Useful Sound Effects

Welcome to Useful Sound Effects, sound libraries that focus on sounds that are meant to be used.

Based on raw recordings, sound-design, field recording, the sound effects are ready to be used, with enough dynamics, and often offered with single elements to add your own touch or needs to complement it. Most sounds have variations for alternating and avoid repetitive effects.

From mono recordings, to binaural recordings, to close-up ultrasound recordings with the Sanken CO-100K, each sound can open new perspectives for use in game, film, documentary etc. Mostly saved as 24 bit 96KHz or 192 KHz files, some raw recording files may be found for further user manipulation.

Have a lot of fun and success with the sounds. Any comments are welcome and if you still think there is something missing, please let me know.

  • 365 Files arranged by type and bpm, these construction kits and individual sounds are ready to be used in any video, movie or game. While having a more scientific character in mind, they can be applied to any theme or subject. Most files are already loopable. Breakdowns are available in separate folders with separate drums, percussion, bass, melody, ambience.
Bonus files include loops with more audio effects, rhythmic variations and more single sounds.

  • Destruction & Impact Sounds Urbex Room Tones Play Track 28+ sounds included, 152 mins total $42

This Collection of Room Tones contains Recordings made in empty, abandoned old Buildings and Medieval Ruins. Unsettling Draft Sounds from different perspectives. Wind Gusts heard from inside, Wind Storm echoing in old Chapels or Church, eerie humming inside abandoned spaces, Tonal Draft creating creepy atmospheres… Over 2,5 hours of Urbex type ambiences, containing long files and loops for easy use and variety. Recorded in stereo inside and outside interesting, and secret places, which is a rule for urban exploring ;-)
These are not common Room Tones with only presence of a silent room, but more ambiences that are suited for games/movie where characters are supposed to be in shelter, in abandoned places, in castles, dungeons, prisons, machine rooms etc. Cracks, moving structures, rattling objects are left in purposely to really have a detailed and convincing setting for game, documentary or any visual content. Best is to keep the volume low enough to not overdo the atmosphere.
Care is taken to not have any disturbing human traffic in the recordings, so these will fit for most time periods and geographic locations.

  • Over 375 sounds of creaking and cracking materials, including breaking cables, ropes under tension and about to split, wires and strings under stress, metal friction causing tension. Recorded with a combination of Sanken CO100K and Nevaton microphones for full frequency sound content. Saved as 192KHz these files allow for high resolution editing. Useful for impact sounds in cinema, games or documentary, but also for cartoon sounds or even creature sounds as many of the recordings contain vowel-like screeching and scraping.

Imagine a scene where a rope is about to break over an edge, an object being torn by a huge cable, a wooden structure about to collapse under stress and so on… Our brain is triggered by those rattling sounds or spine-breaking cracks coming from little fibers being split apart, parts of the structure creaking, wires scraping over edges…

These sounds can be perceived as delicate but have a great psychological impact as we interpret these and know what is about to happen. So suspense is built with both background and close-up sounds. Useful when building tension, when creating a sense of upcoming climax, these sonic elements will work out to amplify the details that are often important but not always visible for the eye.

All the source material and recording are acoustic, there are no digital effects applied. This guarantees natural organic harmonics, even way beyond our hearing. Pitching down the 192 KHz files will let you discover another collection of sounds!

You can find the following libraries in this collection >

  • This Old Object library contains edited and Raw recordings made with Sanken CO100K and Nevaton MC59 microphones for full spectral frequencies up to 70 kHz and beyond. Tortured metal surfaces screeching, old rusty profiles squeaking, dirty and gritty metal surfaces scraping, old wheels spinning and whining, mechanical pieces draining out their last screams… The Raw recordings allow you for more alternative movements, different squeaks, different speeds. All sounds are cleaned up but no effects have been applied so you can use them in any setting you want by adding your own fx.

The ultrasonic content can be used when the sounds are slowed down for eerie and spooky atmospheres. The original recordings can already be a torture to listen to, but why not go to the limits of what can be listened to, the story-line may ask for it.

This library is UCS compliant, has 24 bit 192 kHz sound files.

  • Environments & Ambiences French Provence Culture Play Track 21+ sounds included, 83 mins total $42

The second library of the French Provence has a focus on cultural sounds. It contains sounds related to typical local sounds, such as heard during a game of Pétanque, aka Jeu de boules. Various markets with french people talking (indistinguishable), french children playing on a school court and park.
I f you need to localize a setting in the south of France, these files will help you directly. Recorded at 24bit/96KHz and without annoying traffic sounds, these sounds can cover a large time span.
Recordings took place in cities like Uzès, Baux-de-Provence and some villages in between.
Care has been taken to not make voices recognizable, some people that were recorded more closely agreed on publishing the recording (the petanque game).

