9 new sound libraries Asbjoern Andersen

This week on A Sound Effect, we have new libraries with the meticulous details you need fast. We have collections with disgusting gore, vinyl record pops and hisses, smooth futuristic aircraft, winter scenes in suburban neighborhoods, a heavy-duty excavator, and four experimental libraries with granular elements, synthetic convolution reverbs, drones inspired by climate change, and unique user interface elements. Whether you want your audience to wince, trip out, or suspend their disbelief, you’ll find what you need here. Happy listening!
Granular

  • GRANULAR is the ultimate source library for anyone looking to add compelling and distinctive granular textures into their sound design; it contains designed sounds, a large collection of processed sounds, and some additional raw recordings.
This library is the culmination of many hours of exploration and experimentation in the area of granular sound processing, using a variety of plugins, audio tools, recording techniques and processes.
GRANULAR features 395 24bit / 96kHz WAV files, each embedded with full metadata.

'Granular' by Barney Oram has 395 textures that come from experimental yet practical experience in exploring and applying sound. With an aesthetic that feels both synthetic and organic, you'll get sounds of alarms, UI blips, glitches, impacts, and loads of designed, processed, and raw textures. Plus, the metadata has been diligently written to be your guiding light in such an abstract world. From crackling plastic to buzzing power surges to glitchy hard drives, you'll find it here!

Residential Winter - Ambisonics

  • Following Residential Ambiences approach, RESIDENTIAL WINTER – Ambisonics brings you 15 ambisonic residential atmospheres recorded during different times of a day in winter: early morning, morning, afternoon, evening and night.

In these recordings you will hear birds chirping, traffic, sirens wailing in distance, dogs barking, cats meowing and rooster calls. Recording done at night and in the early morning are very quite due to the absence of traffic.

Recordings have been done with a Sennheiser Ambeo + Zoom F8. All files are in 96 kHz/24 bit and meta-tagged.

    About this library:

This Ambisonics sound effects library contains the original recordings in A-Format (no processing whatsoever) and in B-format (AmbiX). By using Harpex, 5.1 (LRCLfeLsRs) and stereo (ORTF) mixdowns have been also added. Note that the Lfe channel is mute. It hasn’t been removed to follow the SMPTE  path order.

The Ambisonics version contains all the formats. Stereo version only includes the stereo files.

Soundcloud demo plays the stereo version.

UCS Compatible Metadata embedded. Fields included CatID, Category, Subcategory, FX Name, Filename, Description, BWDescription, Library, RecType, Microphone, Designer, Manufacturer, Keywords.

'Residential Winter Ambisonics' by GainWalkers has 15 ambisonic atmospheres from different times throughout a frosty day. These ambiences were recorded in a suburban area to give you sounds of small birds, barking neighborhood dogs, random roosters, lots of alley cats, and distant traffic and sirens. They are delivered in their unprocessed A-format, AmbiX B-format, and 5.1, plus there is an ORTF stereo version if you’d like to save a little money. If you need winter sounds from around the block, check this one out.

Harmonic Series Drones

  • • Harmonic Series Drones is an extension of several of my music compositions. Over the past few years, I’ve been very interested in data sonification, writing several pieces that turn real-time weather data into music. This library was created using a drone generator that turns weather data into sound. I built this drone generator for my piece Sitka for piano and seasonal electronics.

    • Instead of pulling weather data from Sitka, Alaska, as I did in the piece, I used 2016 daily temperature data from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a fragile place wrapped up in current political drama and now open to drilling. This library is a sonification of 2016 temperature data in ANWR. The highest global temperature on record was recorded in 2016 (2016 Global Climate Report). It is even worse in the Arctic where temperatures are warming at twice the rate of lower latitudes (2016 Arctic Report Card). With this library, you’ll be able to hear the warming, and I hope this library helps to draw attention to the rapidly changing environment of the Arctic.

    • Each of the forty-eight drones corresponds to the average temperature of a day in 2016, with twelve drones from each of the four seasons. The drones are built from pure tones made from tightly filtered pink noise. These pure tones are then stacked in harmonic series relationships. For instance, a winter drone might consist of the fundamental and four lowest partials. A summer drone could have the fundamental and partials seven, fourteen, and thirty-two.

    • The drones stand on their own without the story. If you never knew they started with weather data, you would still find a variety of pure, rich, microtonal drones with enough variety to fit the mood of any project.

