A short but insightful observation from film sound legend Randy Thom, on why sound matters. This originally appeared on his blog, and has been republished here with his kind permission.

Very often when I’m complaining about the lowly position of sound in the film universe someone will agree by saying something like “Absolutely……. what would they do without sound? Try looking at the movie without any sound and see how you like it… ”

When I hear that sort of comment I always agree, of course, but I also think… Man, the bar is pretty damn low. It’s like saying to a cinematographer “Visuals are important in a film because without visuals you wouldn’t see anything.”

Yes, it’s important to “have sound,” but that is rarely an issue. Even skinflint producers understand the importance of “having sound.” The real question is WHAT sound there will be, and even more important: Will sound ideas and themes be allowed to influence creative decisions in the other crafts as full collaborators?

Certain combinations of sound and visuals can evoke what neither can do alone.

Sound is important because it can tell us about character, place, and time. It’s important because it informs us and moves us in ways visuals can’t, and because certain combinations of sound and visuals can evoke what neither can do alone. It’s also potentially important because it can help to determine what we see. But why be shy?…. Visuals are sometimes important because they help to determine what we HEAR.

A big thanks to Randy Thom for letting us share this insightful post from his blog here on A Sound Effect!

  • Animals & Creatures Wolves Play Track 500+ sounds included, 78 mins total $79 $63.20

    DESCRIPTION:

The highest quality vocal sounds of the members of a wolves pack in their social interaction. Howls solo and in groups from 2 to 9, fierce growls, extremely bassy grumblings, barks, snorts, whines, yapping. All the raw material was collected using the method of passive week-long observation with minimal intrusion, nothing was staged or provoked. A large part of the library is made of unintentional recordings of the accidental territorial quarrel between a polar wolf SEVER and an alpha male HORT: very aggressive growls, teeth clacking and other fight sounds. Luckily, despite the terrifying sonic impression, no one was injured. About 60 hours of raw recordings were edited into 1 hour 18 minutes, 151 files with 500+ individual sounds. Wolves are very emotional, expressive and surprisingly musical. So, these sounds can be equally useful for films and games representing wolves, as well as for creature and monster sound design. Some of the recordings sound very humanlike.

10% of this library revenue goes to the shelter for wolves.

  • The Crash & Smash sound effects library contains over 1110 sounds of destruction. For this collection I went on a rampage at several junk yards around my hometown, collecting a vast amount of crash sound effects. This one is highly focused more on crashing sounds with all the rumble and debris, giving you hundreds of variations of glass smashes, rolling stones and stone hits, wood breaks and impacts and metal crashes.

As usual the sounds come perfectly cleaned and edited so you can instantly place them in your timeline or design new sounds with it. Of course they also got some EQ and compression treatment but weren’t further “designed”, so you have nice and flexible source material for your own productions.

All sounds come with embedded Soundminer Metadata sorted in subfolders for:• Glass
    • Metal
    • Stone
    • Wood
    • Plastic
