Universal Category System (UCS)

Sound effects libraries where the file names and metadata follow the Universal Category System (UCS), championed by renowned sound supervisor Tim Nielsen & more

  • This library contains 410 sounds of cleanly recorded, realistic sword sounds.

    Including:
    • Sword impacts on swords
    • Swords colliding and sliding
    • Swords impacting on armour
    • Swords sheathing
    • Swords unsheathing
    • and Whooshes

I have left in some natural rings so it can be used with the natural ring.

Or it can be cut out to allow more control.

(The example listed has background ambience and some reverb to show how the sounds can be naturally implemented into a soundscape)

  • This library, recorded during a trip to the ominous Death Valley USA in February 2021, features sounds of the harsh desert being carved by winter winds, as well as sounds of life such as wetland birds from the oasis at Ash Meadows. If you listen closely to the recordings from the infamous Devil’s Hole, and inhospitable Salt Creek, you can hear the endangered pupfish bark. Many recording styles were used to capture immersive stereo images of the landscape that provides such stark contrasts being both foreboding and breathtaking in its beauty, included are surround and binaural recordings. This is by no means a comprehensive collection, if anything I learned that I have much more to discover about Death Valley than I thought I did starting out.

Sale Policy: To keep things simple, I never put any of my libraries on sale or offer any kind of discount. I sell them at a reasonable price given the effort to record and compile them, I find this is the most honest and transparent approach to the sale of sound effects.

  • Niger Sahara Desert, ambiences and sound effects library By Iben Haahr Andersen

Back in 2004 Iben Haahr Andersen travelled to Niger on an amazing journey into the Sahara desert.

Her job was to follow a large group of nomads, travelling on camels back for 10 days to the desert town of Agadez to purchase sweet dates, which they would later sell to make a living.

Through 10 days of extreme heat and hard labour, Iben recorded everything from the most beautiful and quiet starry nights, to daily life and struggle of the nomad people, sandstorms and desert wind, an interior mountain well, and grunts and cries from nomads precious desert animals, the camels.

Iben came back to Denmark with a huge amount of DAT tapes, which now have been mastered in Protools, spectral repaired in Izotope RX, and with great help from Tim Nielsen & Michal Fojcik made UCS-Compliant in Soundminer, for a very special set of audio recordings!

117 stereo tracks recorded on to a portable DAT recorder @ 48khz 16 bit. Set is about 4gb big when unzipped.

Mics used, Sennheiser Mkh416 with an ATE 208 Emesser on top.

    Sounds included are:

    • Agadez chaotic traffic scenes
    • Rain and distant thunder
    • Native nomad walla from children and adults
    • Nomads working and socialising
    • Close up and isolated prayers, talks and the cursing of a thief from a local priest
    • Quiet ambiences
    • Birds and a few bugs

    • Donkey brays
    • Camel grunts, gurgles and cries
    • Sandstorms and wind through tent camp
    • Interior mountain well with the most beautiful reverberation
    • Footsteps of humans and camel caravan passing on sand
  • “The Shoe Collection: Soft Hardwood – Socks“ by Periscope Post & Audio, provides 22 high quality footsteps on soft hardwood floors with socks.  The audio files are recorded at 24bit, 192k with mono and stereo recordings.  The Sennheiser MKH-60 was used for the mono files with a slightly more distant mic placement than the stereo files, which were recorded with the Sennheiser MKH8050 and the Sennheiser MKH-30 near the sock.  From different walking speeds, to jogging, sprinting, jumping, hard stops, scuffs, and more!  We are also packaging the option of a different EQ curve to reduce some of the lower thump of the sock.  There are several performances with each file to fit the right action you need.  438 Footsteps per version. That’s a whopping 876 footsteps between the mono and stereo files!

These sound files are also UCS metadata tagged

  • Environments & Ambiences Expressive Winds Play Track 107 sounds included, 585 mins total $80
If you want to hear more examples and learn about how I made this you can listen to this episode on spotify. Beware: only if you can stand 10 minute monologues about sound effects and field recording spoken in english with a weird danish/dutch accent

Expressive Winds is striking, unusual, and distinct.
I wanted to make a collection of wind sounds made for moments when the wind conveys an emotional message or sets the tone for a scene. The collection features howling, whistling, buffeting, gusty, and rushing winds, all with pronounced character. I experimented in the whole range from powerful and dynamic to slow and static. Some are gritty and dark, while others are otherworldly or light. Many are tonal or designed, but all stand out as something unique.

Through a couple of months of fun experimentation each night it turned out to be more than 9.5 hours of stereo wind sounds across 107 files. All files are thoroughly and carefully tagged with metadata and have UCS-compliant file naming.

I had a blast making this, I hope you’ll have too working with it!

  • Roomtones Hospital Ambiance Play Track 24 sounds included, 59 mins total $33

Hospital Ambiance is 59 minutes/1.80 Gb of ambiance recordings from an old hospital. 24 separate files – recorded in 24bit/96kHz A-B stereo. All sounds are UCS-compatible.

Hospital Ambiance was recorded in the rooms and corridors of the old (now defunct) Aarhus County Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. A prominent feature is the lack of acoustical treatment in corridors and hallways, giving a rather hard and reverberant sound, which is typical of Danish public building styles of the 1930’s and 40’s.

Elevators and automatic doors are heavy and noisy; humming and clanking as patients and staff pass through them. Electric vehicles used to move patients and supplies around inside the complex are old and not exactly noiseless either. Finally, while I did not have access to operating rooms or the like, I did get into a couple of basement corridors, where there were less people and more Hvac noise (yay!).

In some of the recordings, faint, muffled or smeared voices can be heard. While I have removed passages with distinctly Danish words (which might also be connected with specific, recognizable persons), there is still a certain tone and pitch to the Danish language, which may come through on occasion.
All in all, this is the sound of a place that is no more, as this old hospital is being turned into expensive apartments or something to that effect.

  • This library features a broad variety of rain sounds.

Interior – Inside various cars, in attics, houses, wood sheds and garages

Exterior – In the forest, on roofs (house, cabin, car), on concrete, dry leaves, bodies of water, metal, umbrellas and more

The single drops section is the heart of the library. There is a big amount of drips, that can be used to sweeten your rain ambience layers but also to design rain from scratch f.e. with software like Sound Particles or granular samplers. I recorded three kind of isolated dripping sounds in a studio setting:

Single Drops – Isolated tiny to bigger drops / splashes on plenty of surfaces, from glass, dirt, grass (real & artificial), wood, stone, concrete, water, cloth, plastic to metal and more

Multiple Drops – Clusters of water drops on various surfaces

Pour – Small extracts of poured water on various surfaces

Artifical Sweetener – two kind of Rainmaker and several frying tempeh (vegan variation of bacon)  sounds, that add movement and wetness to your rain layers

If you are working with Sound Particles, this library includes a couple of projects, that you can use as is or as a starting point to create your own rain with included samples. That way you can fit your rain sounds to the exact intensity, gusts and dynamics of your picture or pictured rain.
