Want to take your magic sound design beyond the typical chimes and whooshes? Dr Iain McGregor has kindly allowed us to share his insights on how you can approach your magic sounds in a new way:
1. Start in the real world, then transform it
Begin with the sound of life as it is. A rug slides across a wooden floor. A glass rings and fades. A gust of wind stirs the leaves.
Then the sound changes.
The rug’s fibres hum in low pulses. The glass’s tone stretches into vowel shapes, half-speaking in a strange tongue. The wind’s rush starts before it moves the leaves, harmonics blooming as if the air is rehearsing.
Small wobbles in pitch suggest strain. A brief glitch hints at instability. Phase widening pushes the sound beyond the physical speakers, while a binaural shift makes it seem to brush past the listener’s shoulder.
Complexity can start minimal, with a single harmonic shift and one modulation rate, then grow as the spell deepens, adding layers, spectral detail, and interlocking rhythmic elements.
If we are meant to empathise with the caster, the transformation follows their gestures closely, their sonic presence leading the mix. If with the object, its reactions dominate, making the caster’s influence distant or indirect.
Magic has a life cycle: push, flow, brake. Strength is in how far the sound bends. Cost is in the strain of starting or stopping. Skill is in the smoothness of each stage. Complexity is in how many interacting elements can be balanced at once.
2. Play with time
A book lands on a shelf and freezes mid-resonance, holding for an impossible moment before finishing its tone. A chair creaks, slowed in one ear to a deep groan while fibres chatter quickly in the other. A gust’s echo arrives before the wind itself.
Endless climbs in tension can be built with Shepard tones or Risset glissandi. Pre-echoes from reversed impulse responses can foreshadow a magical event before it happens. Occasional spectral smears, as if the sound is slipping out of focus, keep the ear alert.
Complexity here might mean multiple temporal manipulations layered together. One slowing, another accelerating, a third reversing, each affecting a different spectral band or spatial path.
To guide empathy, we can let the caster’s timing dominate if we want their intent to be felt, or let the object’s own internal pacing win out if we want the audience to feel for it instead.
3. Remove normal spatial rules
A spell’s sound might leap in a straight line from caster to object. Or arc in spirals. Or zigzag between targets.
Sometimes it tries to escape. Like mercury spilling or a wild horse pulling at the reins, it rushes to nearby objects, brushing them with faint, distorted versions of their own voices.
Spatial illusions can reinforce the effect. Precedence effect tricks can make the sound arrive from two places at once. Impossible Doppler shifts can make objects feel alive without moving. Short, unexpected surges in loudness make the magic feel as if it is straining against control.
Complexity can be expressed as multiple simultaneous spatial paths, each carrying its own timbre or harmonic layer, converging or diverging unpredictably.
If empathy is with the caster, the spatial focus may return to them as a centre point. If with the object, the magic might seem to orbit or retreat toward it, even during the exchange.
4. Let the world and the objects react
In this approach, only humans are unaware. Everything else notices.
Before the spell begins, the world pauses. Birds stop. Leaves freeze mid-rustle. The floor holds still.
When magic is welcome, a rug hums with delight and a glass trills in harmony. When it is feared, tones grow sharp and textures pull away. Directional spectral filtering can make stationary objects sound as if they shift away in space when fearful.
Complexity can emerge in the layering of these reactions. Not just one sound shifting, but a chorus of subtle changes across the environment, each with its own emotional tone.
If we want the audience to care for the object, its emotional state is foregrounded in the mix. If for the caster, the world’s reactions serve as a mirror to their skill, control, or recklessness.
5. Sonic traces
Even after the spell ends, fragments linger. Harmonic shimmers return when you pass the spot. Faint echoes follow certain movements.
Over time, these traces become a code the audience can learn. They begin to recognise that certain residues mean an object has been altered, while others mark areas left untouched. The ear starts to catalogue these clues subconsciously, building an internal map of what the magic has changed in the world. This means the audience begins to understand the extent of magic in the narrative world, and its effect on people, places, and objects.
