This week on A Sound Effect, we have ambiences and weather effects from chilly Finland, rainy Oregon, bustling Melbourne, and places not of this world. You can hear urban rain in London, chirping meadows and windy forests in the Pacific Northwest, urban soundscapes from one of Australia’s favorite cities, and designed ambiences for extraterrestrial locations. You can also hear sounds of snow and ice impacts, clever drones created from glass and metal, smoldering lava, and lots of kitchen sounds. Happy listening!
Urban Rain

  • Weather Sound Effects Urban Rain Play Track 50 sounds included, 200 mins total $35

Urban Rain is a sound library that delivers 50 city rain sounds recorded in 96 kHz/24 bit, with Soundminer and BWAV embedded metadata. The library contains various types of rain at different intensities, from very light to downpour. Several thunder claps and rumbles are present as well. Locations are as follows: a terrace, a balcony, a backyard, several streets, a rooftop, a garage, inside a car, a loft (from inside), Chelsea FC Stadium and two patios (interior). All files have been recorded at night so human activity is minimum, although you will hear a tiny bit of traffic rumble in the background.

The library also includes 8 Ambisonics files (B-Format, both in FuMa and ambiX, along with a downmix in stereo) and other sounds related to water in the citylife, such as pipes, a drain and a gutter, which are loopable. By using the free SoundField SurroundZone 2 plugin you can convert the B-format files into your preferred format (stereo, 5.0, 5.1, 7.1).

Descriptive markers have been added to several files to highlight interesting events in an otherwise featureless waveform. These markers can be read in programs such as Izotope RX, Reaper, and Soundminer. The markers are also included as .txt files in separate folder.

The total length of the library is 200 minutes.

Gear used: Zoom F8, Sennheiser Ambeo, Sony D100.

UCS compliant metadata. Fields included CatID, Category, Subcategory, FX Name, Filename, Description, BWDescription, Library, RecType, RecMedium, Microphone, Designer, Manufacturer, Keywords.

Lava from the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii

There are few natural occurrences that are cooler than lava (petrified trees, natural pillars, and the Northern Lights are in the running), but did you know the sound of lava is just as cool? 'Lava from the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii' by Discover Oregon gets you 15 minutes of molten rock recordings from the world's most active volcano. You can hear it slowly burn like a campfire with low pops and snaps that sound almost frozen. Whether you're going for Nat Geo accuracy or you want ASMR-like crackling, give this demo a listen.

Glass & Metal Clouds

  • Glass and Metal Clouds are the result of experimenting with the tonal and noise elements of a glass or metal impact via granular processing. Various household objects were struck and recorded, ranging from metal shovels, desk legs and brass ornaments to glass and crystal objects – basically anything that would ring after it was struck.

The recordings were then sent through ‘Clouds’ and processed with gentle, chaotic modulation by a combination of sloth chaos modules and standard cyclic modulation resulting in drones that gently sweep between musical tonal sounds and the random noise produced by the strike and are ever evolving; some more than others.

Sometimes some surprising sounds came out of the drones and I let them run, some were kept quite constant with only a subtle amount of modulation so there is a lot of variation in the pack.
The sounds came from my need as a sound designer to embed strange mood, emotion and feeling of uncertainty into everyday ambience.

'Glass & Metal Clouds' by MWFX is a collection of shining, gentle atmospheres that were created with cyclic modulation and granular processing. Using the tones and noises from glass and metal impacts, this library gives you breath-taking washes that can add fantasy, unease, and spiritual repetition to anywhere you see fit. With over 260 evolving drones that last from 2 to 7 minutes, you'll get not only interesting sounds but also a look at the exquisite taste and vision of the sound designer.

  • Animal Sound Effects Forests and Mountains Play Track 96+ sounds included, 220 mins total $110

Forest and Mountains features nature and wildlife sounds from California, Washington, and Oregon.  Included are a number of bird recordings and forest ambiences, along with some insects, winds, rivers, and rain.

These were recorded over the past three years in various forests, foothills, and mountain environments.   A lot of these took place in or near Southern California’s Angeles Forest and San Gabriel Mountains, an area that spans 1200 Square Miles and varies vastly in terrain.

Also included are some sounds from Northern California, along with recordings from the Pacific Northwest.

The recording techniques for this varied as sometimes I went with the recorders running unattended to capture night, dawn and early morning.  Other times I’d record while being close by.

Working as a Sound Effects Editor I’ve curated this collection with Editors in mind.  Background Ambiences and Spotted FX can really bring a location to life and give it so much story and character and that was a lot of the inspiration behind putting this all together.

    Forests and Mountains

    The Locations

California (61 Files) – This is where a majority of the sounds from this library were recorded and specifically Southern California.  Variety of areas and different environments, mostly around Angeles Forest, from Lower Elevation Foothills to more rugged mid-elevation Mountain Canyons and then much Higher Elevation and more remote terrain.  Also included are a few recordings from the Eastern Sierras and Northern California.

Washington (19 Files) – Southern WA in Gifford Pinchot Forest and various Northwest Forest areas near Puget Sound.

Oregon (16 Files) – Lakeside Recordings in forest and marsh at Klamath Lake in SE Oregon.

    The Birds

Prominent / Specific Birds (36) (Closer Mic Perspective and more detailed) (* denotes multiple versions)

Acorn Woodpecker, American Coot, California Quail, California Towhee, Cassin’s Finch, Fox Sparrow, Great Horned Owl, Hose Wren, Mallard, Mountain Chickadee, Northern Flicker, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Oak Titmouse, Pied-billed Grebe, Common Poorwill, Raven, Red-tailed Hawk, Spotted Towhee, Steller’s Jay, Western Tanager, Western Wood-Pewee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Wilson’s Warbler, Wrentit, Yellow-throated Blackbird, Zone-tailed Hawk

General Forest (9) – A mix of some wildlife (Chipmunk, Deer, Bullfrogs), and more general lighter forest ambiences.
Insects (7) – Crickets from various perspectives and different forests along with some Grasshoppers.
Rain (4) Light to heavier in a canyon with dense vegetation, some with distant birds.
Rivers (5) Smaller detailed creeks to faster moving rivers.
Wind (11)  A mix of calm to heavier with gusts, vegetation, and tree creaks.
    Metadata
Detailed with descriptions and markers and photos to easily navigate and allow for options when searching.  UCS was used to categorize and various bird species are identified.  I’ve also labeled the metadata with what I consider Lower Elevation (up to 1500 feet), Middle Elevation (2000-5000 feet), and Higher Elevation (above 5000 feet).   Included are the season of the year which was mostly Spring and Summer.  Using Open-Tier in Soundminer you can use these to help get a bit more specific to particular environments.
