Recorded in a controlled outdoor environment using a Sound Devices 633 as the main recorder. The microphone rig was built around the Neumann KM series : a KMr81 cardioid as a dedicated rear/exhaust fixed close microphone, a KM140/KM120 mid-side pair decoded to stereo and mounted on a boom pole for front tracking perspectives, and the same KM140/KM120 capsules reconfigured as an ORTF pair for distant pass-by captures at 15 metres. Interior surround recordings used a double MS rig (KM140-120-140) decoded to 5.0. Close-up engine and exhaust tracks were captured with a pair of AKG C417 lavalier microphones mounted directly on the exhaust pipe (left channel) and engine block (right channel).
The Laguna III 2.0 dCi is a French executive diesel saloon with a characterful common-rail four-cylinder engine. Its sound signature combines a deep, slightly mechanical diesel clatter at low revs with a smooth, refined tone at cruising speeds — making it a versatile source for both realistic sound design and dramatic layering.
The collection covers :
- Engine on/off sequences — cold start, idle and shutdown, captured simultaneously from the rear (KMr81, fixed mono) and from the front (MS pair on boom, stereo), offering two complementary perspectives of the same take.
- Pass-bys, departures and arrivals — these are linked recordings of the same vehicle movement, captured simultaneously from two positions : a distant ORTF pair at 15 metres for the wide, spatial perspective, and a fixed KMr81 with boom-tracked MS stereo close to the vehicle for the tight, immediate perspective. Each take therefore yields two files that are designed to be cut together, offering maximum flexibility in editing. Four speeds are covered : slow, normal, fast and very fast.
- Reverse manoeuvres — start and reverse at slow and normal speeds, stereo MS pair.
- Interior driving in 5.0 surround — three sustained driving sessions at slow, normal and fast speeds, recorded with the double MS rig. Rich, enveloping cabin perspective with road noise, engine transmission and suspension detail.
- Close drivetrain recordings — two AKG C417 lavaliers mounted on exhaust and engine, delivering a raw, mechanically textured stereo source ideal for design layering.
- Interior details — electric windows (left, right, both sides), front and rear doors, hatchback, central locking and turn signal switch, all recorded from inside the cabin.
