This week at A Sound Effect, we have so many new libraries we’ve had to release a bi-weekly roundup! In this recap, you’ll hear sounds of the buttons and switches from a retired flight simulator, lots of buzzing mopeds, detailed boot and sneaker footsteps on concrete, tense bowed cymbal effects, rocky debris and rolling stones, zipping Formula 1 cars, explosive howitzers, an eclectic silenced gun library, and peaceful nature ambiences from the Black Forest. There is a little bit of everything this week, so enjoy your discoveries!
Flight Simulator

  • Get the sounds of switches, buttons, knobs and handles – recorded inside an old, retired flight simulator donated to the Danish Technical Museum.

This machine used to make aspiring pilots sweat in their seats, putting them through all sorts of mechanical failures, emergency landings, and just plain flying.

There is basically a switch, button, knob or handle to start every single possible emergency situation a pilot and crew may encounter when flying.

When the sound recording started, some of them were partly broken, and others missing, some did not turn or switch, but most of them were still there and worked beautifully. The variety is surprisingly great, and very different from today's modern switch sounds.

91 tracks, recorded with a Sennheiser 416 onto a Sounddevices 702, all tracks Metadata tagged.

'Flight Simulator' by SonicSalute gets you inside a retired flight simulator at the Danish Technical Museum. How cool is that? This machine has switches, buttons, knobs, and handles galore to put training pilots to the test in their flying and troubleshooting skills. You'll get all sorts of sounds in this library including the device's throttle, radio, compass, rudder, fuel handle, and much more. For a wide variety of mechanical button and switch sounds, this library is a great value!

Mopeds

  • The Mopeds SFX library delivers the sounds of no less than 7 different mopeds. Created in a collaboration between Sonicsalute, sound designer Rune Palving (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 1864, and Tordenskjold), and sound designer Peter Albrechtsen (Antichrist, The Queen of Versailles, and The Idealist).

The included mopeds range from new and non-modified models, to many characteristic-sounding (old and wrecked) models – as well as one heavily-tuned moped.

    The Mopeds library contains:

    Onboard driving and maneuvering (long onboard drives) • Ambiences • Passbys • Circles • Incoming/aways • Start/stop • Revs • Horns • Fuel covers

'Mopeds' by SonicSalute, and sound designers Rune Palving and Peter Albrechtsen, features 7 mopeds that range from new to run down. These 50cc scooters are captured as they pass by, circle, start up, stop, rev, and honk their horns. Plus, 4 of the mopeds were recorded with onboard mics on their exhaust and motor and with a mono or MS boom mic, giving you the option for easy perspective changes! For a more detailed listen of these multi-channel recordings, check out the demo video.

Concrete Foot Work

  • ‘Concrete Foot Work’ by Badlands Sound includes 274 high-quality footsteps perfect for your projects.

The library features five different types of shoes; Boots, Heels or Dress Shoes, Leather Smart Shoes, Old Shoes, and Trainers on three different surfaces – Concrete, Gritty Concrete, and Wet Concrete.

'Concrete Foot Work' by Badlands Sound is a focused library that gives you a wide variety of footsteps from the same palette. With over 270 sounds, you'll hear steps from boots, heels, dress shoes, leather shoes and more on surfaces of dry, wet and gritty concrete. And these footsteps were performed as walking, landing, scrapes, scuffs, stomps, and running, giving you all the sounds you need for your interactive character or film scene. If you need footsteps fast, check this library out.

The sounds range from the haunting and the subtle, to the distorted ear bleeder and everything in between. The WAV files can be used on their own, or manipulated in any way. The Kontakt Instruments are all unlocked and fully editable, making the possibilities of different versions of the files infinite.

Sounds of Nature: FORESTS of Europe

  • Sounds of Nature: FORESTS of Europe features nature sounds and ambiences, captured in different forests of Central Europe at different times of day and at night.

It includes recordings in deciduous forests, pine tree forests and mixed forests. These forests are among the oldest, quietest and most beautiful pristine forests in Europe. You can hear many different birds, including cuckoos, owls and woodpeckers. All nature recordings are clear and completely free from external noise and other human disruptions. This is why this library will be especially useful for productions taking place in the past, like medieval and ancient times. As well as historical and nature documentaries.

