Realism and presence remains the starting point and guiding principle of my aesthetic. A natural sound is never isolated — there are always ambient sounds coming from all directions. This is an important part of what makes sound feel real. Equally important are the acoustic environment and surroundings of the sound event: natural reflections, echoes and reverberation all contribute to the immersive experience. Spatial cues are abundant, and critical to how our brains interpret sound and place us within an environment. For many of my recordings I use MASS, a multichannel ambient recording system that I have developed specifically to capture these spatial relationships and the acoustic character of an environment. The aim is to capture not only the sounds of a place, but the acoustic presence that surrounds them — creating a sense of immersion and an emotional experience of being there.
