Product Description
Forbidden Tonalities – Vintage Cybernetic Circuits. This library recreates the sound of the first fully electronic film score: living, unstable vacuum-tube circuits recorded and transformed on tape, inspired by the way Louis and Bebe Barron created the “electronic tonalities” for the 1956 sci-fi classic. Every sound in the library is born from a simulated cybernetic circuit that warms up, finds its balance, chokes, mutates and dies, and is then shaped with the studio tools of the 1950s: ring modulator, capstan varispeed, reversed tape, splices and loops, tape echo, spring reverb and the echo chamber.
Standard is the sound design kit: 1864 original sounds, from flying saucers, ray guns, robots and invisible monsters to alarms, explosions, radio signals and alien skies, plus a family of short abstract signals for interfaces and accents. Deluxe adds the musical side: pulses in tempo and in key, transitions on the bar, ready-made ambience suites and machines in self-oscillation, 2396 sounds in total. For retro sci-fi, period drama, games, trailers and experimental music.
Two editions
- Standard (1864 sounds • 165 files • 24 Bit / 96 kHz • 5.17 GB • Includes metadata): EFFECTS, the designed sounds in UCS folders, with ambiences as four seamless 60-second loops per file (1584 sounds), and SIGNALS, short abstract one-shots from the same circuits (280 sounds).
- Deluxe (2396 sounds • 234 files • 24 Bit / 96 kHz • 8.76 GB • Includes metadata): everything in Standard, plus the musical side. PULSES, mechanical loops and figures in all 12 keys at 90, 100 and 120 BPM (252 sounds). FEEDBACK MACHINES, tape echoes, springs and ring modulators driven into self-oscillation and played by hand (80 sounds). SUITES, composed ambiences as seamless 120-second loops (12 sounds). TRANSITIONS, risers exactly on the bar and swells in key (104 sounds). MOTIFS, themes, phrases, melodic loops and bells (84 sounds).
- Cybernetic Circuits, Not Oscillators: van der Pol tube oscillators with grid-leak feedback, coupled tubes that beat and fight, chaotic Duffing circuits and networks of relaxation “nerve cells”. The timbre emerges from the circuit’s behaviour, sample by sample.
- The Tape Machine as an Instrument: capstan varispeed and Doppler, reversed reels, splices, polyrhythmic tape loops, multi-generation bounces, tape echo with real decaying repeats.
- Period-Correct Processing: diode ring modulator, resonant tube filters, RC-network envelopes, spring reverb and stone echo chamber.
- Synthesised at 96 kHz: the circuits run at 192 kHz internally, so the content above 20 kHz is real signal, not noise: pitch it down an octave or two and it stays full.
- Variations in Every File: up to 16 variations of the same gesture in one file, separated by one second of silence and marked with cue markers. No duplicated material between files or editions.
- Seamless Loops: 12 alien ambiences with four 60-second loops each, every loop at its own tape speed and timbre; 20 files loop in total, all built to cycle without a seam.
- Function-Based Channel Format: 111 mono spot effects ready for panning; backgrounds, drones, risers, stingers and whooshes in mono-compatible stereo.
- Broadcast Loudness: every variation normalized to -23 LUFS integrated (EBU R128) with a -1 dBTP ceiling; short one-shots are measured over their whole length, and dense clicks sit a few dB lower so they match by ear.
- UCS Metadata: UCS file names and Broadcast Wave metadata (bext and iXML) with a creative description and the synthesis techniques used for every sound, ready for Soundminer, Soundly and your DAW.
