This week on A Sound Effect we have eight new libraries. There are urban ambiences from the Windy City, rural sounds of snow at 10,000 feet, indoor and outdoor sports, drones that will make you anxious, a detailed library featuring a 1992 Volvo F12 truck, and plenty of tools and mechanisms. Feast your ears on all the sounds below:

Chicago - Urban Atmosphere

Environments & Ambiences Chicago – Urban Atmosphere Play Track 137+ sounds included, 333 mins total $89

Get more than 5.5 hours of urban soundscapes from Chicago, Illinois. The recordings in the ‘Chicago – Urban Atmosphere’ library range from busy sidewalk ambiences, street corners, crowds, subways, skyline tones, horns, to back alley rumbles.

The library is recorded with a Sound Devices 702 recorder + a stereo pair of Schoeps CMC6s with the MK2 H capsules, and is embedded with extensive metadata.

Iconic Chicago sounds such as the El Train, Lower Wacker Drive, and Michigan Avenue are only some of the unique sounds found in this library. And although Chicago has many iconic features that create its soundscape, this library can be used for any city or urban application.

Lockdown

Materials & Texture Sound Effects Lockdown Play Track 1700+ sounds included $46

Get a huge variety of simple or complex lockdown mechanism sounds with a wide array of different latches and impacts with Lockdown, a performable Kontakt instrument and sound effects library.

We brought in dozens of props big and small to generate a massive array of source material recorded at 24 bit 192kHz. These included cameras, carabiners, wrenches, rack cases, knives, can openers, tongs, crimpers, solder suckers, file cabinet doors, vehicle doors and servos and much more – all with multiple unique performances per set.

Great care was taken to record each performance with the highest sonic quality and detail. We chose a pair of MKH50s in XY as our primary setup, creating a big, clean stereo image on every sound.

Lockdown is divided into two parts –
elements and designed:
The elements collection has all of the source recordings in their unaltered states. Each sound is edited, cleaned, volume matched and carefully metadata tagged.

The designed collection uses samples based on the elements recordings that have been transformed into entirely new and different sounds using heavy processing and layering. It was created to produce interesting design and transition sounds quickly and easily. Lockdown includes over 500 fully lockdowns of all sizes and scales.

'Lockdown' covers a very specific and often forgotten need. This massive library by echo | collective has sounds of lockdown mechanisms with carabiners, wrenches, knives, can openers, tongs, crimpers, filing cabinet doors, vehicle doors and more with multiple performances of each device. How abundant are these performances? With 1700 files and two Kontakt instruments, this library has the flexibility and variety to flesh out the devices, machines and living areas in your game or film.

Cabinet Shop

The library was recorded in Diebold’s Cabinet Shop, founded in 1936. It is a well-recognized local custom cabinet shop located in Logan Square, just North West of downtown Chicago.

General atmospheric sounds of the cabinet shop, such as air conditioners / heaters, fans, clocks and room tones, are also included.

The library covers different sound effects like engine during regular driving, reverse or accelerations. It was recorded with 3 microphones mounted under the hood and one inside the drivers’ cabin to capture the interior in sync with the engine.

It was recorded with two Sound Devices 702, two DPA 4061 microphones, two Sennheiser MKH 8040, Sony PCM-M10 and Rode NTG3.

In addition to the onboard sound you’ll find exterior driving, turning, stopping, turning engine on and off or reverse sounds recorded from 2 perspectives.

Also driving on the snow and asphalt effects recorded with DPA 4061 mounted near the tyres, and finally, passes recorded from 3 perspectives. Slow driving (20 to 40 km/h), medium speeds (40 to 80) and fast (from 80 to 140 km/h), stopping and accelerations.

Those sounds were recorded in mono with Rode NTG3 following a car, stereo ORTF recorded with MKH 8040s capturing passes from left to right, and stereo AB with Sony PCM-M10 capturing sound from right to left.

This library also contains some basic foley, like closing and opening doors, servo sounds, windows, buttons or seatbelts.

Continuing the popular Videogame Foley Essentials series (Vol. I, Vol. II, Vol.III), Vol. IV offers an additional 1325 individual sound effects all mixed at the same volume level, carefully cleaned of any unnecessary background noise and artifacts. These sounds are ready to be integrated into any audio middleware solution, such as Wwise or FMOD. Recorded with videogame development in mind, all sounds are short, snappy one-shots with dozens of iterations, making them ideal for layering, stretching and bending to achieve surprising results. The goal is to streamline the workflow for editors and sound designers by providing ready-to-use sound batches for their middleware projects, avoiding auditory repetition and fatigue for gamers while keeping them fully immersed in their upcoming adventures.

You’ll find in this library the following folders with clear nomenclature and corresponding metadata related to various interactions either with environmental objects or the characters in the game:
- Cameras: foley sounds of both analog and digital cameras, including manual and digital zooming, button pressing, photographic film and battery insertion, digital power-on and power-off sounds, shooting clicks, and the handling of all camera elements.
- Disks: CD, DVD and Blu-ray interactions, including the sound effects of respective players’ trays opening and closing, disk insertion and removal from various devices, button pressing, foley sounds of disks being placed, removed and inserted into different cases, and the handling of jewel cases and DVD cases. Also includes mechanical sounds of different recorders and players turning on and off.
- Radio: long takes of both AM and FM frequencies. AM frequencies prominently feature harsh static, noise and distortion, while FM frequencies include rapid radio station switching with garbled voices, brief musical stings, and smoother static sounds. These frequency types were recorded using both in-line and microphone techniques. Also includes short static bursts from a radio being turned off.
- Tape Cassettes: everything big, analog and noisy sounding; including cassettes, VHS and Betamax tapes being handled, inserted, and removed from various recorders and devices. Foley sounds of Walkman buttons, cassette and tape cases/boxes. Hums, hisses, ejecting and rewinding sounds from tapes and cassettes. Jack cables being inserted and removed from a tape deck.
- Vinyl: long takes of vinyl record grain loops, dozens of different needle drops, and over thirty audio files of genuine scratching, slowing down and speeding up sounds (with no digital pitch shifting or other software involved). Also includes foley sounds of records being removed and inserted into sleeves.