    2% FOR THE ENVIRONMENT:
    • Two percent of the price of this library is donated to an environmental cause. I view it as an “artist royalty” for the planet!

    KEY FEATURES:
    • All files are sample seamless loops. So, there are no fade-ins and outs and the files are ready for looping in any DAW.
    • Consonant and dissonant drones
    • Simple and complex drones
    • Each of the 48 drones is between 1 and 1.5 minutes in duration
    • Non-periodic undulating drones
    • Each harmonic has a randomized gain, so the drones pulse non-periodically.
    • Drones were made from tightly filter pink noise, so drones have a small amount of soothing and airy pink noise.
    • Microtonal harmonic series relationships create beautiful beating between drone harmonics.
    • All drones have a fundamental of G1 (49Hz). Transpose them as needed to fit any project.
    • Partials are included in the metadata, for example, “fundamental_G1_harmonics_1_2_3_4_7_16”.
    DATA SONIFICATION:
    • Weather data included in the Soundminer Description and BWAV description fields.
    • Temperature data was translated as a combination of lowest harmonic, number of harmonics, and highest harmonic.
    • Generally, lower temperatures include bass harmonics and higher temperatures include treble harmonics. For example, the hottest day of the year only included harmonics 18 and 24.
    • Location: weather data is from the NOAA station at Helmut Mountain, Alaska in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

’Harmonic Series Drones' is an unusual library from what we’ve come to expect from Thomas Rex Beverly, but once you hear the idea behind it, you’ll see why it’s not a surprise. Out of his interest in data sonification, Thomas Rex Beverly created a drone generator in Max/MSP that turns real-time weather data into sound and music. This library features this concept based on the temperatures recorded in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. Each of the 48 drones reflects a daily temperature from all four seasons - and the change we're seeing in that area.

  • Cinematic & Trailer Sound Effects Abandoned Oil Tank Play Track 327 sounds included $40

On a recording trip to the smaller Danish port town Struer, I came across an abandoned empty oil tank. Inside I found two giant wires attached to the floor and the ceiling of the tank, almost like a huge 2 stringed double bass. I’m telling you the reverb in there was longer than the Eiffel Tower on a cloudless day !

On the outside this was just an empty abandoned building, but it turned out it was not empty at all because it was full of sound and a few dead birds. I’m glad I was curious enough to go inside for a closer investigation and not just pass by.

After several hours of concentrated recording, it was nice to get my ears back out in dry air. I’m happy there are no open sends to Valhalla in real life but experiencing the eternal resonance on the low frequencies from the wires was absolutely amazing.

Abandoned Oil Tank was recorded with a LOM basic Ucho stereo pair, a Zoom H6 and the LOM Geofon. All files are in 96 kHz/24 bit and contain the original recordings.

The result is a unique sound effect library including balloon pop impulse responses from a truly unique location that very recently became even more unique since word says that the oil tank is no more and has abandoned this world.

327 individual sounds – all tagged with Universal Category System (UCS) metadata.

  • Metal Sound Effects MetalMotion Play Track 2000+ sounds included, 239 mins total $110

MetalMotion is a sound design construction kit that contains four hours of moving metal mayhem: clicks and clanks, rolls and drags, wronks and squeals, scrapes and rattles, ranging from from tiny to monstrous. Nathan Moody’s unique performances with unusual combinations of props produce everything from Foley-like movements to intense groans and howls.

Whether you’re covering a robot’s movements, sweetening weapon Foley, making crafting or pick-up sounds in a game, placing unusual layers beneath a kaiju’s roar, or crushing a submarine with undersea pressure, this collection covers the full range of subtle to raucous. Each file has many performance variations for creative choice and game audio asset creation.

While there are some tasty impacts within, this library’s true focus is on characterful movements: handling, rummaging, opens, closes, ratchets, swirls, rolls, drags, drops, spins, rubs, zuzzes, and bows. Metal containers, filing cabinets, modern appliances, vintage (and very rusty) tools, cymbals, bells, grills, plates, bars, rods, and tubes, and many other props lent their voices to this collection.

This UCS-compliant library was recorded with a combination of standard, contact, and ultrasonic-capable microphones through Millennia preamps. Sample rates vary based on the amount of ultrasonic content in each file. The audio files are mastered for realism, ready for extreme processing and pitch shifting of your own, but still useful in more grounded contexts.
