Industrial Ambiences

Industrial sound effects and recordings – from factories, construction sites, docks and much more

  • Metallitronic is sound designer Nathan Moody’s latest collection of intense textures, a library of nearly three hours’ worth of metallic membranes and objects excited by electronic signals.

Metallitronic was created using advanced synthesis techniques played back through various transducers into cymbals, gongs, bowls, steel plates, prefab metal buildings, and other resonant metallic objects, close-miked in stereo with extended-frequency-range microphones. This collection radically expands a sound designer’s palette of stressed-metal sounds, horror and tension elements, crystalline creaks and groans, unsettling background atmospheres, rattling vehicular interiors, creature sound sweeteners, the sound of massive machinery, earth-shaking rumbles, and stochastic, complex rhythms.

Some textures let the complex synthesizer textures shine through – intense on their own, even if they weren’t amplified through metal – but the primary focus is on metallic drones, hits, pings, stresses, groans, wails, resonances, rattles, and unique timbres that can be layered into almost any project. The scale of the sounds ranges from detailed to overwhelmingly massive. The sounds invite aggressive filtering and extreme pitch shifting.

Every sound is recorded in stereo at 24 bits, 192 kHz, and many sounds have ultrasonic frequencies. This library includes nearly three hours of recordings, all fully tagged with metadata. Multiple articulations are ganged into single files for convenience and organization.

  • Industrial Ambiences Power Station Play Track 84 sounds included, 318 mins total $50

Boilers, turbines, recycle pumps! Desulphurisation flues, electrostatic precipitators, and solar photovoltaic arrays! We don’t entirely know what these things do – but we know for certain they sound amazing!

Last year we were granted access to one of the UK’s largest coal-fuelled power stations. With hard hats, steel toes, and a swag of mics we recorded every space and machine we could. The result is a highly comprehensive collection of industrial recordings that describe heavy 20th century industry.

We’re talking about the archetypal power station too, not something dumbed down for 2020. This place was the real deal! Great big looming cooling towers, massive halls of turbine engines, coal mills, rumbling underground passages, rooms full of electrical gadgets, pumps of all types, oh and a coal train unloading a 100 ton hopper.  It’s a hell of a library.

We recorded in a quad setup using a pair of Sanken CO-100ks, a pair of Sennheiser 8020s. We also had a Schoeps CMXY nearby getting an independent perspective. The recordings are versatile, pitch like crazy, and are useful for hundreds of applications.

These power stations won’t be around much longer – so we’re glad we got a chance to record this beast of industry while we could.

    Enjoy!

“There’s a lot of great stuff in here.  A nice variety of steadies for sci-fi and industrial use.  There’s also tracks with just the right amount of activity (not TOO busy).  Authentic scale is hard to fake so this is a great pack of sounds to have for large mechanical spaces.  Great steam/air releases too, and a large servo motor startup that is a real gem.” -Dave Farmer

“It is always a handy to have a library from these guys.  Well recorded and full of interest, Power Station is a great library and full of never before heard sounds. It’s sometimes difficult to visualise a space from a recording, but definitely not with this collection. They’re huge and real. Most of the time drones and tones can feel synthetic, but they have really managed to capture a true real industrial soundscape. They are definitely colossal.” – Ben Meechan

  • Want the sounds of Athens? The Athens Rooftop sound effects library delivers 9 long ambiences recorded from different perspectives, and at different times of day – from calm mornings to busy days and nights.

In order to capture Athens’ soundscape in all its nuances, very low-noise Neumann Microphones and Sound Devices Recorders were used to record long takes (between 8 and 21 minutes each) totaling to over 2 hours of audio.

The recording location was a two floor rooftop on a three storey building above a very small street with no nearby traffic that allowed recording the city with some distance from above: Traffic, restaurants, bars, construction work, birds – in some evening recordings we hear crickets in the distance, in some day recordings the AC of a neighbouring flat is running.

Most of the recordings can also be used to represent a general city ambience, while some takes include specific regional sounds like Greek walla, churches and cicadas characteristic for the Greek capital.

  • City Life Sound Effects Urban Air Play Track 33 sounds included, 146 mins total $57

Urban Air is a collection of long duration / ready to use / surround urban backgrounds.

This is aXLsound’s first surround ambience library, it has been recorded across different cities with various microphones setup ( LCR ORTF / QUAD / 5.0 ) and then carefully collected and edited into 5.0 surround tracks.

You’ll find various moods and sonic characteristics including: downtown, suburban, industrial, small towns, quiet, loud and annoying traffic beds, wet city, side streets, parks, wide city squares, diffuse and distant urban elements, clean air tones or dirty gritty city noise …

The duration of the tracks varies between 02m 30s for the shortest and more than 08 minutes with the vast majority lasting around 04-05 minutes, so long scenes shouldn’t be a problem. Also, some sounds include markers highlighting (un)interesting sounds and events.

For more convenience, 2 versions are available for this library :

     –  C / LR / LsRs : the 5.0 sounds are delivered “splitted” in three separate files :  ( 1 mono + 2 stereo files ) , this way you can easily use the stereo files if you don’t need surround.

    – .C / .L / .R / Ls / .Rs : multiple mono files

This ambience pack contains 33 sounds / 99 files embedded with full and detailed metadata ( Soundminer, Basehead, iXML ).

  • Aeolus is a collection of gritty and eerie sound design elements performed entirely by intense winds. These recordings were made on custom-made wind harps, handmade props, barbed wire fences, telephone poles, and other found objects. It is utterly unlike a normal wind library.

This collection of layers and elements of howls, drones, moans, creaks, rattles, clatters, and clanks provides rich material for the creation of unsettling ambiences, eerie presences, spooky room tones, and textural sweeteners for realistic winds. Aeolus is filled with conveniently long takes of piano wire, power lines, barbed wire, and other found and prepared objects that rumble, chitter, chatter, resonate, and whistle, in both gusty and sustained winds. Its sounds are perfect for horror scenes, magical effects, straining force fields, steampunk ambiences, extreme weather, high desert dramatic tension, or rusty post-apocalyptic soundscapes.

This UCS-compliant sound library is not a pure field recording collection; it contains lengthy recordings that are both minimally processed and extremely time- and pitch-altered. Some recordings lasted overnight, then reduced to mere minutes, remapping sound events into unfamiliar cadences or into/out of human hearing range.

Aeolus includes over two hours of raw recordings and twenty additional minutes of designed sounds from the original recordings, ready to use in a project or to serve as a launchpad for further inspiration.
