Recorded in a controlled outdoor environment using a Sound Devices 633 as the main recorder. The microphone approach differs slightly from the car sessions : the KM140/KM120 mid-side pair decoded to stereo was used in a fixed position for all arrival, departure and pass-by recordings โ rather than boom-mounted and tracking as in the vehicle sessions. This deliberate choice reflects the more compact and agile nature of the subject : the scooter moves through the stereo field naturally without requiring active mic tracking. A KMr81 cardioid was positioned close to the rear of the vehicle as a fixed mono complement on selected takes. Drivetrain recordings used a pair of AKG C417 lavalier microphones mounted directly on the rear exhaust (left channel) and engine block (right channel).
The Vespa GTS 125 is an iconic Italian urban scooter powered by a single-cylinder four-stroke 125cc engine with CVT automatic transmission. Its sound world is entirely distinct from the car collections : a light, airy idle with a slight mechanical tick, a busy high-frequency whine from the CVT as speed builds, and a surprisingly energetic exhaust note when pushed hard. The absence of gear changes gives this scooter a uniquely fluid, continuous sonic arc from standstill to full speed.
The collection covers :
- Pass-bys, departures and arrivals โ captured with the fixed MS stereo pair at three speeds (slow, normal, fast), with the vehicle moving through the stereo field organically. Includes a Doppler horn pass-by and a complex sequence combining a fast horn pass-by, an approach at slow speed and a shutdown with maneuver.
- Engine on/off sequences and idle โ cold start and idle, including an unstable idle leading to stall and a clean stall take. A starter-motor-only sequence (no ignition catch) is also included โ a useful and often difficult-to-find mechanical sound.
- Drivetrain recordings โ AKG C417 lavalier pair capturing sustained riding textures in town at slow speed, on open road at normal and fast speeds, and at medium speed. The CVT-driven engine character is clearly present in all takes.
- Stationary sequences โ engine off, scooter standing still on and off road, with a maneuver sequence on foot capturing tyre scrape and chassis flex.
- Side stand โ deployment and retraction of the kickstand, a clean and distinctive transient.
- Engine cooling โ post-shutdown thermal ticking and metal contraction of the single-cylinder block, recorded close to the engine. An atmospheric and often overlooked sound, useful for post-action ambience.
- Accessories โ double horn, turn signal switch, all captured close to the handlebar controls.
