Citroën C4 Phase 2 1.6 HDi — Collection Notes
49 files · 1h 08m 26s · 96kHz / 24bit
Recorded in a controlled outdoor environment using a Sound Devices 633 as the main recorder. The microphone rig mirrors the approach used on the Laguna and Touran sessions : a KMr81 cardioid fixed at the rear of the vehicle, a KM140/KM120 mid-side pair decoded to stereo and mounted on a boom pole for tracking, and an ORTF stereo pairset at 15 metres for distant perspectives. Drivetrain recordings used a pair of AKG C417 lavalier microphones placed on the exhaust pipe (left channel) and engine block (right channel). Interior sessions were captured with the KM140/KM120 MS pair placed inside the cabin.
The C4 II is a French compact hatchback powered by a 1.6-litre HDi common-rail diesel. Its sound signature is distinctly European diesel — a crisp, rattling idle that smooths out on the move, with a pronounced injection click at low revs and a surprisingly energetic mid-range growl when pushed. The car’s rigid body structure and relatively tight cabin insulation give interior recordings a focused, dry character.
The collection covers :
- Engine on/off sequences — start, idle and shutdown captured from two positions : a fixed KMr81 close to the rear of the vehicle, and an ORTF pair in the car park for a wider, more ambient perspective. Each take yields two complementary files for flexible editing.
- Pass-bys, departures and arrivals — the same linked dual-capture approach as the previous sessions : ORTF at 15 metres for the spatial perspective and fixed KMr81 with boom-tracked MS stereo for the close, immediate perspective. Speeds covered range from slow to sport, including constant cruising speed variants.
- Reverse and U-turn manoeuvres — start, reverse and return sequences captured with the close rig.
- Interior driving — sustained driving sessions at various speeds, captured in three distinct configurations : with the driver-side window open for an exterior bleed perspective, in fully closed cabin mode for pure interior ambience, and with the AKG C417 lavalier pair on exhaust and engine for a raw drivetrain texture. Town and road contexts are both represented.
- Interior details — electric windows (front and rear, with a close-up rear variant), panoramic sunroof (open and close), front and rear interior doors, seatbelt, turn signal switch.
- Exterior details — front and rear doors, hatchback, central locking combined with electric rear-view mirror folding.
