It’s called the “drone of dread”. Film composers, as well as sound designers, mixers and editors, create this sustained sound to set the mood for a scene, and even an entire film, that is, a sense of impending doom.
This week Quartz News talks to some of these noise experts to find out why the drone noise is so effective, and how it is seeping into our everyday lives.
