This week we have plenty of ringing, pounding, shredding, and nat sounds to go around. In this recap you will find ambient libraries that capture the urban atmospheres of Berlin, crowd noises in museums and parks, ghostly 3D ambiences, and the creepy creaks and hums that come from “deep-recording” an office building at midnight. You will also find sounds of jackhammers, paper shredders, metal textures, and not one – but two – rotary phones. If you’re looking for something different, check these libraries out!
'Home Grown Metal' by Ronan Quigley is a fun, eclectic library that presents metal textures and tones with a new edge for your sound design. With over 1,100 sounds and 76 minutes of content, you will find sounds of mechanisms, coins, CPU fans, cutlery, squeaky metal drawers and doors, grills, yard tools and much more. These are not your conventional creaks and 'shings' either; some of these objects have curvy tones that you will likely not find anywhere else. For diverse metal textures with a flexible 192kHz sample rate, check out 'Home Grown Metal'.
'Room Tones – Office Building' by Detunized is a collection of room tones that you can tell were discovered by Stephan Marche. These sounds are not your typical white noise ambiences or boring air-conditioner hums; they were recorded in the wee hours of the night to capture otherworldly tones, unknown hums, clicking automatic lights, creaking doors, and more. The library also features sounds of elevators, neon lights, and faraway ambiences through the windows. Each of the 79 files are high-quality and full-spectrum, making the complex sounds of 'Room Tones – Office Building' easily able to stand on their own.
'Ghosts' by Articulated Sounds is a collection of 3D haunted sounds that swirl and creep around you. You will find spooky hisses, whistles, creaks, whispers and plenty of sounds you can't quite put your finger on. With Ambisonic, 5.1, and stereo formats, you will receive 20 ambiences and 125 elements for VR and 360 video content in the Designed Library and 545 mono sound sources in the Construction Kit - helping you create your own interactive and immersive soundscapes. If you want the Complete Bundle of 'Ghosts', get ready to have 4 hours and almost 1,000 files at your fingertips.
'Ambience Crowds 2' by 2496 Sound Effects has nearly two hours of domestic ambiences, from large gatherings in echoey halls to dry reverb-less outdoor chatter. In this collection you will find atmospheres from coffee shops, museums, parks, libraries, restaurant, schools, malls and more, and it contains several recordings of children playing and talking to their parents. Plus, most conversations are unintelligible and will not distract from your characters. For a range of scenarios and locations that will ensure you find a convincing pad for your scene, check out 'Ambience Crowds 2'.
'Jackhammer' by redSonic is a sound pack that features these powerful construction tools from different perspectives. It has five recordings of a jackhammer drilling concrete: one is nearby, another is in a underground parking lot, and three are separated by a wall as the hammer pummels at different speeds. Though this is a small collection, these sounds can be used as-is or easily layered in your soundscape. Plus, their lush reverb may inspire creative sound design. For the heavy pounding of a demolition hammer, here's 'Jackhammer'.
'Analogue Rotary Telephone' by redSonic features sounds of a technology whose semiology was passed onto the digital age. This library dissects a rotary phone for all its vibrations, which are captured by a shotgun mic and a contact mic. You can find sounds of Foley such as dialing, picking up, hanging up, and dropping the phone, and the expected sounds of ringing; however, in this collection, the phone was disassembled so you get each sound as clean as possible. 'Analogue Rotary Telephone' gives you the sounds of the technology that brought us to our modern social era.
'Urban Berlin Vol. 2' by creativeaudiopoolberlin is the team's next addition in recording the sounds of this German capital. Recorded in the Kreuzberg, Mitte, Charlottenburg and Tiergarten districts, this library features quintessentially urban German sounds with busy biergartens, traffic, Deutsche walla, shopping malls, train stations, antique art markets, playgrounds, landmarks, and tourist spots in the heart of the city. The nearly 7 hours of ambiences in this library also come in MS and stereo formats. If you're looking for ambiences from one of the greatest cities in the world, 'Urban Berlin Vol. 2' is worth a listen.
'Shred It' by Jeremy Zussman gets you up-close and personal with a paper shredder and all its functions. It features sounds of the motor as the paper goes through in various ways and Foley of paper ripping, tearing and crumpling. This pack of 50 sounds will also not only save you when you need to design this literal scenario, their high quality allows them to be stretched into larger motors and more. If you're looking for sounds of a task that no one hopes is a major part of their first job, here's 'Shred It'.
What are the chances - two rotary phone libraries in one week! 'Dial It Collection' by Jeremy Zussman is a sound library of this old-fashioned device from a time when you hoped your best friend's phone number wasn't 399-9999. With 78 sounds of picking up the phone, slamming it, detaching the cable, dialing at multiple speeds, pressing buttons and more, this library features the range of rotary phone noises. Plus, the metadata gives specific information such as recording distances, numbers dialed and even fingers used. For the sounds of pulse dialing at its finest, check out 'Dial It Collection'.
