If this last week’s new libraries were woven into a storyline, you would hear an exciting tale of a hockey player who leaves the sport to travel to the windy mountains of Jerall to fight Orcs. But after stumbling upon the Greybeards and fancying their peaceful ways, our hero decides to stay in their mountain sanctuary and meditate to the sound of droning bowls (plus, he can capture some pretty sweet impulse responses in High Hrothgar). Or, in other words, it’s time for a brand new SFX roundup :)
There is almost no situation more layered with sounds than a medieval fight. With shields, chain mail, plate armor and weapons, where do you even begin to find these sounds? Right here, of course, with Double Trouble Audio's 'Medieval Armor Impacts and Movement'. This library contains over 100 sounds of all these brutal interactions, varying in intensity and gore. If you’re creating a sword-wielding film or game, this library will supply the audible realism needed to transport the audience to another time.
'Immersive Motion Vol 1' contains a massive 8.72 GB and 250 minutes of swells and flows for immersive and emotional tones. If you’re a fan of Aphex Twin, you should give this library a listen. Straddling the edges of synthesis and organic-ness, these sounds range from sweeping vinyl-like drones to Celtic evolutions and dark transitions. Whether you need sounds for scoring a documentary or personal relaxation, enjoy these soundscapes by Alexander Gastrell.
We may finally be out of winter, but Articulated Sounds wants to keep us chilled. 'Ice Skating' features cold weather activities such as figure skating, free skating, hockey and more. These sounds are masterfully crafted for all the scrapes, scratches, pushes, drags, and glides you could need. Plus, with winter ambiences, stick slaps, footsteps, cloth sounds and puck hits, too, this library is ready to be implemented into your film or interactive project.
Eiravaein Works wanted to give us something different, something useful for sound designers, engineers, researchers and artists alike, and 'Dx' was what they created. This library contains sounds from audiometric and audiological tests, such as sweeps, spatializations, impulses, phase tests, resonance tones, and frequency sweeps. The tracks are even edited for the appropriate length of each test. With 888 sounds and noises of every color, this library will cover your needs whether they be artistic or academic.
With the increasing popularity of synthesized wind sounds in interactive media, 'Winds of Dovrefjell' is a breath of fresh air - if you don’t mind the pun. This library includes 71 minutes of wind recorded in the Dovre mountains of Norway where recordist Robin Barstow braved -20°C temperatures. Now that's dedication! In capturing the harsh climate, he recorded on top of summits, along the cliff sides, and near old mountain farms. Kjempebra, Robin!
Hzandbits discovered music in the kitchen with 'Bells & Bowls'. This library features recordings of multiple types of strikes on jugs, bowls, vases and plates made of glass and ceramic. The tones range from the ringing wobbles we expect from glass to interesting muted attacks that sound like piano hits. Plus, all tracks are tuned to their closest musical notes, so you can drop them right into your favorite sampler. For tones that are organic but pitch-perfect, check out this library.
If you’re looking to save money on sound effects, Original Sounds and Antisample are both running special SFX sales right now – well-worth checking out!
