Product Description

Toyota Auris Touring Hybrid 1.8 โ€” Collection Notes

50 files ยท 1h 09m 20s ยท 96kHz / 24bit

Recorded in a controlled outdoor environment using a Sound Devices 633 as the main recorder. The microphone rig follows the same multi-perspective approach as the previous sessions : a KMr81 cardioid fixed at the rear of the vehicle, a KM140/KM120 mid-side pair decoded to stereo on a boom pole for tracking, and an ORTF stereo pair at 15 metres for distant perspectives. All exterior takes with movement are delivered as linked pairs โ€” the ORTF distant file and the fixed KMr81/tracked MS file correspond to the same vehicle pass and are designed to be cut together. Interior surround sessions used the double MS rig (KM140-120-140) decoded to 5.0. Drivetrain recordings used a pair of AKG C417lavaliers placed on the wheel arch (left channel) and engine block (right channel) โ€” a deliberate choice on this hybrid model, where the exhaust is largely inaudible at low speed and tyre/suspension noise becomes the dominant mechanical source. Interior detail recordings were captured with the KM140/KM120 coded MS pair (M+S, non-decoded).

The Auris Touring Hybrid 1.8 is a full hybrid estate from Toyota, combining a 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor via the e-CVT drive system. Its sound world is the most unusual in this collection : at low speeds the vehicle operates on electric power alone, producing virtually no engine sound โ€” only tyre noise and a faint electric motor whir. As speed and load increase, the petrol engine cuts in seamlessly, creating a constantly shifting sonic landscape that oscillates between near-silence and a conventional combustion drone. This hybrid character makes it a particularly rich and versatile source for contemporary scene-setting, electric vehicle sound design and dramatic contrast editing.

The collection covers :

  • Pass-bys, departures and arrivals โ€” all captured as linked pairs (ORTF distant + fixed KMr81/tracked MS stereo). Includes a slow electric-only pass-by, a parking radar reverse maneuver sequence, and a complex maneuvering/start/pass-by take. Speeds from slow to fast.
  • Interior driving in 5.0 surround โ€” five sustained driving sessions covering slow town speed, normal town speed, open road at normal speed, fast speed and sport speed, all recorded with the double MS rig. The hybrid systemโ€™s continuous electric-to-petrol transitions are fully audible throughout, creating a dynamic and evolving interior ambience.
  • Drivetrain recordings โ€” AKG C417 lavalier pair on wheel arch and engine, delivering close mechanical texture across all driving contexts : town, road, fast, sport and reverse. The wheel arch placement reveals a rich blend of tyre, suspension and road surface detail absent from conventional exhaust-mounted rigs.
  • Interior details (MS coded) โ€” electric windows front and rear, ceiling roller blind, turn signal switch, handbrake, seatbelt, front and rear interior doors, interior fan and air conditioning at various speeds.
  • Exterior details โ€” front and rear doors, boot/trunk, front door with compressor sound.
  • Hybrid-specific sounds โ€” the distinctive Toyota hybrid power-on chime sequence, capturing the unique electronic ready-to-drive signal that immediately identifies this vehicle in any editorial context.