Traces can fade through spectral narrowing until only the original sound remains. Looped micro-textures, buried low, can give the impression of a faint Shepard-like cycle. Occasional tiny glitches in those traces draw the listener back in, like ripples on still water.
Complexity here can be in the persistence of different trace layers. Some fading quickly, others taking minutes or hours to resolve, each tied to different parts of the spell.
If empathy lies with the caster, these traces may be shaped to reflect their lingering influence. If with the object, the traces can sound like residual scars or memories it carries.
6. Sonic intent and alignment
The sound can reveal what the magic does, and also why.
White magic may carry warm harmonics and consonant intervals, spreading in a wide, enveloping stereo field. Black magic may twist into unstable overtones, narrowing into a sharp, invasive point. Grey magic might shift between beauty and unease, widening and narrowing unpredictably.
Complexity might be revealed in how intent is layered. A base harmonic palette overlaid with conflicting textures, shifts in spatial width, or contrasting rhythmic pulses that make the magic feel morally ambiguous.
To draw empathy toward the caster, intent cues may mirror their personality or morality. To draw it toward the object, the sound may convey how the magic feels from its perspective, either cherished or violated.
7. Permanence and reversibility
Some magic leaves the world changed forever. Other spells fade, reverse, or can be undone in moments.
Permanent change might be signalled by the sound “locking” into place, harmonics settling, modulation stopping, and reverberation drying up. The final tone may have a closing quality, like a latch catching.
Temporary change could keep background textures faintly alive, as if counting down to expiry. Harmonics might drift subtly until they return to their original state.
Easily reversed magic might leave the original sound intact beneath the transformation, ready to resurface. An inverted or mirrored version of the transformation sound could act as an audible key to unlock the change.
Complexity can be heard in how the transformation resists or yields to reversal. A simple magic might undo in one smooth gesture, while a complex one might need many interwoven sonic “locks” to open.
Empathy can be reinforced here. If the change is harmful and permanent, the audience might side with the object. If it is healing and lasting, they might side with the caster.

8. The living laws of magic sound
In this approach, the sound is the magic. If it stops, the magic stops. A clipped tone, a sudden masking noise, or a stolen frequency collapses the spell instantly.
Every magical act speaks in its own sonic language. Timbre shifts, modulation patterns, spectral spreads, and rhythmic pulses form its grammar and vocabulary. This language is two-way — the caster gives instructions, and the object replies with confirmation, resistance, or hesitation, all within the same shared code. The audience may not grasp the meaning at first, but over time they begin to recognise the sonic equivalents of “bind,” “release,” “shield,” or “reshape.”
The sound never entirely disappears. It leaves sonic shadows — residues that react to new sounds. A passing footstep might trigger a faint answering resonance where magic was cast. Shadows from different spells can harmonise into something strangely coherent or clash into harsh distortion, each with consequences in the narrative world.
Magic can also behave like an auditory parasite. It attaches itself to sounds already in the environment, drawing strength from their presence. If the surroundings fall silent, the magic weakens. Skilled casters may deliberately create or nurture sound sources to sustain their spells.
Some spells carry sonic prophecies: distinctive timbral shifts, spectral movements, or modulation cycles that only reveal their purpose much later in the story, once enough other spells have been heard. These patterns act as an embedded code, rewarding attentive listeners with foreshadowing and hidden links between moments.
Closing thoughts
These eight pillars are not a prescription, and they do not replace the chimes, whooshes, crackles, and bursts that audiences already love. Instead, they offer a way to extend the vocabulary of magic, to let sound itself become a living part of the spell rather than only its decoration.
By starting with the real world and transforming it, playing with time, breaking spatial rules, letting the world react, leaving traces, signalling intent, revealing permanence, and establishing the living laws of magic sound, we can create a coherent set of rules that an audience can learn over time.
In this framework, magic is not just heard. It is a two-way conversation between caster and object. It has consequences that ripple through the world. It leaves signs that can be decoded, shadows that respond to later events, and even an underlying language that rewards close listening.
The aim is not to dictate how magic should sound, but to suggest that it can be more than a single moment’s effect. It can be part of a larger system that grows richer every time the audience hears it.
