But in a addition it is a fantastic sound design tool to create all kind of machinery from steam punk to futuristic motors. It also is very valuable for musicians, with a fantastic selection of roasted & green espresso beans poured, shaken and dropped on various surfaces. From a single bean to thousands of beans. Makes great percussion sounds.

    Most recording session have been in my studio, but I also visited a roasting plant, where I was able to record various machines across the stages of roasting and packing coffee.

    Some extra recordings are pouring of coffee and milk or destroying an old caffee machine.

    Mics used: Earthworks QTC50 (records up 90kHz, linear up to 50kHz), Neumann KMR81i, Schoeps MK41, DPA 4061, Brauner Phantom, Shure SM57, Contact, EMF, Lewitt 540s (very quiet for single beans dropping on the floor).

    I had some projects that needed coffee maker sounds in the past. And while there is a fantastic library with antique grinders from “The Soundcatcher” and some libraries with a Espresso Machine or a Coffee Machine, I was missing one that combines all of these sounds up to dropping a sugar cube into the coffee. So i created it myself and here it is.

    SOUNDS FROM A BUCKET

    The centerpiece of this extraordinary metal sound library is a custom built instrument. A metal bucket has been attached to various guitar strings and clamped into wooden gallows. The recordings sound as creepy as the idea and range from deep, scary vibrations to unbearable squeaks.

    PLAYING A BUCKET

    The bucket instrument has then been bowed, plucked and played with an Ebow, over a range of three octaves and in different styles & intensities. Different techniques have been used and abused to coax the most interesting sounds out if it.

    Microphones were placed inside of the bucket for the boomy part and outside for the delicate sound content. Furthermore, a pair of contact mics had been attached to the metal surface.

    After harvesting tons of interesting sound material, the crop was extensively edited and processed to create hits, transitions, ambiences & more.

    ULTRASONIC FREQUENCIES

    With the additional use of Sanken CO-100K microphones, ultrasonic frequency content up to 100kHz has been captured and the squeakiest sounds have been pitched down to half speed before inclusion into this 96kHz sound library. You can pitch everything down one octave without trimming the full audible frequency spectrum. Unknown soundscapes are waiting to get discovered!

    A big selection of metal objects like bells, singing bowls, huge metal plates and giant gongs have been played, hit and brought to vibration. Metal bars, springs, grids and other metal items have been scraped, rubbed, dropped, shaken and struck.

    KLAP Sound took a piano and tortured it, dismembered it and finally destroyed it—and recorded the whole process. For the making of this library, they used several tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, knives, and saws, as well as props like dirt, send, gravel, forks and other sharp objects.     A massive electro-acoustic drone SFX library reft from a custom designed and hand-built instrument! These drones were coaxed from a unique instrument using the power of air.  No harsh picking or plucking, just assorted techniques for moving air deftly across the strings.

    The guitar, Yvaine, was recorded simultaneously via two tracks (one direct and another amped and mic’d) and was set to 23 different tunings to encompass the full spectrum of her voice, character, and soul. The tunings are as follows:

For some of the overdriven amped recordings, we even experimented with creative NR settings for the modulation of artificial harmonics…and kept some of the more colorful results! Between the two different tracks, multiple takes were made per strength, per position, per recording. Depending on which takes were best, some of the DI and amped captures matched, while others were physically different. This offers unique layering capabilities for some sets while allowing for variety in others. Some of the sets are missing particular strength recordings at specific positions. But if a capture wasn’t appropriate, we didn’t include it.

    This is a bountiful collection of droning goodness. Use it for good.

    Box 3. MFO Weird Sound Generator:weird sound box
    A DIY analog synth built from a kit, this box yields a broad palette of thick, dynamic, chunky synth tones and evolving textures.
    After tweaking knobs and rolling for hours, each chunk of sound that made the cut was carefully edited, tagged, and then further sculpted to achieve its final state.
    In Kontakt a broad palette of luscious pads, thick warm basses, and polyphonic instruments emerged from the source textures.

     
    Box 4. Dementia Labs optical theremin:
    thereminA DIY circuit bent one-off custom theremin, this one features an elaborate unlabeled patchbay, a bunch of unlabeled knobs, and a light sensor as a modulator.
    This box yielded tons of static and crunchy textures, as well as some very retro sounding musical pads.
    The Kontakt patches turned into a pile of far out synths, analog crackles, and fuzzy goodness.

    Note: Can be used without Kontakt too!
     All Kontakt instrument libraries include fully unlocked and accessible metadata tagged .wav files. You don't need any version of Kontakt to use these files as a standalone sample library.
