California Grassland Wildlife is a collection of 95 Stereo and 33 Quad Recordings of over 30 different species of birds that can be found in Grassland, Plains, and High Desert Environments. Also included are a few recordings of Coyotes, Grasshoppers, Insects. Some other quieter ambiences are included as well.
Most of the recordings from this library took place in The Carrizo Plain, an open expanse of Grassland that spans 50 miles long and 15 miles wide West of the Mojave Desert in California’s Central Valley. It’s an arid area far from any towns, and a fairly harsh environment that most years gets very little rain. A number of dirt roads go on for miles and stretch across the flat plain and hilly landscape, eventually leading up to the Temblor and Caliente Ranges. Abandoned and weathered dilapidated remnants of old ranches, water tanks, barns, metal sheds, farm machinery, vehicles, and corrals from a bygone era of the west can be discovered if one ventures off the beaten path.
At first glance, one wouldn’t think there’d be much wildlife out there, but I discovered it’s an area that has quite a bit going on. A lot of the old structures, along with the few areas with trees become the resting place and shelters for birds and animals. Over a span of two years I made a number of trips to this location trying to capture as much of the local wildlife as I could.
Included are sounds from Dawn, Morning, Afternoon, Dusk, and late evening. Perspectives vary from extremely close to medium and distant. I’ve split out the sounds by species and more Active, Medium, Specific, in order to give a lot of flexibility when trying to use these sounds for projects.
Barn Owls chirping overhead, the single rhythmic call of Bell’s Sparrows, the close hooting of Great Horned Owl’s, the constant cooing of Doves, Ravens slowly traveling over an open field, Finches swarming and providing quite the cacophony. Detailed sounds of wings of birds and grasshoppers. Coyotes howling in the distance. It was a lot of fun putting this one all together.
California Grassland Abandoned is the companion library to this one and is more focused on Ambiences, winds, and sounds from Abandoned Structures.
Prominent Birds with multiple recordings
Barn Owl, Bell’s Sparrow, Bullock’s Oriole, Cassin’s Kingbird, Common Nighthawk, Eurasian Collared-Dove, House Finch, Great Horned Owl, Mourning Dove, Raven, Say’s Phoebe, Western Kingbird

Andaman and Nicobar tropical islands library is a rare collection of soundscapes captured in one of the Earth’s most remote jungles positioned in the middle of the ocean. These extensive groups of islands not only hold great biodiversity with many endemic species but are also still inhabited by real tribes that have no contact with the outside world. Mindfully curated sounds captured by one of the world’s most silent and sensitive omnidirectional microphones.
Recorded over an entire year, Ultrasonic Insects Volume 2 contains dozens of new insect songs recorded with love, precision and a lot of patience! More than 3 000 kilometers were traveled to get to 12 beautiful french sites sheltering common and endemic species. All insects were recorded in quiet environments with close-miking for unparalleled quality.
Want to get brand new sound material from nature? Listen to the songs of those tiny creatures, pitch them as much as you want and find inspiration for your next sound design.

