The Sound of Spider-Noir
The sound of Spider-Noir blends gritty period character with immersive mixing. Re-recording Mixer/Sound Designer Ryan Collins and Re-recording Mixer Nick Offord explore vintage dialogue treatments, atmospheric transitions, distinctive web effects, and inventive sonic details — including a unique sound for Spider-Sense — to create a fresh sonic identity for this new take on Spider-Man.
The team also created a unique sonic identity for Spider-Man’s web powers, deliberately moving away from the familiar sound of previous Spider-Man films. Ben Reilly’s suppressed abilities inspired a drier, more cobweb-like sound incorporating textures reminiscent of bone creaks, while old magnetic film stock was manipulated to create the distinctive trailing sound of the web.
Electricity was another opportunity for experimentation, combining synthetic sounds with organic details to give the power surges weight and scale while maintaining the show’s period character. Even small sounds were carefully crafted, including a skincare wand recording that became the foundation for subtle electrical movements.
It’s a fascinating look at how Collins, Offord, and the wider sound team used experimentation, collaboration, and immersive mixing to give Spider-Noir a sonic identity all its own — all within the intense challenge of a five-day final mix.

376 – Live From SoundDay LA: The Pitt, DTF St Louis & Hacks
In the final episode of the talks from SoundDay LA, we have the HBO Panel of Emmy nominated re-recording mixers from The Pitt, DTF St Louis & Hacks. James Parnell, Todd Grace & Ed Carr join Tim, for a lively talk in front of a packed house at Glen Glenn Film Center in Hollywood, California. They discuss their approaches to long “oners” and the detailed panning they need, pushing backgrounds and ambiences as much as they can without crowding dialog, and how far is too far with the sounds of medical procedures.
This episode is hosted by Timothy Muirhead.

Jazz Composition, Game Audio, & Working at Valve with Tim Larkin
My guest today is Tim Larkin, who’s based out of Spokane Washington. Tim has been playing trumpet and piano since a young age, and has performed with artists like James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Sheila E, and many others. Tim has also worked in game audio for over 30 years, including 21 years at Valve Software working on titles like Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Half Life 2: Episode One and Two, Portal 1 and 2, Artifact, Dota 2, Riven, and Myst V, and many others.
In this interview, we dive into how Tim got his first game audio job from calling the company Broderbund in the phonebook yellow pages, how he transitioned from being a gigging trumpet player into a video game composer and sound designer, how up and coming composers/sound designers can stand out in a wildly competitive field, the release of his recent jazz album Setting Standards, and so much more.