All of these nature ambiences are recorded using three different microphone set-ups. A Stereo set-up, a wide stereo set-up and a spaced omnis set-up, which also offers extended frequency response. This brings you 3 variations of each recording. Within these variations the differences are sometimes subtle and sometimes more extreme. These three perspectives can provide flexibility for crosscutting within scenes.

Get more than 5 hours of unique, royalty-free and especially high quality recordings with this library.

Recorded in 24 bit / 96 kHz. Accurately edited and mastered to sound as natural as possible. The average length of each file is between 3-5 minutes, so enough time to use in longer scenes without looping.

For more detailed descriptions about the ambiences in this collection see the metadata in our file lists or listen to the preview montage.

  • Animal Sound Effects Forests and Mountains Play Track 96+ sounds included, 220 mins total $110

Forest and Mountains features nature and wildlife sounds from California, Washington, and Oregon.  Included are a number of bird recordings and forest ambiences, along with some insects, winds, rivers, and rain.

These were recorded over the past three years in various forests, foothills, and mountain environments.   A lot of these took place in or near Southern California’s Angeles Forest and San Gabriel Mountains, an area that spans 1200 Square Miles and varies vastly in terrain.

Also included are some sounds from Northern California, along with recordings from the Pacific Northwest.

The recording techniques for this varied as sometimes I went with the recorders running unattended to capture night, dawn and early morning.  Other times I’d record while being close by.

Working as a Sound Effects Editor I’ve curated this collection with Editors in mind.  Background Ambiences and Spotted FX can really bring a location to life and give it so much story and character and that was a lot of the inspiration behind putting this all together.

    Forests and Mountains

    The Locations

California (61 Files) – This is where a majority of the sounds from this library were recorded and specifically Southern California.  Variety of areas and different environments, mostly around Angeles Forest, from Lower Elevation Foothills to more rugged mid-elevation Mountain Canyons and then much Higher Elevation and more remote terrain.  Also included are a few recordings from the Eastern Sierras and Northern California.

Washington (19 Files) – Southern WA in Gifford Pinchot Forest and various Northwest Forest areas near Puget Sound.

Oregon (16 Files) – Lakeside Recordings in forest and marsh at Klamath Lake in SE Oregon.

    The Birds

Prominent / Specific Birds (36) (Closer Mic Perspective and more detailed) (* denotes multiple versions)

Other Birds Featured (17) (Mixed together from various perspectives, calm to busy depending on time of day, and then closer to more medium and distant sounds.)

Acorn Woodpecker, American Coot, California Quail, California Towhee, Cassin’s Finch, Fox Sparrow, Great Horned Owl, Hose Wren, Mallard, Mountain Chickadee, Northern Flicker, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Oak Titmouse, Pied-billed Grebe, Common Poorwill, Raven, Red-tailed Hawk, Spotted Towhee, Steller’s Jay, Western Tanager, Western Wood-Pewee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Wilson’s Warbler, Wrentit, Yellow-throated Blackbird, Zone-tailed Hawk

General Forest (9) – A mix of some wildlife (Chipmunk, Deer, Bullfrogs), and more general lighter forest ambiences.
Insects (7) – Crickets from various perspectives and different forests along with some Grasshoppers.
Rain (4) Light to heavier in a canyon with dense vegetation, some with distant birds.
Rivers (5) Smaller detailed creeks to faster moving rivers.
Wind (11)  A mix of calm to heavier with gusts, vegetation, and tree creaks.
    Metadata
Detailed with descriptions and markers and photos to easily navigate and allow for options when searching.  UCS was used to categorize and various bird species are identified.  I’ve also labeled the metadata with what I consider Lower Elevation (up to 1500 feet), Middle Elevation (2000-5000 feet), and Higher Elevation (above 5000 feet).   Included are the season of the year which was mostly Spring and Summer.  Using Open-Tier in Soundminer you can use these to help get a bit more specific to particular environments.

    2. The sounds are in 44.1Khz/16 bit format. I have the original files at 96khz/24bit also, if you need this format, please contact me.
