Tonebenders Podcast โ€“ 260 โ€“ Sound Design For Westerns: Bass Reeves:

For many people that work in sound design, their dream job would be to work on a western. There are the guns, the horses, the creaky floors, and most of all the dusty wide open spaces.ย  They all provide a great playground to create compelling sound, to support the stories of lawmen and the outlaws they seek to bring to justice. So we got the sound team behind the new western series โ€œLawman: Bass Reevesโ€, to take us through how they made this series sound so great. Dialog & Music Re-Recording MIxer Lindsey Alvarez, Effects & Foley Re-Recording Mixer Brad Zoern and Supervising Sound Editor George Haddad, tell us why they love working in this genre.

Dolby Creator Talks โ€“ 194 โ€“ 3 Body Problem โ€“ Adapting the โ€œUnadaptableโ€:

Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff โ€” co-creators of โ€œGame of Thronesโ€ โ€” and Alexander Woo (โ€œTrue Bloodโ€) join us to talk about their epic new science fiction series: โ€œ3 Body Problemโ€ on Netflix. Rounding out the discussion are: Director of Photography Jonathan FreemanSound Designer Paula FairfieldSupervising Sound Editor Tim KimmelEditor Michael Ruscio The show is based on a series of bestselling books by Liu Cixin โ€” which, famously, have been described as โ€œunadaptableโ€ to film & TV, due to the complexities of particle physics, which are at the heart of the premise of the story.

โ€œWeโ€™re not physicists. So we needed to โ€” first and foremost โ€” put it in language that we understood. And luckily, we had a good amount of help doing this. Both the books themselves are written for people who are not scientists, and we had Matt Kenzie, our physics advisor, and Bobak Ferdowsi, our JPL space and rocketry advisor, who helped us translate. We listened to them answer our questions. We listened to them answer the castโ€™s questions. And the way they explain things to people like us gave us a template for the way we could explain things to the people watching. And one thing you do have is you have imagery which can really โ€” even if you donโ€™t entirely understand all the explanation and scientific logic behind what youโ€™re seeing โ€” give you a flavor for what it means and how it feeds into the story that youโ€™re seeing.โ€

To make it, the creative team went through thousands of iterations, executed a covert marketing strategy, and fought through a final debate about a single note.
