Tim Hinman starts his series about the sounds of cities as described by their artists. The sound designers of Dunkirk discuss the meticulous soundtrack and Nolan’s infamous approach to dialogue. Brian Guichard talks about “musical auras” when experiencing epileptic seizures on Twenty Thousand Hertz. Matt and Gord talk about advocating for and referencing audio with clients. Bobby O goes into what the Cambridge Analytica scandal means for your music and social media presence. Vince, Kyle, and Mike do a GDC day-to-day wrap-up about who and what they saw. And midierror hosts a new podcast and speaks to Kenny Young about a whole slew of topics including VR audio and getting into the industry. Happy listening!
Episode outline: ‘So many of us live in the hustle and bustle of cities – vibrant, lively but noisy and distracting soundscapes. How do we exist among this noise? How do we listen through it to the smaller sounds, the delicate and subtle sounds that bring us peace, joy, inspiration? Series three of Sound Matters kicks off an eight-part international journey – The Sound Of The Cities – starting at home in Copenhagen, Denmark. Host and writer Tim Hinman discovers the world’s (possibly) oldest home sound system in the Renaissance-era Rosenborg Castle, and then artist Katinka Fogh Vindelev guides Tim through the echo-chamber-like Round Tower, surprising a swath of tourists when she sings a song for the building itself. We hope this podcast will forever change how you hear your world – please listen closely.’

Episode outline: ‘We wrap up our Oscar nominees series with the team from Dunkirk. In this two part episode, the artists show how the carefully engineered track builds and maintains tension for the entire running time of the movie, with music playing almost continuously from the opening shot of soldiers walking down the street to the moment Finn falls asleep on the train. They talk about how the mixing time works: they make a complete pass through the film and screen it every week during the final mix; and finally, why director Christopher Nolan feels you don’t necessarily need to understand every word of dialog in his films.
“Everything is evaluated for its emotional content as it goes into the mix. Even the dialog has a pace, and a pulse, and a purpose in our mix, and it sits exactly where [Christopher Nolan] orchestrates it to be.” Gary Rizzo
“[Composer] Hans [Zimmer] is making the sounds that the audience hears, and I’m making the sounds that the characters hear.” Richard King
Oscar nominees: Alex Gibson, Gregg Landaker, Richard King, Gary Rizzo, Mark Weingarten’

Episode outline: ‘Here again for episode 47. We talk about getting people on board with audio and how to communicate around that. And how to analyze reference sounds and music to give clients what they’re looking for. And we answer some questions.
If you’re going to GDC and see this before then, we’re doing a live recording of our next episode and hang out.’
