Getting from point A to point B is one of the fundamental human activities, and the quest to do so has been rendered in myriad works of art through history. Video games have arguably incorporated themes of vehicular transportation since the iconic game Spacewar! in 1962, and the proliferation of driving, flying and freight management mechanisms in video games today shows no sign of abatement. However, themes of transportation are applicable to more than just the piloting of planes, trains, or automobiles; the virtual, political, environmental, and metaphysical aspects of transportation can be seen close to the core of many discourses, narratives, and debates in today’s world.
The LSA invites paper proposals that address any of the possible meanings of the word “transportation” in relation to video game music, including (but not limited to):
– Vehicular transport, e.g. planes, trains, and/or automobiles
– Migration, colonialism, and/or displacement of people groups
– Metaphorical and/or emotional action that might be said to “move” us
– Mechanisms of metaphysical transformation, e.g. entering the afterlife
Moving through or between gameworlds and storyworlds
Intersections of gameworlds and real-world transportation
Subject to available time within the symposium programme, we also welcome proposals on any other research topic related to video game music, and proposals from undergraduate students for full-length or half-length papers.
