The gathered ambiences form a comprehensive resource of steady winds, heavy gusts, rustling undergrowths as well as single waves and strong surfs that constantly stream and break through these inhospitable areas with concrete remains all around.

African Jungle is a huge collection of unique ambiences recorded in Central Africa’s Congo Basin rainforests. To my knowledge, these are the first surround field recordings made in this area. Last year I spent a whole month off the grid, listening to and recording a variety of habitats at all times of day and night, at the height of the rainy season when birds are most vocal. It took me many days of travel to get to these places, from using trains, boats, cars and planes to hiking on foot in the jungle.

  • Animals & Creatures African Rainforest Play Track 69+ sounds included, 330 mins total From: $95

African Rainforest is an expansive collection of recordings made in the various types of rainforest that lie on the Ugandan side of the Albertine Rift, ranging from high-altitude afromontane to tropical lowland jungles.

From the spooky croaking choruses of black and white colobus monkeys to barking baboons, hooting DeBrazza’s monkeys, moaning Mona monkeys, screaming chimpanzees, warbling mangabey and the otherworldly twang of the blue monkey, these forests are packed to the brim with primates calling from the canopy. Yet beyond all the monkey exuberance, these recordings are characterised by tranquility and spaciousness, where slow lazy bird calls are interspersed by gently fluttering insect choruses and pinging tree frogs.

Available in stereo and surround and covering all times of day, African Rainforest not only features lengthy ambient recordings but also includes a number of close-up vocalisations of two kinds of great ape: chimpanzee and mountain gorilla, recorded on location in their natural habitat.

    Library highlights:

    • 5.5 hours of lush ambiences in surround & stereo
    • 10 primate species
    • 50+ birds
    • Numerous frogs and mammals
    • Bonus recordings of close up chimp & gorilla vocalisations

    RECORDING STORIES:
    • Hear an interview about my Alaskan Expedition on Episode 121 of the Tonebenders Podcast.
    • This library pulls the best quiet nature moments from over 150 hours of recordings in the Alaskan wilderness.
    • For Alaska: Quiet Nature, I focused on two ecosystems: lakeshore and boreal forest
    • The first half of the trip focused on the marshland around beaver ponds and the lakeshore of Lake Clark. These recordings are full of sparse and resonant shorebirds, soothing distant water, and a lone moose tromping through the water right in front of my mics!
    • The second half of the trip was spent in the boreal forest. With the help of my waterproof Cinela Pianissimo blimp (read more about the waterproofing – here) I was able to record continuously for 7 days!
    • The Anker USB-C battery I use to power my MixPre-6 can run 3 channels recording at 192kHz/24-bit for about 18 hours. So, I usually left my mics in the woods from about 5:00 pm until 11:00 am the next day.
    • The next morning, I’d hike out, change SD cards and batteries, and move the mics to the next location I found in my explorations the previous afternoon.
    • In this way, I was able to record about 18 hours per day for 7 days in a row. The mics never left the woods and survived curious Grizzly Bears, blustery winds, and several rainstorms!
    • After growing up in the American Southwest, one of my favorite things about Alaska is the lack of snakes, ticks, scorpions, and poisonous ivy.
    • You need to be VERY aware of the dangers of bears and moose, but having the ability to bushwhack without constantly watching for things that sting or bite you was amazing. It is one of the best feelings in the world to be wandering freely through the boreal forest of Alaska. Just listening and hiking and listening and hiking and listening…

I always record and archive at 192 kHz for conservation and preservation purposes.
However, all sounds are delivered in 96 kHz unless there was useful frequency content present above 48 kHz. Then the audio is delivered at 192 kHz.
4 of 49 tracks are included at 192 kHz. Bats are the only wildlife above 48 kHz in these recordings.

    DESCRIPTION:
Alaska: Rain has the vast, beautiful crackling of arctic thunderstorms. Hear soothing rain deep in the boreal forest. Hear massive post-rain drips plopping and the musical call of Swainson’s Thrushes singing in the rain. Hear thunderclaps that ripple across glacial valleys and the soothing noise of a million raindrops on cottonwood leaves.
    • This library offers you a large collection of arctic rain. I hope you enjoy listening to the natural music of the weather as it sings through the boreal forests of Alaska.

2% FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & CARBON NEUTRAL:
    • Two percent of the price of this library is donated to an environmental cause, as an “artist royalty” for the planet!
    • Carbon offset credits were purchased to offset my field recording travel for this library.

