This week on A Sound Effect, we have lots of new sound effects from the far reaches of the world and your imagination. We have ambiences that cross the spans of Japan and Tasmania, windy towns, filing cabinet foley, and larger-than-life hand spinners. We also have unnerving wobbles, analogue glitchy UI sounds, interiors for your favorite spacecraft, and another massive collection of high-quality, high-powered sci-fi weapons. With such a wide variation, you’re sure to hear something you like this week.
'Town Winds' by Tone Glow Libraries is a library that captures suburban areas like town squares, backyards, schools, rural streets, fields, and marinas. This collection features windy ambiences with residential character like the ‘ping’ of a flagpole cord swaying in the breeze, wind blowing through backyard trees and rattling fences, and gusts through a railway station. To amplify these characteristics, the sounds were captured in areas relatively free of birds and traffic, so it won't be hard to find use for these flexible, subtle sounds.
'Future Weapons 3' needs no introduction. In their third installment, SoundMorph created a massive library featuring 29 new weapons. You’ll hear a new take on grenade launchers, assault rifles, shotguns, and machine guns, as well as ultra-futuristic laser canons, plasma pistols, acid hand guns, crossbows, blasters, bio weapons, and much more. You’ll also get sounds of scanners and shields, and you’ll hear what a 'venom spitter' feels like. At this point, you probably know you want to hear the demo, so go right ahead!
' Sounds Of Nature: Tasmania Ambiences' by Fennec FX brings you the sounds of an island packed with species you will rarely find anywhere else. You’ll hear a plethora of birds like yellow wattlebirds, green rosellas, bellbirds, wild cockatoos, and of course those laughing kookaburras. You’ll also hear several insects, frogs and more from Tasmanian forests and islands like Cradle Mountain National Park, Styx Forest Reserve, and Bruny Island. Whether you are looking for something specific or exotic, this library has the fresh ambiences you want.
Get immersed in beloved Nippon in JP Belliard's newest library: 'Asia Reminds II – Japan Ambiences'. This library offers over 5 hours of recordings from the country’s cities, towns, train stations, and parks, so you can explore historic Osaka, go to nerd central in Tokyo's Akiharaba and Nipponbashi's Denden Town, hear crowds crossing the famous Shibuya intersection, sit in the peaceful urban forests in Kyoto and Kibune & Kurama, and navigate busy train stations - all in stereo, MS, or 5.0. If you want your audience to feel surrounded by cherry blossoms and udon, check out this library.
You may have plenty of door sound libraries, but what about filing cabinets - an object that often pops up in games? 'MicroTone: Filing Cabinets' by Tone Manufacture is the answer to this need with over 130 sounds of filing cabinets being opened and closed at various speeds and perspectives. You’ll hear cabinets made of metal and wood as they creak, rattle, slam, and roll along their tracks. You can even experiment and create steampunk-style doors and interesting impacts, too. For a concentrated library that's begging for your creativity, check this one out.
'Spaceship Interiors' by Filmnoise, Inc has the moody, immersive environments that tell the stories of the brave souls who are forging into the unknown. This library has over 210 ambiences that last from 30 seconds to over two minutes and give you emotive and almost musical backgrounds for your spaceships and enclosed environments. It also comes with 30 different alarms for that final touch! If you need ambiences with that uneasy futuristic tension, check this one out.
'Glitch UI' by Tone Manufacture is an interesting collection of user interface sounds picked from video files, circuit bent keyboards, and hard drives on their last leg. These sounds were repurposed from the ‘Error Tone’ library to fit your analogue aesthetic needs with dry clicks, glitches, noises, pops, thumps, and more. You’ll get over 220 sounds with extensive metadata that will lead you to the most satisfying sound for your action. If you’re building a 80s-inspired world like Event 0 or Alien, definitely give this one a listen.
'Hand Spinner – Source & Pre-Designed' by Fox Audio Post-Production is a surprisingly cool library if you’ve never heard of fidget spinners. This library has drones and ambiences of these toys spinning on various surfaces like marble, wood, laptops, pelican cases, and metal, giving you sounds that can easily be used as whooshing plasma engines, mechanical drives, the Doppler effect, and more. If you want to be inspired by all the raw and designed sounds you can get from such a small object, give this one a listen.
'Wobble' by Badlands Sound is a library of 30 wobbling ambiences and drones that will add an unnerving edge to your backgrounds. Each sound is two minutes long with the level of detail we’ve come to expect from Badlands Sound. All together you get an hour of detailed ambiences, making this an easy library to pick up and experiment with - and for about the cost of lunch, this library will save you plenty of time in a pinch!
