Sky River Sound

I’m James Thatcher and I am passionate about recording and creating unique sounds. I particularly love recording nature ambiences, and have thus far released libraries of natural soundscapes from Death Valley, the Pacific Northwest and also Alaska. Other, non-nature libraries are also available here on A Sound Effect.

  • Animal Sound Effects Death Valley Canyons Play Track 115 sounds included, 150 mins total $65

    What you get:

    • Desert canyon soundscapes from one of earth’s most bizarre and iconic locations
    • Isolated bird calls that have been cleaned to optimize for use as 3D emitters within a game engine
    • Haunting wind tones
    • Comprehensive metadata
    • Universal Category System compliant filenames

    What you don’t get:

    • Human sounds such as tourists, airplanes and vehicles
    • Hard drive bloat from unnecessarily high sample rates or bit depth
    • Heat stroke from trying to record in a harsh environment yourself
  • Your game has cool and unique creatures, why then should you reach for the same walrus and donkey sounds that every other game and movie has already used?

  • Ultrasonic recordings of real firearms because your game doesn’t need to sound like NERF guns.

  • Animal Sound Effects The Oasis at Ash Meadows Play Track 91 sounds included, 367 mins total $65

This library of ambiences from the largest remaining oasis in the Mojave Desert where the highest concentration of endemic species in the United States can be found was recorded in the summer of 2023 during a week when daytime temperatures were breaking 120 degrees Fahrenheit, (49 degrees Celsius) and yet the recordings at each of the three locations are full of wildlife calls attesting to the resilience and adaptability of nature.

Great care and no small amount of time was spent identifying the birds and other wildlife in each recording and the calls have been tagged with metadata markers that appear in Soundminer as well as most DAWs to make it easier to know what you are hearing and when.

  • Augment the spooky bog in your game with real sounds from drop rigs (portable recording setups) left in a wetland in the Pacific Northwest in the winter. Included are ambient sounds of rain and post rain in the wetland, as well as many animals such as Mallard Ducks, Canada Geese, Trumpeter Swans, Coyotes, Great Horned Owls, Wood Ducks and more. Also of particular interest are sounds of waterfowl flapping their wings and splashing in the water. This pack can serve as a great construction kit for creating a colder climate wetland scene in your video game as several iterations of many of the sounds are included so that the player doesn’t hear the same duck sound over and over. Take a listen to the sample sounds and hear the benefit that the sound of nature, unprovoked and uninfluenced by human presence will bring to your game. Full metadata and UCS compliance allow you to find the sounds you need, when you need them.

  • This mini-library is taken from a session recording ducks and geese in the Pacific Northwest during their Fall Migration. Included are sounds of Mallards, Canada Geese, Cackling Geese, along with some Downy Woodpeckers and Pacific Wrens who wanted to join in on the fun.

All files are UCS compliant and have full metadata embedded.

  • A collection of vocalizations and emotes from evil creatures aimed for game audio use.

The library is UCS compliant and includes full metadata to help you find the right sounds with less browsing.

  • In this library you will find recordings made by tracking a herd of wild Roosevelt Elk in the Pacific Northwest and recording them in the fall at the beginning of the “rut” when the males begin competing for attention of the females. Recording this library I quickly found that searching for a single target species to record is quite different than choosing a location and recording whatever happens to be there. New challenges were presented and a great deal of planning went into finding where the herd was likely to be at the time. With a brilliant stroke of luck all that planning paid off on the first attempt!

    Included are 30 sounds of:

    • Bull elk bugling
    • Bull elk sparring and clashing antlers
    • Calves calling

All the recordings were made in the same morning, meaning they can be plugged into the same game with a minimal amount of ambience matching. Note that although I made use of a parabolic mic during the recording, because these are wild animals I kept distance and hid behind a bush, staying out of sight of the elk so as not to disturb them. This introduces some extra “air” or ambience into the recording which I have chosen not to remove in order to preserve the integrity of the sound of the elk and to leave this option for you to decide.

I’ve already done the hard part of finding the elk and recording them for you, now you can focus on the creativity of your project.

  • A short and to the point library of over the top designed sounds that go boom, bang and smack. UCS Compliant.

Here’s a short and to the point library of over the top designed sounds that go boom, bang and smack. Preference was given to style over “realism” and each sound effect includes five variations to make design and implementation for game audio easier. All sounds are designed and stylized, but room was left in the mix for the sounds to be used as components in your own work. Included are fight impacts, stone and metal impacts, explosions and the splat of a skull crushing. This library comes with full metadata and is UCS Compliant.

  • The first pack of designed sound effects from Sky River Sound provides you with over 80 sound effects I’ve created taking inspiration from video games in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres. Types of sounds you’ll find include ranged and melee weapons, magic spells and rituals, vehicles, UI elements and creature sounds. The sound effects were designed to be ready to be used as they are now, but can also easily be used as building elements for further sound design.

Sale Policy: To keep things simple, I never put any of my libraries on sale or offer any kind of discount. I sell them at a reasonable price given the effort to record and compile them, I find this is the most honest and transparent approach to the sale of sound effects.

  • In the heart of the Pacific Northwest, Washington State is full of natural beauty found in many different climate zones all within a day’s drive from Seattle.

  • This library, recorded during a trip to the ominous Death Valley USA in February 2021, features sounds of the harsh desert being carved by winter winds, as well as sounds of life such as wetland birds from the oasis at Ash Meadows. If you listen closely to the recordings from the infamous Devil’s Hole, and inhospitable Salt Creek, you can hear the endangered pupfish bark. Many recording styles were used to capture immersive stereo images of the landscape that provides such stark contrasts being both foreboding and breathtaking in its beauty, included are surround and binaural recordings. This is by no means a comprehensive collection, if anything I learned that I have much more to discover about Death Valley than I thought I did starting out.
