  • Foley 20th Century Cameras Play Track 3900+ sounds included $200 $180

Discover the obscure sounds of 24 film cameras designed between the 1930s and 1970s. Carefully organised into 159 files, the 20th Century Cameras library offers over 3900+ sounds recorded at pristine 24bit/96kHz, thus allowing you to not only use the mechanical sounds of the cameras for their intended purpose, but also for sound design.

In order to help you navigate through the plethora of sounds available, rich SoundMiner metadata has been carefully crafted in order to describe the sounds as simply as possible, using multiple keywords and terms, where needed.

The library contains mostly mechanical sounds, such as the sound of shutter release at different shutter speeds, knobs, latches, wheels, and more, in addition to some Foley sounds as well.  Due to the age of the cameras, most of the shutter release sounds have slight variations between them, even at the same shutter speed.

The library also comes with a free eBook which can be viewed and downloaded here.

In addition to the SoundMiner metadata sheet down below, the eBook provides information as to how older cameras work, and more details as to how each of the cameras recorded for the library work. The book goes into a fair bit of detail as to what sounds each camera offers, without getting too technical.

If you have any questions about this library, feel free to quickly send me an e-mail. I tend to reply within minutes.

  • This library is a collection of a wide variety of sounds recorded with high quality equipment over the past few years.
Most of the sounds are field recordings or otherwise raw without any processing such as noise removal, EQ or compression, but still mostly curated and edited so that it’s fast to start using them in your projects.

To celebrate the end of one era I decided to put together most of my recordings as one library, it’s including recordings with different techniques – from the electromagnetic fields of iPhone and a contact-mic’d sewing machine, to ORTF-stereo atmospheres of greenhouses, and gardens full of crickets recorded in ambisonic, and much more. 45 GB of material should cover your needs for some time :)

I hope it’s useful as a source of ready-to-use sound effects, but also as material and inspiration for something more. High quality and high sample rates allow you to manipulate the sounds a lot without losing their energy. Have fun with the library!

  • Mechanical Elements: Gears Play Track 4000+ sounds included, 205 mins total $75 $65

Elements: Gears is a collection of small and large gear, ratchet, cogwheel and other mechanical sounds recorded and edited over more than 2 years by George Vlad. The library encompasses more than 4000 individual sounds covering actions such as single clicks, slow movement, fast movement, short turns etc. The objects recorded include ratchet tools, plastic toys, old sewing machines, wagon wheels and ethnic noise making instruments. Some of the larger objects have been recorded using MKH 8040, DPA 4060 and a JrF contact microphone with each perspective included on a separate track.

Elements: Gears 1.1 Update adds more large gear sounds! Check out the accompanying spreadsheet.

The sounds can be used for obvious purposes such as ratchet wrenches, cogwheels, drawbridges, steampunk mechanisms, machinery etc.. As is the case with other libraries in the Elements series, these sounds can also be used as building blocks for more complex sounds such as spaceships, vehicles, industrial machinery and others. Additionally, all files are recorded and mastered at 24/96 quality which makes them excellent sound design elements ripe for serious processing.

    Elements: Gears at a glance:

    • 212 .wav files; more than 4000 sounds in total
    • recorded and presented as 24 bit/96 kHz mono files
    • 3 hours and 55 minutes total length
    • 3.83 GB uncompressed size – 3.11 GB zip archive

These small wooden and metal devices give grainy textures to any material + they sound really funny at times, and can be used as sweetener for funny toy sounds. Due to the recordings with a piezzo disc, they have a lot of deep and rumbling content. The other mics were the Neumann TLM 102, The DPA 4060 and the amazing Sennheiser MKH 8040. They all cover different and unique perspectives.

Get more than a thousand zipper sounds in Elements: Zippers – recorded and edited by George Vlad.

The first in the Elements series, the library covers the 3 main types of zippers: coil, plastic and metal. 22 different zippers on 19 objects (backpacks, coats, jeans, toiletry bags, wallets etc.) have been recorded, edited and carefully tagged with metadata. Most of the zippers feature 4 types of performance: slow zips, normal speed zips, fast zips and short fast zips.

The library’s most obvious use is as Foley elements since it covers a wide variety of zipper types and performances. However, some the recordings sound quite unlike actual zippers and more like creatures, gears or even farts! Additionally, all files are recorded and mastered at 24/96 quality which makes them excellent sound design elements ripe for serious processing.

The Wheels & Gears SFX library features a collection of bicycle tire, freewheel, gear and chain recordings. Two bike models were recorded: A Specialized Carve Expert (mountain bike) and a Bianchi Campione (city/road bike).

A wide range of sounds were recorded, from conventional bike sounds (such as freewheel clicks, gear shifting and chain movements, acceleration with various speeds, coasting, and disc brake movements) to more experimental sounds, creating unique sound effects using various found objects on the tires and spokes (such as cardboard, wooden sticks, fabric, shoe soles, guitar picks, and paper).

Recordings were captured with a Sanken CSS-5 Shotgun mic. The shotgun microphone was mounted in a full Rycote windshield kit and connected to a Sound Devices 702 recording at 192khz. The contact mic recordings were captured with the Barcus Berry 4000 Planar Wave system.

  • Get the sounds of a Printrbot 3D printer – with four NEMA 14 stepper motors -, in this interesting SFX library by New Sound Lab.

The high torque motors connected to a pulley system control the X-Y-Z movements of the aluminum extruder and metal print bed. When printing three-dimensional objects, these fast and precise movements result in a unique barrage of percussive and rhythmic mechanical noise.

These sounds were captured using three different recording setups: Barcus Berry contact mics, RF coils, and combined contact mic / RF coil into a Sound Devices 702 recorder.

The resulting sounds are a mix of grainy, gritty atonal patterns, robotic percussive bleeps, glitchy digital beeps/clicks, low fidelity drones, and chaotic noise. Both raw recordings, and processed elements are included and ready for further sound manipulation.

  • Mechanical Floppy Drives Play Track 655 sounds included $45 $30

The Floppy Drives sound effects library features recordings of seven computer disk drives: two 3.5″ floppy drives, one 5.25″ floppy drive, three Zip drives, and one SuperDisk drive.

All drives were taken apart to access and manipulate the stepper/eject motors to create unique sounds. These range from electronic percussive bleeps and glitchy noises, to electromechanical motor movements.

An Arduino UNO microcontroller board was connected to one of the 3.5″ floppy drives, allowing precise control of the drive's stepper motor via custom software code. A midi keyboard was interfaced to the system, giving the ability to control the back-and-forth movement of the read/write heads via notes on the keyboard. This essentially turned the drive into an instrument, producing a new set of sounds not existing in the drive's normal functions.
