Ever wonder what the story is behind the iconic THX sound? The Twenty Thousand Hertz podcast just published an interesting new interview with Andy Moorer, creator of that sound – hear it below:
Since 1983 one of the most memorable parts of going to the movies has been the THX certification played during the previews. The accompanying sound logo called “The Deep Note” has fascinated, terrified, and mystified audiences for over three decades. What is THX really? How was “The Deep Note” created? And why does it elicit such a reaction from those who hear it? Featuring Andy Moorer, creator of “The Deep Note” and global director of marketing for THX, Rob Cowles. This episode was written & produced by Kevin Edds.

Wind In Broadleaf Trees is a collection of recordings focusing on wind through broadleaf trees. Recorded in a Swedish forest in October it is representative of the most common broadleaf trees in Europe and other areas with a temperate climate.
In this collection I wanted to capture evocative and emotional wind sounds, from the soothing and relaxing soft winds, tense moderate winds, dramatic strong winds and the transitions between the different emotions or speeds of wind.
The collection was recorded at 24 bits 96Khz with an A-B stereo setup. It contains both longer files, with two minutes and more in length and shorter files edited to be a seamless loop. The files also come with embedded metadata.

The Wheels & Gears SFX library features a collection of bicycle tire, freewheel, gear and chain recordings. Two bike models were recorded: A Specialized Carve Expert (mountain bike) and a Bianchi Campione (city/road bike).
A wide range of sounds were recorded, from conventional bike sounds (such as freewheel clicks, gear shifting and chain movements, acceleration with various speeds, coasting, and disc brake movements) to more experimental sounds, creating unique sound effects using various found objects on the tires and spokes (such as cardboard, wooden sticks, fabric, shoe soles, guitar picks, and paper).
Recordings were captured with a Sanken CSS-5 Shotgun mic. The shotgun microphone was mounted in a full Rycote windshield kit and connected to a Sound Devices 702 recording at 192khz. The contact mic recordings were captured with the Barcus Berry 4000 Planar Wave system.

ROOM TONES USA – 3D SURROUND AMBIENCES
Our fourth entry of our famous sound effect series 3D SURROUND is now available: After ROOM TONES EUROPE comes ROOM TONES USA.
As you’d expect from a library labeled “room tones”, the sounds come without much action in the foreground but with a very detailed acoustic image of each room, giving you the perfect basic noise layer to break the silence in your post production project. The recorded rooms vary from hallways and warehouses over cafes, offices, basements, apartment rooms, laundry and boiler rooms to industrial rooms and even an underground bunker. ROOM TONES USA covers all different scenarios you could possibly need, delivered fully surround with unprecedented precision, spatial impression and clarity. Undoubtedly, this can be easily used in stereo productions as well. Either chose the angle yourself or use the stereo version (included in 3D SURROUND).
