This week on A Sound Effect, we have easily-recognizable recordings and emotive drones you just can’t put your finger on. You’ll hear the growl and buzz of cruisers and motocross racers, the rhythmic footsteps of jogging on a treadmill, kitchen appliance foley, Americans protesting in Los Angeles, and UI sounds from futuristic devices. You’ll also experience creepy, complex atmospheres and distortions that were creatively recorded from drum and guitar effects. Whether you need an abstract mood or one with a very clear opinion, there are lots of sounds to experience in this recap!
'Dirt & Asphalt Vol 1: Road bike collection' by Output Audio features a whole lot of wheels owning the pavement. With a 450cc Yamaha, 600cc Triumph, and a 1000cc Apeillia, this library has pass-bys of all speeds, as well as onboard recordings of accelerations, decelerations, and idling. As a library created by a team that helped provide SFX of high-performance vehicles for 'Need for Speed Rivals', these sounds are primed for granular synthesis techniques, too. But wait! There's more further down in this recap...
'No Input Feedbacks' by Alessio Mellina is an intriguing collection with over 70 minutes of looping drones from a Xiwi passive matrix mixer as it combines multiple guitar and bass stomp effects like the Moog Minifooger MF Ring and the Electro-Harmonix Holy Stain. You'll hear memorable, edgy tones that will creep into your ears and whisper sweet distorted affections with pulsating fuzz, reverberant whines, melodic stuttering, and much more. If you need some fresh experimental sounds to jump-start your soundscape, definitely check this library out.
As modern technology propels us into futuristic wearable devices and smart entertainment, you can't help but feel like we're getting closer to The Jetsons, despite no flying cars. Yet while our current technology is relatively silent, Sound Ex Machina has captured the hi-tech aesthetic we all love in 'UI Sounds: Futuristic'. This collection has 400 user interface sounds of calculations, errors, alarms, and more that pleasantly notify your characters, players, users, or even purchasers on your eCommerce site. For UI sounds with calm, assuring authority, give this library a listen.
'The Kitchen – Audio Playset' by UberDuo takes us back to one of our favorites household areas for a collection of nearly 100 sound effects and 2 impulse responses. In this library you will hear sounds of a blender, toaster oven, microwave, and food processor with their doors, buttons and switches. You'll also hear objects like egg cartons, jars, spatulas, pans, and timers as they are opened and utilized - and on top of that, you'll get 'The Kitchen Sink' library, too! Whether you need SFX of someone preparing food or cleaning up afterward, this library has a lot for you to hear.
'The Treadmill Workout FX' by Tall Tale Sound is a pack of sounds from a machine that exists for people to get their burn on. This library has 8 recordings of an electric treadmill that has endured the pounding footsteps of runners since the early '90s. You'll hear recordings of the belt as it runs at various speeds by itself, from 1 mph to 8 mph, as well as the instantly recognizable rhythms of someone walking, jogging, and running. If you need a quick pack of treadmill sounds and you don't feel like putting on your running shoes, give this one a listen.
'Dirt & Asphalt Vol 2: Motocross Collection' by Output Audio is the second installment in their two-wheeled vehicle collection. In this volume, you will hear recordings from two motocross events featuring various classes and engines sizes from 85cc to 450cc. You'll hear stunts and maneuvers as well as pass-bys, revving, and accelerations from groups and individuals, plus a little bit of walla from before the race. Between this library and their road bike collection, Output Audio has plenty of motorcycle sounds for you to choose from.
Lukáš Tvrdoň takes you into the minds of the deranged with his new library 'The Horrid'. These 22 ambiences use tense symbolism to emote pounding, suspenseful industrial areas, cinematic metallic creaks and bell-like tones, and unsettling ambiences that swirl and surround you. This library offers you a true 70 minutes of content, as the atmospheres evolve for around three minutes and artfully loop back to the beginning. Whether you need unnerving ambiences right away or you are looking for some dark inspiration, this library will raise your blood pressure.
The team at Audio Shade hit the streets of LA to capture voices of activism for their new library 'Crowds – American Protest'. Recorded on 12 Nov 2016 and 21 Jan 2017, this library features people who showed up to oppose the election of Donald Trump. It includes chants that support immigration, women's reproductive rights, and the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as distant speeches, cheers, crowd walla, and more. Plus, the profits from this library will be donated to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. To not only hear support for your causes but also financially support them, this is the library for you.