All files are UCS compliant. If Loop is mentioned in the file name then this loops seamlessly (all files are at least one minute long, up to 9 minutes)

For nature sounds from the french Provence you can have a look and listen to :

  • This library is built as a sound designer tool set for creating pass-by, drive-by, fly-by or even creature sounds, including 347 files with a 192KHz sample-rate, recorded with the Sanken CO-100K combined with Nevaton MC59 mics to deliver full spectrum content. You can shape and twist these files to fit your needs without losing quality. No synths or real engines were used, only acoustic foley recordings providing a natural doppler effect for life-like filtering.
You can have high screeching sounds to deep rolling boomy engines, scraping gritty whooshes to airy sci-fi sounds.
Needless to say that these pass-by sounds can be the basis of your own sounds and sweeteners, be it vehicles or creatures, cartoon or cinema trailer…

All files are UCS compliant, include Metatags, and are bundled together in small groups that could sonically identify a virtual vehicle, each having multiple variations.

As these are clean raw recordings, no effects have been applied that might limit the use. The focus is on flexibility and varied use.

  • The French Provence Nature sound library offers authentic recordings from the South of France, around Baux de Provence, Uzès, Nîmes and other areas. Of course you will find multiple Cicadas, what the french call “les Cigales”, with their typical sound and local accent!

Also Bird Chorus, Frogs, Summer Bird Songs, Autumn ambiance, abandoned rural village sounds, the famous Mistral wind, Insects flying by and buzzing, Garrigue atmosphere and so on.

Recorded over 2 years and reduced to over 5 hours of selected files, the most suited spots have been used to make clean recordings without annoying traffic. The French Provence Nature library can be used for all time settings and for all media. You can use stereo and binaural recordings.

All files have Meta tags, UCS compliant descriptions that help you find the right sounds.

  • Environments & Ambiences Wind collection – vol 2 Play Track 76 sounds included, 210 mins total $65

Wind collection Vol 2 offers gentle breezes to strong gusts, spooky drafts to rare old bamboo field wind sounds. All files are clean and contain no traffic noise or any other human made annoying sounds. This means the wind sounds can cover many productions including documentary, game sounds, movie background, and for all time periods! From medieval settings to unknown times and places, these wind recordings offer a credible background. During 3 years this collection was growing bit by bit, adding variations and useful situations. The rare presence of insects or birds is mentioned in the metadata, but they apply to less than a handful of files.
The acoustic wind collection covers over 3,5 hours of stereo recordings, binaural recordings for immersive wind sounds, and some mono files for specific use.

When Loop is indicated in the filename, the file can be looped as you would expect, but these files are unlike sample loops, or instrument loops: they are of course longer and loop after a good amount of time, sometimes several minutes. The looped files are chosen by their contents and have no moments that are too recognizable if heard a second time, so they are useful for backgrounds.

All files have UCS compliant names and include metadata with useful descriptions.

You can find a Draft folder with stereo and binaural recordings in interesting abandoned places that had a draft close to a door or window. You might hear some dark reverb or cracks in those places that deliver a great ghostly atmosphere.
The bamboo wind recordings are also very special as these were made in old bamboo fields that were not cleaned. This means there were old and broken parts between the weeping bamboo, assuring nice clunks and squeaks.
Other than that you will find many winds, through air, through vegetation, in empty villages, in a small van for specific perspectives, wind through tunnel, very bad recordings with no wind protection for typical interview fails…

  • Useful Sound Effects releases Earthquakes, a library that contains both stereo and binaural earthquake sound effects. Sounds range from complete mixes that maintain original dynamics, indoor sensations, exterior and underwater settings. Two folders have been added with assets to create or modify your own sounds with rattling metals, shaking objects, falling debris, low rumbles…

Having felt and heard earthquakes, I wanted the sounds to translate this feeling of awkward “calmness”. The seismic effects are often delicate, but nevertheless unexpected.

These are not the Hollywood-style overwhelming crushing sounds but the more mystical, delicate sounds of the earth trembling, shifting tectonic plates, seismic movements, tremors that come from deep inside our planet and that are heard from the exterior or our interior, like houses, office, urbex-type sites.

UCS compliant files with 225 sounds that can be easily edited to fit image or story.
