Rodeos and horse ranches aren't what they used to be.
These days, rodeos are polluted with big PAs pumping rock and pop music through the speakers while the cowboys ride the bulls and buck the broncs. People watch through cell phones and keep a safe distance from the action. Horse ranches are overrun with the sounds of 4 wheelers and dirt bikes on the tracks nearby.
The recordings we have come from before that time.
Years ago we rolled out to the rodeo with full access, a portable DAT machine, and a determination to catch every angle we could take a mic to. The house band played from a balcony unamplified while the cowboys rode the bulls and the crowd cheered. The children rode sheep in a sport called “mutton busting” and the women mounted stagecoaches and raced around the arena at breakneck speed.
…and when the show was over the crowd stood up to leave, but the cowboys were still competing – so they kept riding.
The steer wrestling contest happened in an almost empty arena. We were there — up close, capturing every gate release, the sounds of the cow struggling to stay on his feet, and the single trainer cheering the cowboys on. The dirt and the grit and the steel clacking around were all there, exposed and clean and in their native environment.
After the rodeo we went to a local horse ranch and kept on rolling. We got gallops and canters, grunts and snorts. We handled the tack, shook the bridles, and swung the gates. We recorded in the barn and out on the fields.
These recordings come from a time before 24 bit 96kHz portable rigs existed, but they have a quality and fidelity that has survived the ages. Take a listen and remember the time when these things sounded like they should sound.

This sound pack contains a collection of train sound effects, recorded in Europe & Asia:
Looking for authentic ambient sounds of Japanese transportation? Look no further! Field recordist and composer Ryan Ayers travelled to Japan in April of 2019 and captured this wonderful collection. His journey took him from Osaka to Tokyo to Fukuoka and all points in-between. Travel aboard the trains of the JR, the famous Shinkansen, the Hanyu Ferry and more! Explore the train platforms and station terminals of Osaka. Get lost in the Kansai International Airport. There is a subway noodle shop as well as specialty food markets. Authentic walla and natural activity give this collection the ear candy necessary to be an integral part of great soundscapes.
This is a purely recorded sound pack. Nothing is synthetic or layered here. What you hear is exactly what was captured on location. We edited and mastered the files to bring out the best parts of the recordings. Most of the recordings have been ready-made into loops for ease of use. As always, we have embedded the files with detailed metadata for easy database searches.
A collection of ambiances and street sounds recorded in ukraine between 2015-2018. With these recordings I tried to grasp the unique character of Ukraine. The distinct traffic sounds, the wonderful nature and the lively language.
You will find recordings of airport and train station with p.a announcements, street sounds with Russian walla and voices, quiet residential ambiances, Ukrainian village ambiances, supermarkets and markets, schoolyard, school corridor, parade, street traffic, trains, conversations in Russian, prayers, street player talking, pedestrian areas, and more.
An underground parking is a place where you don’t feel safe. A squeaky door, a car in approach or simply someone playing with keys. Once again you will have a lot of possibility with those surround sounds for creating space and depth.
Looking for that ‘lost world’ outdoor adventure ambience? The Rupununi region has it all: Pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity, and local myths – and this sound effects library captures its ambience.
Uncharted Territories
Virtually untouched by modern human activity, its nature combines a mixture of savannahs, shrubs, wetlands and forests located in South America. The amerindians inhabit the area for millennia and are in total osmose with their surroundings.
Local myths and legends
In fact the region is soaked with legends and myths, like the famed yet unfound El Dorado city claimed by many explorers like sir Walter Raleigh expeditions in 1592.
Rich Wildlife & Biodiversity
Rupununi bolsters evolving serenades of sounds throughout days and nights due to its incredibly lush eco-systems including thousands of bird species, insects, reptiles and mamals.
The library is available in stereo, and surround (Quad & 5.1).
This library delivers 70 recordings, each 5 minutes in length and recorded at 96khz at 5 different universities.
You’ll find find a range of distinctive locations from exterior walkways to interior study spaces, stairwells and many more. Each sound file is contains useful metadata describing the location and distinct sounds present in the recording.
All sounds were recorded using the Sound Devices Mix Pre 6 and a stereo pair of Sennheiser MKH 8020s.

More than just roomtones, this collection is about living in town. Changing an appartment’s common sounds into simple poetry. This collection was recorded in a big city such as Paris and London but also more quiet places.
This is the second part of Urban Housing ambisonics series. Those atmospheres are the most helpful to create an immersive sensation of living in town. Mostly recorded in upper class hotel room from New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Bangkok. Sounds are deep and comfortable – and with an open window, it’s a totally different story.
Urban Winds II gets you 65 minutes (2 GB) of medium and high-wind sounds in 29 separate files – recorded in 24bit/96kHz M/S stereo (decoded to X/Y stereo and mono), using Sennheiser MKH micophones.
You get empty streets and alleys, office exteriors and a marina. You get steel wires that whistle and whip in the wind, pipes and cavities resonating in the gusts. You get ambiances and a few specifics. I have tried to strike the balance between variety and nuance, to give you sound pros something to build a scene around. In that sense, this really is a construction kit of sorts. This collection picks off where Urban Winds left off.
You will hear very little human activity – other than distant traffic. I recorded mostly at night, and in large, undisturbed areas.
In some of the recordings, you will hear wind buffeting – more of the windscreen than the microphones – but there is some. In some cases, I opted to tame the most violent events, but others I left in. In many cases, wind noise reduction simply took away too much of the forcefulness, so I left it as is.
Some specifics appear in both mono and stereo versions, where the stereo version are X/Y derived from the M/S source files and the mono versions are simply the Mid channel. I did this, because most people seem to prefer X/Y files for post-work, rather than M/S – but a down-mix of X/Y to mono would be inferior to using the original Mid-mic signal. All sounds were captured in Aarhus, Denmark.
Air conditioning is almost everywhere – and this collection will give you different sounds of ventilation systems, from from outside and inside units. Smooth hotel room AC, industrial computer room or bathroom, all those kind of rooms need ventilation systems – and here’s what they sound like.
With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.
A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!
We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!
A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!
I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!
A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