Crickets. A lot of crickets. It was quite a deafening experience recording this.
I’ve captured increments with a handheld ORTF pair of Sennheiser 8040s on a boom pole pointing at the loudest sound source and then switched to 2 DPA 4060s that recorded throughout the night. This offered a bit of variation in the intensity of sound and quantity of crickets performing for you that night. You can hear occasional tropical birds towards the morning.
The library offers around 6 hours of audio and I’ve also cut below 1.7 kHz & 4 kHz to offer a bit more isolation for crickets. This is done on separate takes as an option.
All tracks are recorded with Sennheiser Mkh416 and DPA 4060 mics interior, either in a studio space or living room, and contain wings flapping, buzzing, crawling, and pass bys from the little critters.
Featuring both small and big fat fly recordings, The Housefly sound effects library is 15 tracks of close up encounters with alot of buzz in it.
All tracks are recorded interior, either in a studio space or living room, and contain wings flapping, buzzing, crawling, and pass bys from the little critters.
15 tracks, mono and stereo. 180Mb recorded with Sennheiser Mkh416 and DPA 4060 mics. UCS ready!
This library focuses on isolated recordings of single insects, mainly from Northern Europe. While all insects have been recorded in the wild in Northern Europe, most also appear in all of Europe, Asia, North Africa and some have been introduced to America and Australia too.
For this library I recorded various species of wild bees, wasps, bugs, cicades, grasshoppers, flys, dragonflies, butterflies, ants, sandfleas and underwater bugs. A detailed list of all species is at the end.
You will find flybys, wing buzzes, hums, rattles, little feet, stridulations, jumps and even bites.
Over the course of years I improved my recording of these little animals by approaching them with a set of different micing techniques, always looking for the best spots to record these small creatures, making sure not to disturb them.
Many recordings were performed with microphones and recorders that go up to 192kHz to capture the ultra frequencies emitted by some individuals. Some grasshoppers you won’t even hear unless you pitch them down or play them slower.
While I find their crispy, clear and often bassy sounds lovely, some of the noises of the animals can be decribed as annoying, scary, sharp or intensive.
But besides for the original recorded species, these noises can be used to create swarms or all kind of insects or little creatures, like elves, aliens and fairies.
In addition to the close up recordings, I added a few swarms, real and designed, a couple of ambiences and a few designed insect sounds.
Some of the 60+ species (for details check file list):
Apex Furrowed Bee, Big Fly, Black Tailed Skimmer, Blow Fly, Blue Winged Grasshopper, Bow Winged Grasshopper, Buff Tailed Bumblebee, Butterflies, Purple Emperor, Honey Bee, Mosquito, Wild Bees, Carder Bee, Chelostoma Rapunzuli, Chrysogaster Solstitialis, Cloromia Formosa, Common Field Cricket, Common Green Bottle Fly, Common Wasp, Conocephalus Fuscus, Dragonfly, Drone Fly, Early Bumblebee, Eristalis Pertinax, Eupeodes Luniger, European Orchard Bee, European Wasp, European Wool Carder Bee, False Stable Fly, Field Grasshopper, Flesh Fly, Fly of the Dead, Flying Ant, Gnat, Great Green Bush Cricket, Green Blowfly, Green Rose Chafer, Grey Backed Mining Bee, Gypsy Cuckoo Bee, Hairy Footed Flower Bee, Helophilus Trivittatus, Hornet Hoverfly, House Fly, Italian Tree Cricket, Jigger Flea, Large Bee Fly, March Crane Fly, Meadow Grasshopper, Myathropa Florea, Painted Lady, Pale-saddled Leucozona, Red Tailed Bumblebee, Red Wood Ant, Sand Bee, Sand Wasp, Sawfly Macrophia Montana, Sceliphron Curvatum, Tritomegas Bicolor, Underwater Insects, White Tailed Bumblebee, Wood Cricket,…

Welcome to Mutant Insects – Flying! This library gathers a wide range of oversized designed flying insects along with an extremely rich source recordings toolbox. If you need flying insects or just wing sounds in general, than this is the library to get! This collection allows you to quickly and easily create every flying creature and mutant you might have in mind, but also is very helpful to sweeten or emphasize details with natural layers for real life documentaries, games or feature films. These insect sounds are more impressive than the sounds of real life insects so we called them “MUTANT insects”. This collection is used in several Hollywood productions such as by Tim Nielsen (Senior Sound Designer) on the Dark Crystal series. Created by Red Libraries by Frederic Devanlay (Solar Sky, Future Weapons) and Thibault Csukonyi (Robotic Lifeforms 2, Sinematic 2)
“This library is a dream come true for anyone designing or cutting insect wings. The variety of sounds to play with is amazing, and I find myself going back to this library again and again anytime I have to play in the ‘insect’ world. Wonderful sounds indeed!”
– Tim Nielsen (Star Wars, Toy Story 3, Dark Crystal – Senior Sound Designer)

Northern Italy is 90 minutes/2.9 Gb of ambiance recordings of rural Northern Italy. 22 separate files – recorded in 24bit/96kHz A-B stereo. All sounds are UCS-compatible.
Northern Italy was recorded in July 2019 (pre-Covid), and features ambiance recordings from just outside the small village of Entratico, near Bergamo, Italy. This is hill-country, with meandering gravel-roads, small farms, sheep-bells and lots of crickets. In fact, in this terrain, insects seem to be the only sound sources which are always near. Everything else, from dogs and roosters, to church-bells and airplanes, seems always to be distant. Lots of laid-back rural atmosphere here.
Crickets are quite a dominant feature in these recordings, and there are several variations recorded both day & night. Some are quite loud (the ones with “LOUD” in the file names), so be careful with playback.
This library takes you on an acoustic journey to rainforests, beaches and rural areas of Costa Rica. Included are 73 recordings of tropical animals, such as insects, frogs, monkeys and birds, as well as recordings of the sea and rivers. The ambiences were captured at different times during day and night, in different weather conditions and in five different locations: Braulio Carrillo National Park, Cabo Matapolo (Osa Peninsula), Dos Brazos (Osa Peninsula), Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.

Though these birds are in an abundance around most harbours and industry around here, they are not always easy to record. You mostly hear them from a distance, or from places not easy to access. When you try to get close to them, they will usually fly away.
Many hours have been spent on rooftops, gardens, backyards, a junkyard, and different harbours to get this material.

With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.

A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!

We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!

A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!

I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!

A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
