The Sonomar Collection: Pianos sound effects library began with a curious question: What new and unconventional sounds can be made with a piano for use in sound design?
The result is 652 enigmatic sounds exploring the sonic properties of various pianos to create suspense and tension in your audio projects. Created by sound designer and recordist Martin Pinsonnault (Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club) and the Sonomar team, the Pianos library blurs the line between music and sound design – captured at 192kHz using contact mics and an MKH-8040 for endless possibilities in pitching and processing.
Available in three unique collections, this expressive library combines the resonant nature of pianos with experimental approaches to recording, performing, and preparing this classic instrument:
Pianos – Broken contains 63 rusty, grinding, rhythmic growling piano hits for eerie roars and anxiety-inducing resonances. Includes percussive performance by Thomas Brodeur from the Sonomar team.
Pianos – Prepared features 539 textured punches, decays, chords and notes – ripe with complex harmonics, string rattles and vibrations. Created by placing objects on the strings of a piano with performance by Mingan Sauriol.
Pianos – Designed expresses the limitless possibilities of the raw recordings with pitched and processed sounds ready to drag-and-drop directly into your designs.
Each sound file is embedded with rich metadata to help you find the sounds you need with a fast and precise search. Unique descriptions of each recording encompass both literal sonic qualities as well as the images they invoke to enhance your creative workflow. Experience the power of magnetic force with Sonomar Collection: Magnetic, featuring over 1,600 designed impacts, rattles and scrapes as well as the 200+ raw recordings used to create them. With deep tonal resonances, subtle debris rattles and sharp impacts, Magnetic offers a wide variety of high quality recordings for your sound design needs that showcase all aspects of magnetic attraction. Use it as a toolkit to design pulses, subs, punches and beyond.
To capture these sounds, sound designer and recordist Martin Pinsonnault (Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club) and the team at Sonomar amassed a collection of magnets – ranging from small watch batteries to large speaker magnets and a variety of metal objects. Using MKH-8040 microphones in an XY setup, Sonomar recorded numerous vibrations, collisions and resonances resulting from a wide range of magnetic intensity. The high sample rate of 192kHz opens up limitless potential for pitching and processing, a feature that is masterfully exemplified by the designed sounds within the collection that are ready to use in your audio projects.

Skillfully performed using glasses as instruments, Sonomar Collection: Crystal Sing features 46 clean, high quality recordings of ringing vibrations perfectly suited for your harmonic tonal needs. This unique collection contains sonorous ringing tones at various pitches as well as sharp squeaks and rubs. Use the raw recordings to add hypnotic resonant layers to your projects, or alter them to experience the depth of Crystal Sing’s harmonic range.
To capture these sounds, sound designer and recordist Martin Pinsonnault (Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club) and the Sonomar team used six different types of glasses including Ricard, cognac and champagne flute glasses. The tonal vibrations created by rubbing a wet finger along the rim of the glass were recorded in 192kHz with MKH-8040 microphones in ORTF setup. Each glass produced its own pitch and tone dependent on its size, shape, and the amount of water added. The rich high frequency response and minimal noise make these clean harmonic tones ideal for pitching and processing.

• In Avalanche and Tree-alanche, get a powerful collection of sliding snow and ice from the pristine wilderness of the Eastern Cascades, Washington. Hear massive slabs of snow break free and tumble down mountains with majestic power. Hear chunky slides as refrigerator-sized chunks of ice careen down slopes and waterfalls of powder moving like rivers of sand. Hear tree-alanches as snow and ice plastered to branches is dislodged by sun-melt and wind. Hear hellacious debris clouds as gusts hit local canopies and dislodge snow hurricanes of powder, ice, and branches.
• This library offers you a collection of sounds from an awe inspiring natural event. Avalanches are dangerous and extremely difficult to record. They have the natural power akin to tornadoes or wildfires. I hope you enjoy listening to the roars of wintertime in the remote mountains of Washington.

The LA Ambisonics sound effects library is an extensive collection of 239 immersive urban ambience recordings from throughout the city of Los Angeles. Add these LA ambiences sounds to strengthen your scenes with an authentic city soundscape — from beach and boardwalk sounds, city and freeway traffic, to street and restaurant walla, plane pass bys, and more.
Recorded by Academy Award®-winner Mark Mangini (Blade Runner 2049, Mad Max: Fury Road), LA Ambisonics was captured at various locations throughout Los Angeles including LAX, Venice Beach, Hollywood Boulevard, Union Station, Laurel Canyon and more. To capture these stunning ambiences, Mangini took the opportunity to think critically about what makes Los Angeles sound unique, and how to best achieve the immersion integral to the ambisonics format.
“I’ve been a fan of Ambisonic recording for some time, having developed my own microphones and plugins, not only for their sonic verisimilitude but for their obvious potential in cinema sound. While ‘immersion’ is the word on everyone’s lips as a sonic panacea, there is a great deal of controversy about how best to achieve it. I believe that it is in the reproduction of a believable 360 degree sound field that one achieves the highest level of ‘immersion’ and Ambisonics is one of the most practical and sonically pleasing ways to get there.” – Mark Mangini
Delivered in both Ambisonic and stereo formats, each audio file is embedded with rich descriptions for quick intuitive search results. With A Sound Effect, Asbjoern has created a web site where our international community can browse, learn, and share the vast fruits of our labors. Together we are accelerating the very real potential power of sound design as a recognized art form.
A Sound Effect is an excellent resource for us to keep our animated films sounding unique and exciting.
A Sound Effect is a great asset to have discovered.
We found the site very easy to navigate, purchasing and downloads were effortless and the effects themselves are awesome! Asbjoern has done us all a great service.
We’ll definitely be back!
There are many great independent sound effect libraries available these days. The main problem with having so many, is keeping track of them!
A Sound Effect is a great hub, and is one of the first places I visit to look for sounds by category or genre. I started coming here to see if I could find libraries that I knew I had heard, but forgot WHERE I had heard them.
And in the process discovered libraries I never would have found otherwise. Great work! Keep it up!
We're always looking for new sounds to mangle, so when A Sound Effect had a holiday sale, I tried them out.
The purchase experience is really smooth and quick, and delivery is almost instant.
I'll definitely come back to them again in the future!
A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!
I often need very specific types of sounds so I've become a big supporter of independent recorders.
Until now I've always had to go to their individual websites. Now I can find them all in one place.
And, Asbjoern is great to work with!
A Sound Effect is a well curated boutique sound effects shop and a great place to find industry interviews and learning resources.
