Anderson has been working with sound for 24 years. His work includes recording, editing, designing, and mixing, and spans indie art-house classics (like Steve Buscemi’s acclaimed Trees Lounge and Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene) to award-winning documentaries (HBO’s miniseries The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst , Netflix’s Amanda Knox, and PBS’s popular American Experience) and features (Errol Morris’ Oscar-winning The Fog of War and Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan). Coll has helped to sharpen the focus and story of films with the creative use of sound.

Here, Anderson shares details on how he created his “Battle Crowds” collection and why it’s such a useful library.

What sparked the idea to create “Battle Crowds?”

Coll Anderson (CA): I was on a film several years ago and they were having a hard time getting the battle scenes to sound right. If you’re around Hollywood then you know there are a couple collections of battle effects from films that have been done over the years. But since most big battle scenes now are full of CGI where you have a group of 12 actors that you move around and then paste them all together to create this huge battle, you need the right sound to make it feel real. So a sound supervisor friend of mine called me up and asked, “What can you do for battle crowds?”

For me, this is like group ADR territory, but kind of not. I wondered, “What if I create sound effects that aren’t really group ADR with actors, but real people in a real space?”

I live in the woods in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York; it’s a great place to record. We called all the local colleges’ drama departments. Also, the Woodstock Film Festival is managed by some people who I know really well and we put the word out through them that we were looking for non-actors. We spent about six hours in the woods with about 60 people running around and we recorded them through a series of recorders. It was like a huge party and the people were really good at doing all of the stupid stuff that I asked them to do. I’m kinda goofy and so I asked for a lot of weird stuff.

I did crowd walla once in Detroit. They gave me an auditorium full of people for about 15 minutes and I could ask them to do all sorts of crazy stuff, which was really fun. The director was really into shaping the sound of all the people there and they were really cool with trying all the crazy stuff I was thinking about. Watching that director work with that crowd taught me to really have fun with groups of people as “a sound” and I just tried to work that way for “Battle Crowds.”

 

In New York, you captured recordings outdoors in the forest, in the field, and running around buildings and structures?

CA: The cool thing was we had people run around the buildings while screaming so they could ‘appear.’ We wanted microphone movement but you can’t really move a microphone because it makes too much noise. So you have to move your sound sources in a way that you get the movement.

We could have this crowd of 50 people run from point A to point B to point C and we set up microphone arrays all over as well as put recorders in the woods, 50 yards away, and pointed in the general direction of the crowd to record the whole entire event. We have recordings from really deep in the woods, and then recordings that were progressively closer to the group. We did a lot of running around buildings while yelling. When 50 people come out from behind a building, it’s like WOW. It was fun!

 

What were your mic setups?

CA: We had two complete Schoeps M/S packages. We had several Neumann KMR 81s. We had several Sony D-10’s. Then another recordist friend of mine showed up with another couple of Sanken stereo setups.

I’m a big Schoeps fan. I’ve been working with Schoeps microphones for 30 years. I’m also a big fan of recording M/S in the field. So everything I record is done the exact same way: M/S in the field, decoded so you have discrete L and R. That’s mainly my entire library.

We loaded everything into Pro Tools at 24bit/96k. We phase-aligned everything. There were lots of claps to get the recordings into phase.

Then everything is labeled in this classic “A, B, C, D, E, F, G” for the mics. So, for example, you have “Screaming 01 A,” “Screaming 01 B,” “Screaming 01 C,” “Screaming 01 D,” “Screaming 01 E,” “Screaming 01 F,” “Screaming 01 G,” and “Screaming 02 A,” “Screaming 02 B,” “Screaming 02 C,” “Screaming 02 D,” “Screaming 02 E,” “Screaming 02 F,” “Screaming 02 G.” So you can make it as focused or huge as you want. That’s how we’ve handled stuff like this in the past and I think it works well.

So the collection offers mono tracks that you can spread around the surround environment to create the scene you need?

CA: The collection is stereo and mono tracks. M/S is so handy because I use Soundminer a lot. If you ‘sum to mono’ then you’re just going to get the mid channel. So, if you’re in Soundminer and you hit the ‘sum to mono’ button you get this beautiful mono track because it just cancels the left and right out. It’s an easy way to work.

Or, if you spot into Pro Tools in stereo and you want it L-C-R, you can collapse it a little bit into the left-center-right channels. Or, if you want to split things out into the surrounds for the Atmos format then it’s easy to just pop things around you in the room.

 

Let’s talk about your mastering process. Since you recorded outside, did you do any noise reduction? And if so, what were the unwanted sounds you removed?

CA: Birds. It’s only ever birds here. Outside here there’s nothing. My property is adjacent to 300 acres of state land. There’s a small five-acre field around the house and the studio and we’re located at the end of a dead end road at the top of the mountain. It’s really, really, really isolated.

We use a bit of iZotope RX to De-noise but not a lot. We did a bit of De-birding. But not much.

We do a bit of cleaning and make sure there are nice fades on all the files so you can just throw the sounds into Pro Tools and nothing clicks or pops. I like when I’m cutting effects and everything is prepped in a way that helps you stay in the flow.

The recordings are clean and they’re really fat. So, you have the option of having a close presence or the option of having natural distance.

What’s nice about recording outside here is that when I yell I get a primary and secondary slap off some buildings. And because everything is so clean, you can really compress the sound and get a lot out of it without the noise floor being a bother.