    KEY FEATURES:
    • A Cinela Kelly Rain Cover was used. So, all recordings were captured deep in the forest.
    • Rain in the boreal forest of cottonwood, birch, and spruce
    • Light, moderate, and heavy rain
    • Post-rain canopy drips broken loose by the wind
    • Rippling thunderclaps
    • All recordings include birds

RECORDING TIPS – HOW TO RECORD RAIN:
    • Use microphones known to perform well in high humidity. I use Sennheiser microphones. View my full gear list – here
    • Use cables made with Neutrik X-HD Series waterproof connectors. This keeps water from getting into your cable connection points. Once you have these connectors, you don’t need to wrap your XLR connections in electrical tape.
    • Use a dry bag for your recorder. I like the Sea to Summit 65L bags because they have a wide mouth and can easily fit a recording bag through the opening.
    • Put your dry bag at least 25 feet away and cover it with local foliage. Otherwise you’ll just record the sound of rain hitting a dry bag.
    • Use a Cinela Pianissimo Double Mid/Side blimp with a Kelly Rain Cover.
    • Coat the inner cover of the Cinela Pianissimo with NixWax as Cinela directs on their website. This is a water repellant molecule that is also acoustically transparent. The water repellant causes the water to bead up and roll off while also letting the air through. Read more about how NixWax works – here
    • The honeycomb of the Kelly Rain cover disperses drops as they hit the blimp which minimizes thumps. However, don’t use the Kelly Rain cover in areas with lots of insects because they tend to get stuck in the honeycomb, buzz for hours, and ruin recordings. The honeycomb cover also doubles as excellent protection for the blimp if an bear/moose/elk decide to chew on it.
    • Find a section of forest with low and dense deciduous leaves. These leaves catch the rain so drips don’t “thump” on the blimp. Occasional thumps during heavy rain are okay because they are easy to edit out in post.
    • Waterproofing a microphone blimp is totally game changing. I can now leave my rig out in the elements for 24 hours without fear of rain. Waterproof blimps and a 32-bit float recorders have opened up a whole new world of recording for me  and I couldn’t be more excited.
    • Build a platform of local foliage to cover the blimp for extra protection. George Vlad has an excellent video on how to build a natural rain canopy – here.
    • I learned many of these rain recording techniques from George Vlad, so make sure you check out his work at Mindful Audio.

    RECORDING STORIES:
Lake Clark is a massive 40 mile glacial lake with a major Alaska Range mountain pass at the north end of the lake. As a result of the area’s geography, wind whips down from the mountain pass and sails across the lake unimpeded. When I arrived in late May at Lake Clark National Park, the spring leaves were budding and the boreal forest had a lovely fresh pop of green from new leaves. When these gusting winds reached the boreal forest made up of cottonwood, birch, and spruce, the foliage came alive.

For two days of the trip, a strong storm came through with winds powerful enough to make 6-foot lake swells. This made for ideal wind recording conditions! Although it can be tricky to capture the sound of spring foliage without birdsongs, the secret is to record during the day when there are extremely heavy winds. When winds are strong enough, birds tend to stop singing so under these conditions you can record daytime winds even during springtime. Otherwise, you have to record wind at night while the majority of the wildlife sleeps.

  • Ambisonics Ambisonic Overview: ALASKA Play Track 66 sounds included, 299 mins total $70

For this sound effects library, we traveled across Alaska, from the extreme north to the south coast to capture the spirit of these nordic and wild landscapes: Boreal forests, arctic and alpin tundras, glaciers, rivers, and lakes.

Here the soundscapes reflect the extreme weather conditions: Silent ambiances punctuated by the elements: Wind, snow, rain, serving the erosion.

In this wilderness, animals remain discreet. We had the chance to capture many birds with our microphones: Owls, ducks, seagulls, trumpeter swans, bald eagles, common ravens, migratory birds, and many other species – and a few other animals: Hoary marmots, arctic marmots, squirrels and moose.

-The sound bank contains 66 sound takes recorded in ambisonic at 24/96khZ (a total of 330 files).

  • Ambisonics Ambisonic Overview: CANADA Play Track 68 sounds included, 329 mins total $70

We traveled across Canada, from the east coast to the west coast, and from the north to the Southern American’ border to capture the spirit of this fantastic country and its wild landscapes:
infinite forest and boreal forest, huge lakes, mountain rivers, torrents, ocean, plains, alpine tundra, mountain ranges, caves, and also city environments.

Over the course of 3 months we captured quiet soundscapes from gigantic boreal forests only populated by birds and squirrels. We went to the end of the north road, to the edge of the Saint James Bay, where the ice winds of the Arctic met the tundra and the end of the boreal forest.
We discovered many lakes and rivers that characterize this wild country. We crossed the gigantic plains of Manitoba to join the Rocky Mountains and the British Colombia.

Facing this wilderness, we did not forget the cities and its humans: In Montreal and Ottawa we captured many atmospheres: markets, urban parks, streets and pedestrian areas.

-> We went record in these locations: Nova Scotia, Montreal, Ottawa, Tadoussac, Bois Robert, Bay James, Ruppert river, Harricana river, Temiscaming forest, Chapleau Faunetic Reserve, Ontario Forest, Manitoba’s prairies, Northern Rocky Mountains, Salmon Glacier, Lynn canyon, Callaghan lake, Jasper.
-> All GPS coordinate are include in the sound sheet.

-The sound bank contains 68 sound takes (total duration: 329 minutes), recorded in 24/96 kHz and split into 272 files
