherworldly textures.
You get the sounds in two formats: 96 kHz, 24 bit and in 44.1 KHz, 16 bit, for more convenient ways of utilizing the sounds in games and other media.

Here are ambient and specific recordings of rustling leaves, fluttering twigs and creaking trunks. Pine and Fir trees, Beechwood hedgerows and leafless Oak trees, along tall grass and reeds. All in all, a collection representative of the cultured landscape in Denmark, as well as much of northern Europe. I was lucky enough to record a storm during the last days of 2016, and those sounds are of course included here. No human voices or man-made sounds, but a few of the sounds have bird vocalizations in them. All files are UCS-compliant.
The focus is rather narrow, going for many nuances of the same flavor – rather than many flavors. If you need sounds of a storm or gale in northern European vegetation, then this should fit the bill. Note that there is audible buffeting in several files. I opted to leave it in there, as it might suit some purposes, and let me keep the most violent passages. You can try your luck with noise reduction, but since wind is mostly broadband noise anyway, it might not turn out well. YMMV.
A few sounds appear in both mono and stereo versions, where the stereo version are X/Y derived from the M/S source files and the mono versions are simply the Mid channel. I did this, because most people seem to prefer X/Y files for post-work, rather than M/S – but a down-mix of X/Y to mono would be inferior to using the original Mid-mic signal. All sounds were captured in Denmark between October and January.
SILENTSCAPES is a collection of 36 high quality recorded and fully mastered romtoones, ambiences and background sounds.
The sound library contains both indoor and outdoor sounds and the sound editing was done to obtain constant and quiet ambiences.
All sounds can be used as the first and neutral sounding layer of your projects, to give support and consistency to dialogue and sfx tracks. Otherwise they can be used as sound sweeteners for existing background ambiences or sound sources for new sound shaping.
I will keep adding to this, these are the winds I always wish I had. No “huge gale force crap” here. These are all gentle lonely winds, with and without organic material.
I don’t know how else to say this is a great collection of soft deep winds. Perfect for quiet details with lots of emotion.

With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.
A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!
We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!
A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!
I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!
A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