The idea with these recordings is to not bake-in much EQ or compression. The recordings are clean and they’re really fat. So, you have the option of having a close presence or the option of having natural distance. I want to make a library where the editor has the option to bake-in the reverb they want and play with perspective but they have a really solid, organic, natural foundation to build from.

 

Is this collection geared toward historic battles or could it be used for modern warfare?

CA: It’s more geared towards a historic/medieval time period but there are lots of movement through the forest and feet running on dirt. There’s no classic ‘battle rattle’ of armor or weapons. You don’t hear the rattle of troops moving. That is something I’d love to do if I could do this again. I’d hand everybody a ton of stuff to wear and move them around so there is more ‘battle rattle.’

There are some sounds in this collection that you can use for modern battles. There is certainly screaming and yelling that could pass for modern battles, but most of this collection would feel more at home in a medieval setting.

There is a companion library to the “Battle Crowds” collection which was recorded with 40 kids at the house. I had them march through the house, run through the house, run in and out of the house, jump in unison, and things like that. I recorded singles, too, so a single person running through the house, and groups of two and three running through the house. So there are movement files that go as a companion to this “Battle Crowds” library. I think there is also some radio chatter that some Marine buddies of mine helped me with.

 

Any foreign-language battle calls?

CA: No, but there are a ton of ‘non-English’ walla. There are a lot of indiscernible language tracks.

The M&E struggle is real. You have to create these M&E’s for localization. Ultimately, there is always a push to make sure we have a component that is not going to mess up your M&E. So it’s vocal but there’s no discernible language in it.

There is moaning and groaning in agony and pain with no discernible language in it. There’s a whole collection of villagers suffering with no discernible English in it. There are groups of men hanging out and grumbling with no discernible English in it.

That’s always weird to ask 50 people to be a group of soldiers hanging out but, by the way, you can’t use any recognizable words. You need to give some extra explanation of what’s going on but once they understand why, everyone seems able to do it.

 

What were some things you learned about the experience of creating this library that may influence your approach to creating future libraries?

CA: Record more! Always record more.

We went into it was a really huge list of what we wanted and, the thing was, we got everything we wanted. I could’ve had a longer list with crazier stuff and we probably would’ve gotten that too.

It’s hard to imagine what you could need. Like, I’m working on a movie and so we’re always thinking about it from that movie’s perspective. It’s hard to see the movie you might be on five years from now. That’s hard to try and figure out but we’re trying to rummage through that.

It’s always a struggle to find the quiet things that we need…

Also, it’s easy to do huge and over-the-top. Doing over-the-top is a no-brainer. Giant explosions are easy. It’s the super quiet, tiny, tiny details that are always hard to get. Like, having 50 people in a room just breathing — just this presence of people. Stuff like that is always hard to get. It’s hard for people to do it because they just don’t get it. They want to be coughing or clearing their throats. But, really, I just need the sense of people in a room.

It’s always a struggle to find the quiet things that we need. Like, there are 50 million libraries of giant wind sounds. They all sound like a hurricane. Last year, I made a library for A Sound Effect that’s full of little, tiny, soft, gentle winds. I searched through all of my custom recordings looking for the gentlest winds that I could find. It’s called “Gentle Winds” and it’s all about that empty house sound when the husband and wife are arguing and there’s quiet and you can hear just a little, tiny bit of wind blowing through a window that’s open a crack. Just enough to let you know that there’s nothing going on here.

…Where are the big crowd libraries for the quiet moments?

If you can hear super quiet sounds than you know it’s really quiet. It’s like that. Where are the big crowd libraries for the quiet moments? For restaurants where people aren’t talking that much? The office space where people aren’t talking that much? A library Reading Room? Just this quiet, human presence. But that’s really hard to do because getting 50 people together is a huge pain in the backside and that was before COVID-19. You can’t do it now. I think those days are over for awhile.

  • Car Sound Effects Golden State Mustang Play Track 130 sounds included, 28 mins total $44.71

    This sound library is a collection of various actions with game audio in mind from a Ford Mustang 2021 Ecoboost convertible, recorded in parts of rural California in November 2024.

    The Mustang features a 2.3L Inline-4 (I4) turbocharged engine, which was quite the character captured with a lot of emphasis in the multichannel recording session.

    The library contains captures of idling, all the way up to 5000 RPM and beyond. Both single rev cycles as well as laying on the pedal for a consistent, sustained loop was a key part of our capture log. We even tried some sporadic flares of the engine in the style of Fast and the Furious, so your scene/game can be complete with that classic aggressive turbo-charged muscle sound to signal to the competition that you mean business.

    For the rest of the session, we captured some burnouts, some close-miked details of the tire on dirt roads, the classic passbys at various speeds, as well as the typical foley and actions associated with vehicles: doors, windshield wipers, buttons, etc. The microphones used: Clippy EM272M and Primo EM258 capsules from Micbooster for the car interior, a pair of Tascam TM-78 condenser mics in the engine bay, a pair of ND468 dynamic mics on the exhaust, and the Rode NTG5 shotgun mic.

    The content is offered in 96 kHz 24 bit for the engine recordings and 192 kHz 24 bit for the actions performed inside the vehicle. Polywavs are naturally provided for the multichannel mic arrays. This library is fully UCS compatible and Soundminer-friendly with richly embedded metadata. It contains 25 WAV files in total with a runtime of close to 28 mins of audio.
